i'm feeling so so normal about this. very normal. completely normal.
kind of taken with the idea of aeducan siblings who manage to maintain a sibling relationship after the whole attempted murder thing, if only because their upbringing was so unspeakably cutthroat that "i didn't personally kill you with my hands" is the best show of fraternal love they can manage.
the orzammar upper caste is vicious anyway, but this family in particular has a multi-generational history of fratricide. i think a lot of people forget this, but when bhelen warns you that trian is plotting your death, he's being completely truthful - the mercenaries in the thaig who try to kill you only got in because trian gave them his signet ring and instructed them to murder you. your older brother tries to have you assassinated before deciding to finish the job himself; bhelen's method, framing you for crimes and getting you thrown into the deep roads, is a comparatively hands-off approach to removing you as a political threat.
and it's unlikely that the aeducan has a positive history with any member of their family except bhelen. endrin is, at best, an oblivious moron who doesn't realize his eldest child is murder-feuding with the younger two, and if you want to be uncharitable, it's easy to read his behavior as a passive attempt to pit his children against one another so the strongest one eventually emerges as his heir (is this what happened with him and his own brother? family tradition?). trian sees his siblings as threats rather than sources of love or support, and your relationship with him is canonically adversarial. bhelen is the only one no one has ever assumed would take the throne, and based on the dialogue, he spent most of his childhood following you around, doing whatever you told him to do, and otherwise looking up to you in the way baby brothers will when they like you and think you're cool. i don't really get the sense that his plot against you was personal the way it was against trian, who loved and was loved by neither of you.
bhelen's not an unsentimental, inhumanly heartless guy, either - his moral code is bizarre, but he's still a person with feelings. he loves and marries rica even though that sacrifices his capacity to make a politically advantageous marriage. he seems to have genuine political principles and a feeling of responsibility towards the disadvantaged of orzammar. if you back his play even though he nearly got you killed, he makes you a paragon. i think this might be an attempted show of fraternal love from someone whose concept of healthy sibling relationships is abjectly fucked

I know that The Descent DLC was designed to be post game, aka after Solas left but holy fucking shit now there’s a really fucked up hilariously dark in game reason why Solas does not utter a god damn WORD of banter or commentary during that entire DLC.
noticing how many of solas’ banters are him quietly probing for political common ground with the other companions. like he’s the second-best friend that blackwall has in the inner circle because solas, with his revolutionary sympathies, has recognized this guy as someone who’s been similarly radicalized by his experiences as a foot soldier. a lot of his sera banters are attempts to give unsolicited advice, but my favorite is the one where he tries to help her build an effective guerrilla force because he assumes that she’s pushing for regime change/attempting to foment a peasant revolt (she never says or even implies this, but solas assumes it must be the case because that’s what he’d be doing in her position). he questions varric on kal-sharok and dwarven reform movements. he’s disappointed to hear that they’re less robust than he assumed and that varric remains uninterested in the political landscape underground.
i don’t think he’s actively recruiting - the character who agrees with him most is human, and therefore doomed if solas is successful in his attempt to tear down the veil and liberate the elven underclass - but it’s interesting how this is his primary mode of interpersonal interaction even when it’s not necessary or useful for him to start these arguments. he cannot turn it off even when it risks blowing his cover. love that for him
That hand needs some work– maybe I’ll get there someday
I re-drew the portrait for no reason– enjoy 🥰
on a second DA:I playthrough i’m noticing so much more foreshadowing in companion/advisor dialogue of how cadash/adaar/lavellan/tracelyan as a person HAS to be obliterated by the inquisition as a political, religious, and narrative force and the title of inquisitor.
mother giselle tells you from the beginning it doesn’t matter what you believe about being/not being the herald; you are an icon to the common people and the chantry.
josephine tells you after the truth about “andraste”/justinia is revealed in the fade—it doesn’t matter what you saw or felt, only what is remembered collectively.
dorian tells you if you ask to go with him to tevinter—you can never undo being the inquisitor, and would take away his agency just by being there.
varric tells you in haven that you’re a tragic hero, and asks at the wicked grace game if there is still a “you” separate from the inquisitor.
solas tells you in skyhold, if you tell him you intend to disband the inquisition, that the power you’ve amassed can’t be destroyed, and will only pass to less worthy hands if you relinquish it.
and all of that is just off the top of my head and comes up before ameridan’s name is ever mentioned.
and it’s all been said before but like! fuck! truth is the game was rigged from the start! you’ve been COOKED, inquisitor! YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME! it’s so fucking good
ADDITION! lavellan is always talked about as THE origin that is most transformed & destroyed by being made “herald”/inquisitor, but personally i love love love how it unfolds with cadash.
there’s an act 1 conversation where josie asks about the rumor that cadash was (is) carta, in which you can choose from varying levels of truthfulness & violent criminality. at the end of her little interview, josie uncomfortably says that she’ll find a way to spin this to the human aristocracy & clergy. cadash’s entire life up to this point is now an awkward, explosive secret that someone else is responsible for defusing.
their status as a casteless criminal also gives a special weight to conversations with sera where she says the inquisitor is “up there,” in danger of getting “too big to like.” but cadash is a citizen of nowhere. they’ve always been a powerless, scrounging exile on a low-hanging branch of an organized crime family. so if they are not that, if they now have gold and influence and manpower to flash around, if orzammar can be bullied into recognizing a surfacer herald, if they have a castle staffed with little people who fear & obey them, if they’re not little people anymore… then they aren’t cadash. right?
anders with a black mantle. :(
