Idk why but Benoit Blanc being gay felt like the most natural thing to me specifically because he gets attached so easily to goodhearted young women in a way that's simultaneously not creepy yet not paternal/familial.

One of what, in my opinion, is the funniest reaction to glass onion is people seeing hugh grant answer the door and thinking. Ah yes. Benoit Blanc is married to Hugh Grant. Not Hugh Grant's character, but Hugh Grant himself.
And then they are utterly awestruck when in the captions on Netflix he is referred to as "Phillip" and not real life person Hugh Grant
Thank the lord that Benoit Blanc is a detective with compassion and kindness and cares while also being a genius detective because the two don’t need to be exclusive
thinking about benoit blanc being like. a genuinely good and cool dude
in addition to being considerate of others' feelings?? comforting marta "because you are a good nurse" without just steamrolling over her during the revelatory scene about ransom???? his little gasp and horrified expression when he thinks helen has died???? him walking away and handing helen klear and basically telling her to blow the fucking thing up????????
love him love this movie love them
i’m rewatching glass onion and im now catching the amount of times helen’s accent slips into her natural one whenever she gets super passionate in her rants and it’s so subtle and holy crap throw all the oscars at janelle monae
the idea that andi and helen mimick cassandra, who was doomed to speak the truth and have noone believe her, and helen of troy, who brought with her the downfall of troy, even if she hadn’t meant to do that at first, is very very interesting to me
Glass Onion boldly asks the question: what if Elon Musk had friends
sorry but the fact that they got stephen sondheim and angela lansbury to pretend to play among us over zoom is sending me
DANIEL CRAIG as BENOIT BLANC Glass Onion (2022) dir. Rian Johnson
rian johnson has managed to evade all common ethical problems in his screenwriting and i want everyone to know that the knives out mysteries are a perfect representation of how to write about a certain community respectfully AND simultaneously not make a big deal of how good you are at being a diverse writer.
in knives out and glass onion, both main characters are women of color who have been wronged by the other main character(s)—in marta's case, she experiences racism from the thrombey's constantly; in andi's, she came up with a billion dollar idea which was stolen by a white man. when she took him to court for it, her entire friend group sided with this man; this directly affects helen after andi's death.
andi and marta's stories specifically represent real experiences for women of color in america, but the stories are told without being too ham-fisted or obvious about it. these aren't stories about racism and misogyny, they're stories involving racism and misogyny, which i feel is something you don't often see. they're not triyng to prove a point by telling these stories, they're just stories being told—it's a difference that's hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. it's got less of a looking-into-the-camera-for-emphasis vibe.
alongside this, benoit was never a white savior to neither marta nor helen. he helped helen when she came to him about andi and he stood behind marta when he saw the tox report, but he never took over the case and they were never treated like damsels in distress. in the end, helen and marta took control of their own revenge and benoit nudged everyone else to the side while they did it. benoit is not the hero of these stories, helen and marta are.
this is good fucking writing!!!! i need film bros to be insufferable about rian johnson NEOW
made this post for sapphic reasons
speaking as a lifelong sh fan here I am 100% serious when I say benoit blanc is not only the spiritual successor to sherlock holmes but is also the modern day sherlock holmes adaptation we need and deserve. he's definitely not meant to be a 1-1 adaptation of that character but he absolutely is the man canon holmes was and every subsequent interpretation of him should have been and he literally deserves to sit among the ranks of timeless iconic detectives. the first movie was so right when they called him the last of gentleman sleuths. he's THE charming and eccentric detective character we need for a new generation and I just hope and pray we can get more of him in this franchise. and he's literally gay
Please picture a character portrayed by Hugh Grant, in his late 30s, early 40s, with an armful of shopping bags, walking into his office and stopping short because there's a man on his hands and knees crawling around the rug with an honest-to-god magnifying glass.
"Er."
The man looks up at him through the fucking magnifying glass, making one of his startlingly blue eyes enormous, and the guy starts flapping his free hand, freaking out in what cannot be a real american southern accent.
"Please—sir—this is officially a crime scene. Well, not officially. I have no authority to make it official—but your shoes, please."
The man on the rug is not wearing his shoes.
This perplexed and slightly greying Hugh Grant figure stands there—"Pardon me, but who are you and what are you doing on my rug in my office?"
He could've just said "in my office" but that extra prepositional phrase about the rug was pressing. And it suddenly occurs to the very impatient man that this guy (philip) must think this is strange. He sighs.
"My name is Benoit Blanc, and I am a detective. And if you wander into the adjoining studio, you will be disappointed to find a dead body."
anyway that's how Ben Blanc meets his boyfriend
Benoit Blanc really is the most guy ever. He’s a world famous detective. He’s played by a British man but has a fake country accent. He dresses like a cartoon character and smokes cigars. He hates mystery games because he sucks at them. He plays video games with his friends in the bath over discord. He has a soft spot pathetic, righteous, panicky women. He makes up words on the fly. He’s gay. He hates rich people.
