Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against a Group of Teens
The family of a man who was run down and killed in a motel parking lot in Jackson, Mississippi, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a group of teenagers, who they claim is responsible for the man's death. The suit also includes charges of battery and negligence.
The lawsuit, filed in Hinds County Circuit Court in Jackson, portrays the death of James Craig Anderson, who is African American, as a hate crime. The suit claims that the death of Anderson was a result of a group of drunken teenagers who were intent on finding African-Americans to harass. The police say that Anderson was beaten and robbed in a motel parking lot. Then, one of the teenagers backed up their truck, accelerated forward, and ran the man over, instantaneously killing him. Deryl Dedmon, the young man believed to be driving the pickup, is facing capital murder charges, which means that a murder must be committed in connection with another felony.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against VA Doctors by Iraq War Veteran
A woman in Utah has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs over the death of her husband, claiming that he died from an overdose of medications prescribed by the VA's doctors.
The man, who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a brain injury he sustained while serving in Iraq, was taking a myriad of prescription medication. The lawsuit claims his doctors should have monitored his prescriptions more closely and that they failed in their duties as medical caretakers to "provide reasonable, necessary, appropriate and timely medical care and treatment."

Class-Action Lawsuit Against Groupon to Proceed in Court
A federal judge in northern California has approved parts of a class-action lawsuit against Groupon, the popular social buying website that was recently valued for over $20 billion, by a tour company that accuses the company of bait-and-switch advertising.
The lawsuit alleges that Groupon buys tour-related keywords on Google's AdWords service, but often does not actually offer tour coupons when customers arrive at the site, the lawsuit alleges. Groupon's tactic drives up the cost of keywords for various tour companys in the industry, as well as decreasing the prominence of its ads in Google searches, the lawsuit states.
Wrongful Death Suit Against Police Officer Reinstated
A federal appeals court has reinstated a wrongful death lawsuit against a Madera, Calif., police officer who shot a man in the abdomen with a pistol, believing it to be a Taser weapon. The man was handcuffed in the back seat of the officer's patrol car when the incident occurred. The appeals court claimed the officer had acknowledged the man posed no danger to anyone but himself, and that a jury might even question the use of a Taser weapon in the situation, especially a pistol.

Former Football Players File Lawsuit Against the NFL
Former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon and six other former players have filed a lawsuit against the National Football League over concussions suffered during various games they have played. The suit alleges the league "instructed players to hit with their heads, failed to properly treat them for concussions and concealed links between football and severe brain injuries for decades."
The class-action lawsuit claims that NFL officials had knowledge about the negative affects of concussions on players for decades, but only revealed that information last year. They are seeking undisclosed compensation.

Suicide of Russell Armstrong: Wrongful Death?
Thousands of people in the US commit suicide each year. Unfortunately, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Russell Armstrong has committed this act. Is anyone legally liable or responsible when someone commits suicide?
Sometimes no one is. After all, it's an individual's choice to take her own life. However, there may be times when someone other than the victim may be liable for a suicide, such as a parent, spouse, school official, or medical professional.
Lawsuits involving suicide and medical malpractice are filed by someone who survives the person who committed suicide, such as a parent or spouse, or sometimes the suicide victim's estate, especially if he was an adult. These suits are typically called wrongful death lawsuits.
A medical or mental health care professional may face liability for a suicide in cases involving:
Prescribing medications, or an improper dosage of medications, that tend to increase the risk of suicide
In the case of minors or other dependent children, failing to inform parents or guardians of suicide risks identified by the professional
Failing or refusing to take appropriate measures to prevent suicide, up to and including involuntary commitment to a mental health facility
Misdiagnosing or failing to properly identify the risk of suicide
Losing a loved one is extremely traumatic, perhaps even more so when it's a suicide. Please remember that filing a lawsuit against someone can't bring a loved one back. However, if you suspect someone is responsible for the death, especially a medical professional, a lawsuit may help to make sure it doesn't happen again. Dog Bites: What is the Law?
A Washington jury has awarded $2.2 million to a local woman who was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull several years ago. The dog entered the woman's house and began attacking her two Jack Russell terriers, and she sustained injuries when trying to fighting the animal off.
In an unexpected twist, the jury assigned 42% of the blame to Pierce County because "animal control officials took no action even after getting more than a dozen complaints" about the dog from the neighborhood. The injured woman, Sue Gorman, was assigned 1 percent of the blame. She suffered bites to the face and arms while trying to pull the pit bull off her two Jack Russell terriers.

Two Prominent East Coast Law Schools Sued by Own Students
Two lawsuits seeking class action status were filed today against Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan and New York Law School. The plaintiffs, who are all graduates of the accused law schools, seek $250 million from Cooley and $200 million from NYLS, as well as other damages and reformed employment statistic reporting practices. The lawsuits claim that the law schools have repeatedly distorted their post-graduate employment information by advertising the percentage of those who secure any job within nine months of graduation, even ones that don’t have anything to do with the law industry. They also claim that the reported amount for graduates’ average salaries is inflated since it is derived from a narrow, self-selected pool of people who actually provide that information to the school.

Hawaii School for Deaf and Blind Accused of Sexual Assault
The Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind has been served with a class-action lawsuit. The suit alleges that school officials were aware that in 2007, over 35 young students were being harassed, beaten and raped by other students and did nothing about it. According to the suit, a group of students calling themselves "the Ringleaders" sexually abused as many as 35 students in the past four years. The suit also states that various group members have admitted to school counselors and officials that they assaulted students, but nothing was done to keep the children safe.
“At one point, a young girl on a school bus in the presence of other students was coerced into giving oral sex to a member of the Ringleaders who filmed the act on his cell phone” and laer showd the video to others, according to the suit. Police last week said they are investigating the allegations.
