“A few.” Beccaadmitted. Granted, it’s never been the ghosts she’s wanted to see. Alwaysghosts that meant little of no consequence to her, ghosts that just needed tobe seen by someone. Even if it was a terrified little girl who shut her eyesand mumbled them away in the thick ofthe jungle. She shakes the thought away, giving another crooked smile and chuckling,“It is. So you weren’t raised by barbarians then.”
She nodded slowly, listening as Cash explains his relationship even as small as it is with the First.Matthew was a towering presence. Even to someone like Becca, who’d only knownhim for the past few months. She’d wanted to get to know him, learn things fromhim. She’d just been too slow, and Matthew had always been busy – until he wasn’t.“Right.” Becca said softly. “It just kind of goes to show the immortality of theisland isn’t exactly all encompassing.” That death, even here, didn’t playfavorites.
Becca perked up alittle when Cash mentioned he could build things. Like it was an actual skillhe possessed rather than her own haphazard throw togethers. “Really? I couldactually use some help with that. Like a chair or a bed frame…do you know whata bed frame is?” Becca barely did herself, “Or any way to sleep off the ground, really. I’d trade you whatever you needed, of course.”

Cash catches a sign of hurt in her eyes, the kind of wounds that is far too old and faded it became a part of their skin. Many on this island carries those marks, and he knows that it is something he cannot fix. He nods solemnly and says, “I think I’ve only seen one in that mist, and I’m not sure if it was the same kind of ghost.” He purses his lips as he thinks about Ava. Even though they told him it was hallu... illusion, Cash felt like she was actually there. Maybe that is a form of ghosts too? “No, uh, I was raised by a... fisherman. And people on the island.” He laughs.
It takes him a moment to process what Rebecca says, some of the words she uses are tricky. “Right? I sometimes forget, or I guess, try not to think about it. Sometimes people... leave, and there’s nothing we can do about it.” He says with a weak chuckle, thinking it’s silly how he forgets those things. “But, life goes on, with or without the ones we lost. I just wish they are in a better place now.” He muses, mostly thinking out loud. He gives her an awkward smile a moment later, “sorry, I’m rambling.”
Talking about building and fixing things is much easier for him. Cash laughs at her question. “I know what a bedframe is, yes. I can build them too. Nothing fancy, just so you can sleep off the ground. We don’t have a mattress, though, so if you have any clothes you don’t wear... anything soft, we can use that as the bed.” It’s relatively a simple task. He just needs time to gather the material and carve the frame. “Oh, you don’t have to pay me back or anything. I’m always happy to help. What’s the phrase, pay it forward?” He then actually gives it some thought, wondering if he needs anything... “Actually, since you’re from the Jungle, I’d like to learn more about it? I’ve been there like... less than ten times my entire life here. So if you could teach me how to... travel through the Jungle, that’d be great.”
