This is game I made while researching the beef industry. Finding out exactly how cattle goes from birth to burger isn’t very clearly represented anywhere. To see the first 6 months of their life, you have to trust what the ranchers giving tours and making videos on YouTube tell you. The investigative journalists don’t look into that aspect nearly as much as the next step of the process, the feedlots. The feedlots have gotten a lot better in the past 30 years in terms of the treatment and quality of life for the animals. However, it took a living saint, Temple Grandin, to push the industry in that direction. It’s really astonishing to see how businessmen, who clearly haven’t worked on the ranch since probably childhood, direct mexican workers to inject hormones and antibiotics into the cattle, and the owner’s telling you that these supplements are great for ‘cost effective’ they are.
So this game is my attempt to put you in the shoes of that owner. To make you think and feel what he does. You don’t worry about the cattle’s natural or healthy state, you worry about how fast you can get them out the door and how much they are worth at market. That doesn’t stop you from seeing it all as a bright, well engineered, and positive industry.
