○ wednesday, october 30th, 1974 in santa clara, cuba: a couple welcomed their second son into a bed of uncertainty. castillo aargón only spent a few months in his birthplace before his family escaped the castro regime and settled in the adirondacks of new york.
○ unfortunately, like many immigrant families, castillo's family came to the states with hardly anything and had to work themselves up from zero. his father found work in agriculture while his mother began a business with her impeccable sewing skills. from a young age, all of the aargón children (two more had come five years after their move) were pressured to study hard as their parents wanted nothing more than them to never know the struggles of not knowing if they could afford to live.
○ though the struggles of poverty were always prominent in his childhood, cas has nothing but happy memories of those years. he could never thank his parents enough for shielding his and his sibling's young minds from the stresses they went through after their lights went off at night. it's something he's tried to keep in his own journey of fatherhood.
○ in the summer of '89, the aargóns moved to aurora bay, california when his father was offered an amazing opportunity to become the overseer of a prominent family's vineyard. it was more money than any of them had ever seen or could even dream about, and camilo knew he would have been a fool not to take it. cas took to the move pretty well, even if he had the usual confusion of pronouncing his name or sticking up for his mother when her english wasn't to someone's standards.
○ speaking of 'sticking up for': younger cas was a bit of a rougher character. he was scrappy, unserious, always willing to cause trouble, and ready with a slick pick-up line whenever a pretty girl crossed his path. teachers never minded his fooling around because he was an amazing student (going on to become valedictorian when he graduated) still, he was absolutely told off once or twice a month for being disruptive.
○ cas was voted 'biggest flirt' for his senior superlative.
○*part of a wanted connection/plot* when he was a sophomore in high school, cas fell for a pretty freshman. she was from old money, a challenge for the young boy. however, they were soon in a 'forbidden' puppy love by the end of the school year. her parents weren't too keen on their daughter dating a boy prone to getting into brawls and who snuck into underground clubs underage. it didn't matter he was set to graduate college early due to him taking undergraduate classes in high school. his rough edges were too much for the family. but that didn't stop them. it never does. when cas was (17-20), his girlfriend found out she was pregnant. cas did what many young boys do in that situation: freak the hell out. he was a selfish kid and was only thinking about himself and his wants, so he withdrew from both the relationship with his first love and the relationship with his child.
○ at seventeen, cas' brother cam was the subject of harassment in a hate crime. it was months of hell for the aargóns but their one bright light was the district attorney. he fought endlessly to help find justice for a boy that the justice system may have otherwise forgotten. in the end, cam's assailants were locked up for years and cas was left inspired for the rest of his life: he wanted to help the countless people who were just like cam and needed just that one person would speak up for them when faced with horrible crimes.
○ *part of a wanted connection/plot* in undergrad, cas had a very close male friend. very close. he was the reason cas realized he was, in fact, bi and didn't just think guys were objectively attractive. worrying that any future employers would find out, he bowed out of the platonic and romantic relationship. he wonders what happened to him all these years later.
○ when he met rosalyn during his first year of grad school, he knew she was the one who was going to make him settle down. he fell in a love he couldn't describe with words. she was perfect. they were engaged within a year of dating and she fell pregnant months after. they welcomed their first child five months after marriage and their daughter a year later: only mere weeks after he became a partner at his firm.
○ a few years into their marriage, cas worked on a case that resulted in a child losing their home. after fostering for about eleven months, cas and rosalyn welcomed lydia violet into their family: bringing them to a family of five (six when his oldest actually wanted to be in his life)
○ life was seemingly picture-perfect for the new sect of the aargóns for years. yes, cas' relationship with his first child had become non-existent but otherwise, he got everything he wanted.
○ a year ago, during a terrible thunderstorm, cas was at a firm party where a little bit of 'old cas' came out. he got very intoxicated and ended up needing a ride home. so, a very tired rosalyn picked his happy ass up (gave him a bit of a verbal lashing) and started driving back home. in a split second, she lost control of the car and spun out. the car slid for an eighth of a mile before slamming into a tree. he walked away with two shattered shinbones, a shattered pelvis, and major yet non-life threatening yet his wife, the wife he adored and loved more than he ever knew was possible, didn't survive.
○ ever since her casket closed, cas has thrown himself into his work. he barely speaks rosalyn's name, is no longer the good father to his two youngest, and has lost that cas spark. he's trying to find some light at the end of the tunnel, but he may have made too comfortable of a home in the dark corners of grief.
