Hello. Thank you for having interests in this web page. We are students from SFC(Keio University, faculty of Policy Management) and are working for a project. Bullying against foreign kids, terrorism, far-right political party etc... Because of the existence of stereotypes and prejudice, misunderstanding is caused and we cannot say these issues are heading for the better. We think two of the reasons that are preventing us from solving the issue are how histories are taught and how freedom of the press is restricted. We know that it is impossible to change the world all of a sudden. However, it is possible to spread the awareness of the issues and give an opportunity to realize them. We are still figuring out what we can do, but we are thinking of establishing a "neutral" media that compares medias around the world. 〈about "GAPMOE"〉 Our policy "GAPMOE" stands for Globalization Among Peoples' Minds On Earth. Furthermore, it has the meaning of "ギャップ萌え(GAPMOE)=being fascinated about something when it was different from what you had expected". "ギャップ萌え(GAPMOE)" does not happen with only a first impression. In order to notice the gap between what you thought something was and what it really is, we need to look at things from different perspectives. We feel that the globalization among peoples' minds on earth (GAPMOE) has the power to eliminate negative aspects of the gap such as bias and fixes ideas and turn them into something positive like the "ギャップ萌え(GAPMOE)". I have always been fascinated by these ‘world of 100 people’ things, I remember spending hours thinking through the ones on a poster at church when I was 9 or so. It really, really makes some really important stuff so blindingly clear, in numbers we can understand. And it should, I hope it does, inspire us to act.

The reason these work so well is because the human brain is actually incapable of comprehending the actual amount in people in the world. Our mind unassisted can only understand numbers up to a certain amount. Even 83% of 7 billion is difficult to grasp because we know that’s a Fuck ton, but on the flip side 17% of 7 billion is a Shit load. So our brain realy can’t comprehend the gravity of what exactly is the difference one fuck ton and one shit load. But when you take away the percent, remove this gigantic 7 billion number, and bring it down to 100, all of a sudden out brains go “oh! I know what 100 is! I can understand this!” And things are a lot clearer.

On the first day, we flew to Birmingham. Although I was exhausted, I was pretty excited about the trip, as I had never explored the country side of England. When we got to Stratford-upon-Avon, we did not have much time before the workshop so we quickly had lunch and got ready. 

The workshop was very interesting, because I could see The Jew of Malta in a different perspective and gain further understanding and knowledge of the play. Especially, by acting out and actually reading the play out loud, I was able to see the effects Marlowe had created. Adding to that, by trying different activities, I could also learn new things about acting which will help in drama class. By the end of the workshop, I definitely felt like I grew as a reader and  an actress and got really excited for the play we were going to see in the evening.

Before the play, we had time to explore the little town of Shakespeare’s birth place. Since we were unable to rely on our phones, we needed to try our best and use our orientation skills. Unfortunately, the weather was not looking very good. However, I did not really mind it, because it was the typical weather and it somehow felt very British. The architecture was unique, where buildings had wooden framework exposed. With this particular type of architecture, the town looked unified and created a nice scenery. We walked around the town and able to see Shakespeare’s grave, the Harvard House, Hall’s Croft, Shakespeare’s house and pretty much all the monuments there were. 

Unlike Paris, the streets were quiet and I could enjoy the birds chirping. Similarly, people were really nice and I fell in love with the town instantly. Also, the famous red telephone booths were everywhere, and I ate fish and chips for dinner so I really enjoyed the British culture. The time really flew by and it was the time for the play. 

The theater was beautiful consisting elements from both the ancient time and the modern time. As soon as I stepped into the audience, I was surrounded by this theatrical atmosphere I could see the overview of the stage and hear the music playing. Then, from the beginning to the end the play caught my eyes and I paid full attention to it, even though I knew the story pretty well. It was because of their new way of approaching the play; with dances, music, the use of water, comical... But above all, the characters were amazing,carefully expressing their thoughts and minds.

Over all, I had a pretty amazing first day, to say the least!

Spring Fling

Although we had some minor problems, we were able to have a successful show to a certain extent.

We worked really productively last three weeks and we actually surprised ourselves with our capability. It is a shame though, because if we have had spent the same amount of effort from the beginning, we could have thrown a better play. By getting involved in this production, I learned not only about theater but also gained teamwork skills.

I feel like everything became easier and smooth when we decided what exactly we were putting in the play; thinking part was difficult, and once we had our basis set up, we could advance rather easily. Also, with a lot of pressure on our shoulders that we needed to work it out somehow, we really bonded together as a team, helped each other out and moved forward as a team. At the same time, we had people who failed to show their supports and commitments and it was really frustrating and disappointing. I realized that things cannot always work on the way we want but we have to keep going sometimes.

For personal contribution, I was in charge of projection. With help from Nana, I made a Prezi to project in order to create setting and atmosphere of the play. At first, I was rushing and not really thinking fully and put some random image, but with the directer and Mr. Bonnici's comments, I modified them to fit the setting better. It is always good to have someone see our work from objective view in order to realize the smallest things.

Adding to that, I had the role of a policewoman in the play. It was first time for me to actually act on a stage and I was really nervous and ended up freezing on the stage. As I am a dancer, I am usually comfortable on the stage so it was surprising for me to find myself in that position where I just blanked out. I hope it was not that obvious and was able to cover up as it was during interrogation thus some silence is not too bizarre.

