I'm so happy we have Hawk back. Yay for character arcs!
He's so much fun to watch. He is so earnest and loyal and dedicated. Like yes, he's harsh, but um look who taught him. He is trying to overcorrect his "nerdiness."
He feels so passionately and he's so loyal. He wanted to stay friends with Miguel, he wanted to keep Mitch (Assface), and he regretted his decision to break Demetri's arm (honestly, yikes, tho). But his loyalties laid with Kreese during S3, especially after Johnny started withdrawing over the course of S2. Johnny really only kept ties with Miguel, and Hawk blames him and his "mercy" for Miguel's injuries. (I love Johnny's relationship with Miguel, but when Miguel and Hawk both felt betrayed because Robby was his son, who was the only person that Johnny opened up to? Took out for burgers and fries? Vowed to support him and never fail him? Yeah, it wasn't Hawk. And it's okay that Johnny doesn't have the same relationship with him. He doesn't need to. But that's how Kreese was able to slip in.)
They did such a good job of showing how good Kreese is at mentally and emotionally manipulating him. A perfect way for us to see into Kreese's lunacy, Hawk's slow disillusionment, and other plot-relevant stuff. And no, Kreese is not to blame for all of Hawk's decisions. He was already becoming a bully in S2. But he always has this performative layer. He's emulating the people that had power over him in the past, because he can't conceive of any other way to have power. And whenever someone attacks him or his, he attacks back. His loyalty is a flaw, in this way, because he takes immediate and vengeful action, warranted or not. S2 was an excellent argument against the Us vs Them mentality. But I digress.
I'm really glad that Kreese didn't cast him out. It was more powerful for him to make the choice from his position as #1 in Cobra Kai than to have been cast out and forced to change because of his exile.
I was worried they were headed for that, with the addition of Kyler and then Robby. We all know Kreese doesn't really care about him. But I'm glad he got to choose to get out of dodge, instead of be cast out.
I definitely felt for him when Kyler, his former bully, was added to the Cobra Kai team (and replacing his friend Mitch ☹️). But I especially felt for him when Kreese tried to recruit Robby. Hawk, again, is very loyal. And even though, technically, Miguel is on the outs with Cobra Kai, what with staying with Johnny and helping him with Eagle Fang whatever (really, Johnny?) ... Even though? He still hates Robby for what he did to Miguel. "He's the enemy." And he's willing to play nice for the sake of "enemy of my enemy," but between Kyler and Robby, Hawk's feeling all his insecurities.
That whole scene where they steal a cobra? I've seen takes where it's given as much thought as "Hawk feels like his place as alpha is being threatened." But when I was watching this scene, I was brutally reminded that even though I feel for Robby, he was still a Cool Kid™. The kind of long-haired, school-skipping delinquent that Hawk's been trying to emulate for the past three seasons. Robby feels perfectly comfortable mouthing off to Hawk with his snappy comebacks and his flippant attitude. Hawk always feels like he's trying to prove himself. Over and over.
Story of his life.
An idea I like to think about is Johnny and Hawks bonding moments. They’ve obviously had conversations just the two of them, probably often similar to the ones we see with Johnny and Miguel. Hawk knew about the power moves Johnny’s talked about, they probably talked about moon when hawk first started going out with her, and hawk was the only person Johnny walked up to and straight talked to him when he was trying to convince the old cobras to join his new dojo. I want more hawkxjohnny moments.
miguel: do you think i can fit fifteen marshmallows in my mouth?
demetri: you are a hazard to society.
hawk: and a coward. do twenty.
I started binging Cobra Kai, and I'm kinda digging this 50 year old HS bully having a midlife crisis and adoptin 20+ nerd kids despite the fact he was never able to be there for his own kid.
