Character development is a thing

I'm going to put most of it behind a cut. Keep in mind I may not be a scholar here - I don't have an MFA or even a degree in Fine Arts or English Lit. I'm a very passionate hobbyist who happened to get a book published by a publisher in hardcover so that is the extent of my experience when it comes to literature.

However, as a writer, I did have to learn the basics of the craft to write something that was marketable (a key point here, but I digress) to be considered by a publisher.

This isn't about any particular character, but I will probably draw on one or two to illuminate why FFXIV did a fantastic job in places to show incredible leaps of character development.

Yep, this post is about Gaius (again), as well as a few others.

I love nothing more than a character who started out "bad" or possibly evil by the point of view the narration gives and then shows potential early on.

However, let's go over some facts.

Before 2.0, Gaius was supposed to be (very strongly intended) to be one of the villains of the game. However, even in 1.0 the writer's chose to show something significantly more complex than that.

Well after the events of Endwalker, Cassandra asked her father if he would like to join her and the rest of the family on the island. As his role in Werlyt was winding down and, although his age and the years had made his role in Werlyt further into the past, he was still a painful reminder to some and so he accepted a graceful retirement and took her up on the offer.

As Gaius grew older, the warmth was appreciated as it was gentle on his aging joints and body... especially as arthritis caught up to his knees.