After all, I am really glad that I participated in the play itself and in making of it, because I was able to have experiences I would otherwise never have.

Become Eco Friendly

I am happy that the Green Day project was successful after all, despite the lack of teamwork and how we had to prepare in the very last minutes. 

I did not only became more aware of the earth and the problems it is facing, but through this project, I also gained new skills such as using Prezi and looking after small children.

I was really surprised and happy at how educated and well aware the children were about the global warming. 

 It was really fun working with these Kindergarten students. They all listened to our instructions and participated well. Like how the teachers have warned us about working with the little children, it was a tiny bit difficult to deal with them at times, but we handled well generally and I loved working with them. 

Finally, I hope that everyone who has participated in the project became more aware of the global issue, to be more eco-friendly and to share what they have learnt!

Unity March. I participated in the Unity March to show solidarity to what has happened in Paris. Although I could not make it to the end, it was still as meaningful and very emotional experience.

The incidents that took place in Paris last week were absolutely terrifying and unacceptable but I learned many things from them. I did not only realize how peaceful my home, Japan is, but I also realized how lucky I am to live in a country where there are freedoms. I feel as even the terrorists were victims to a certain extent. There were reasons behind their actions and I am so sad that they felt the need to take such actions. And in hopes to something like that would never happen, I walked through the city. There were thousands of people, in fact, estimated of 1.5 million people on the street. French, Catholics, Jewish, British, Spanish,,, even Arabs and Muslim people were present to show their solidarity. Everyone was united to fight and the scene was just so beautiful.

AIDS is one of the world issues that is going around for years. Yet, people tend to be ignorant about this and sadly, there are discrimination and prejudice against this disease. I cannot wait for one day when we can get it to zero.

I had an individual meeting with Mrs. Buxton. It was a great session and it really made me think of who I am and what I want to do in the future, which is what CAS is all about. As we discussed about my family a little bit, it was interesting to hear an objective view on my family and it made me see and think from a different perspective. I really do enjoy CAS, as I believe I am a creative, active and giving human being. However, how I enjoy all the activities is a bit of problematic at the same time, as I cannot narrow down on my future. I am interested in everything from becoming an astronaut, to an architect, to a journalist, to a photographer, to a directer, to a blogger to doing a humanitarian trip around the world, to so on and forth. I really cannot decide. So I will try various activities now and try to find myself and to see what I like the most and carry on doing as my career. I am excited to go on my journey!

Global Importance Club

04 December 2014 (During CAS Class #22)

We finished sharing our backgrounds and about what we like and dislike about our home countries in our previous lessons. It was very interesting to hear about different culture and I gained further understanding of my classmates. At the same time, I learned more about my country, Japan by hearing, comparing and contrasting it with other countries and it was compelling. 

Since last Monday was World AIDS Day, and AIDS is one of the world issue, we spent half of class discussing about it. Although we think we know something, we really do not and I once again realized how important it is to raise awareness and educate people. 

Then, we used our other half of the class to take our shared stories one step further. We discussed what we can do for our countries' issues. For example, we can sing some songs (ex: Hana-wa-Saku; Japanese encouraging song for the earthquake), do fund run or do organize food/clothes drive. We realized that importance dates such as the outbreak of Syrian Civil War and Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami are in March, so we came up with an idea of having World Issues Week or Month in March. 

I really enjoy these classes, because I really do feel like a serious and important member of the world, who considers about world issue and contribute to make it better. I really am pursing "think globally, act locally" motto. At the very same time, I feel useless as I am powerless as a student without money to do anything. Therefore, I would like to come up with ideas and ways to still make a difference, even if it were small, somehow.

World AIDS Day tomorrow!

This week the recycling club began placing boxes in many of the class rooms. Around 25 boxes have been placed . The presentations on their purpose will be done by the members beginning from tomorrow. Also at the same time the remaining boxes are being finished and will be placed in the class...

Chess Club

My classmates will teach me how to play chess. By experiencing a new activity, perhaps a challenge, I will explore my abilities and even myself. Adding to that, I believe that learning how to play chess is beneficial because it will help to built concentration, critical thinking, strategy, problem solving and more skills used in life. Also, I do know how to play Shogi, which is a Japanese board game similar to chess, so I will discover similarities and differences in two board games and teach Shogi to my classmates.

Recycling Club

We have been painting the boxes. We have successfully finished about 3/4 of them and distributed them to class. Our next step is to encourage students from all grades to recycle. Our school is becoming greener and greener every week! Recycling club is one of the projects everyone is supporting and showing contribution and I hope this continues through out the year!

Blanket Knitting

Another project we started working on is Blanket Knitting. As we enter the winter season and feel the harsh weather ourselves, we would like to take a moment and appreciate our wealth and fortune for letting us have houses, enough food and clothes to keep us warm. Then, we would like to share the love to those without. In order to do this, we are going to knit blankets and send them to local charity organization.

World Aids Day

I am really excited as we have finally started working on our projects. Our first projects will be raising awareness for AIDS. World AIDS Day is 1st of December and we would like to organize assembly and hand out red ribbons in order to raise awareness. I believe that it is important to raise awareness for AIDS because many people suffer from this disease and from prejudices caused by being infected by it. Our school does not offer a health class and thus young students are uneducated about this disease which I find problematic. Adding to that, prejudice against HIV patients are mainly caused by lack of understanding and ignorance. Therefore, I believe that we can make a change by spreading the awareness.  #PutARibbonOnIt
