an open letter to ABC and the cast and crew of Castle

For the last three years, I have been a devoted and passionate advocate for the cast, crew, and fans that collectively form the community of Castle. I have the deepest respect for all who have worked tirelessly to bring their collective creative spirit to us every week, and have championed the show’s twists and turns gladly through it’s highs and lows. I have said goodbye to some beloved characters and offered bright, hopeful welcome to others as they came.

All of that for one simple reason: I believe whole heartedly in the power of a story to bring people together, and bring them hope, joy, and comfort. I have watched this community do just that - open it’s arms and its heart to give to those in need, to each other, and to me. Strangers reaching out to one another across seemingly impossible barriers of distance, language, and culture because we shared a simple bond of love for the story brought to life on our television screens.

It has been nearly three years to the day since I was a little known voice within this community, when I wrote these words: Castle is different. Castle’s pairing isn’t an afterthought. It isn’t a device to draw female viewers into a show. It isn’t one of a series of relationships in an ensemble show. It’s the heart of the story.

I have no great wish to see this story end. But if you take Kate Beckett away from the story of Castle, it loses something far more than just a storyline, or a character. It loses its very heart. The fans of this show don’t want to wish it farewell, don’t want to see the cast and crew we have come to love scattered and no longer making magic together. We too would love for the story to continue for years to come. But not without its heart and its hope.

You see, we have been here for the story all along. We have believed whole heartedly that if you want the happy ending, you can’t give up. We have believed in Always. Our wish, my wish, is very simple: to know that whenever the last scene of Castle ends, Castle and Beckett’s journey will continue on in our hearts, towards that promise of a happy ending, of Always.

For as long as that is true, I am here to be your champion. But without heart and hope, I could only champion the memory of a time when these existed, and the community it created. Because without those things, it would no longer be the story that brought me here, that brought us all together.

At this moment, the story of Castle stands as a beautiful legacy of all of your hard work over the last eight seasons. I implore you as you move ahead in whatever comes next to cherish that legacy enough to protect it. To care enough for the community that you have helped to build to allow the story of Castle and Beckett to live on.
