hold you down and tear you open, live inside you vampire!cassandra &. priest!castor
i’ve got you now, i’ll show you alli’ll kick out the chair, let you dangle slow in the back of the bus all of us like the coats in cloak rooms
and if you rise again, take a form i know the river will boil, then overflow and the houses you’re haunting will tremble with temporal hoodoo
- we know where you sleep, the paper chase
Damp. The wet slide of leather shoes against stone and metal. Castor adjusts the collar of his cassock, opens the door to the thin underground cell. Little light shines here, but his eyes have long adjusted to the dark from the journey.
There is a creature waiting for him, in the unlit chamber, chained by its hands and feet, shackled to the wall by cold iron. And the entirety of the cell is padded with iron, sunk deep into the earth.
The creature is still. Doubtless it had heard his arrival not long ago- sound carried, in the underground. Pity there was nobody else to listen.
How long has it been again- a week, perhaps more?
He takes another step forwards, sets his lamp close to the door. He can see fine enough without it, though the creature has no need to know of that.
“Still alive?” He asks, conversationally. The smile that curves his lips is soft.
It remains motionless, still- if he didn’t know better, he really might think it dead. After all, such creatures have no heartbeat to tell of life.
A smile slants on his lips as he steps closer. His hands tangle in its hair, wrenches its head up by the hair until the beast is looking at him- and its eyes are open, gaze colder than ice- wild as a caged animal though it makes no other movement. There is nothing of intelligence in that gaze, nothing but animal hatred. It’s nothing more than a mindless beast, a creature shed of all human pretence.
( well, he supposes that is his fault as well. whoops. )
He smiles, a pleased hum on his lips. “Need to feed?”
He waits a beat for the reply that never comes, smile widening a fraction. “I guessed.”
( question: what is it that separates humanity from beasts?
intelligence is the first. autonomy is the second. and perhaps lastly, god.
there are steps to breaking a person. remove their control, take away their autonomy. deprive them of everything but a beast’s collar, and they will learn to forget language. )
( ‘look at you, a beast pretending to be human. that’s unacceptable, wouldn’t you agree?’ )
He kneels down beside the creature, hand settled on the back of its neck, almost tender. And the girl- for that is what its form takes, glares up at him. Her teeth pull into a snarl, the first movement she’s made- fangs glinting white in the darkness. A truly pointless effort. It makes a warm spot of pleasure flare in him, pride in his work.He supposes he has her to thank for that.
None of the others had gotten this far, much less kept their will.
Gently, he pulls back the collar of his cossack, watches her pupils dilate with faint curiousity.
“Well?” He murmurs, “Do you want to live, or do you want to die here.”
Perhaps, as they both know, he uses a rather loose term of the word die. And for the same reason as she will drink his blood, she will know better than to tear out his throat.
There is no-one else here, after all. There is no way to get free.
He waits, fingers sunk in the fabric of his robe. In the end, she bends. He has half a second of awareness to watch her mouth open the barest millimeter more- and then she’s lunged forwards with animalistic desperation, her teeth are in his neck and she’s struggling at the chains to have better reach at him. A breathless laugh escapes Castor’s lips, a wave of pleasure washes over him alongside the sting of the bite, and he’s leaning forwards, curling his fingers through the girl’s hair as he waits for her to drink her fill.
It’s almost intimate- this- the pain mixing with the pleasure, the manner the vampire drinks from him as if she has known nothing but hunger all her life, as if she is trying to devour his soul itself. Aren’t the both of them almost lovers, in the proximity of the moment, skin on skin, surely in this moment his heart is beating for her alone. There’s a haze over his vision, a flush taken to his cheeks- he’d laugh again, if he could. She owes a debt, she will never forget the taste of his blood.
( blood and debt, and perhaps they are one and the same. you are born with debt. debt to the womb that birthed you, debt to the earth on which you came to being- debt to the god who gave you life. blood given, and blood taken, and she owes.
but debt, and isn’t it a funny thing. he had been a debt child, though she would not know this. she is more alike to him than she would suppose. the church that took him as its own, given him its cross and raised ash to his lips as a newborn.
a debt for a debt.
but mortal hands could not exchange souls, his heart beat an unholy rhythm in his chest, behind his . )
His strength saps, and then- as if something to strike him from his daze, dizziness coming in a crash on his conscious and he has a moment of clarity again- the haze of his vision fading to darkness.
He grits his teeth, brings his cross up in an swift, abrupt motion, presses it against the flesh of the vampire’s throat, pushes her back. There’s a cry of pain, the hiss of burning flesh and rot in the dark- and the creature’s teeth have loosened from his neck, she’s jerking away from him but really- there’s nowhere to go. Perhaps due to intent, perhaps due to thoughtlessness- he does not relent, he can hear the sizzle of flesh and the smell of ash in the air.She’s struggling but she’s weak, her chains are cold iron and there is no strength in her to fight.
Dazed, he watches his blood fall to the ground, stain on the creature’s teeth in a deep crimson- he has the momentary, indistinct thought that it’s a mesmerizing sight. And suddenly it’s no longer necessity that stays his hand- it’s that ceaseless, hungry curiousity for more, to examine even as she struggles, jaw locked and still wordless cries emitting from her red, red lips– how would she look as she thrashed in her dying moments, the final vestiges of consciousness to be extinguished, the echo of her trapped soul twisting from the rot of the lingering undead to the dark of a demon’s flame.
No. Stop. Stop. Remember yourself. She’s the only one that’s lasted this long. You’re not finished with her yet. You’ll have to find another if she dies.
He lets his palm fall. She twitches on the floor, voiceless, unable to control her sensory system as she convulses. Castor clumsily wipes blood from his neck, sticky and slick, licks it from his fingertips. Metal taints his tongue, he sways a little- there’s blood on his cassock, blood staining the white of his collar.
“Sorry about that,” Castor murmurs, a faint, apologetic smile touching his lips though it’s a little woozy. His surroundings are a haze as he staggers to his feet, he straightens his collar over the sluggishly bleeding wound.
Silence. She’s shaking, unable to control her reaction as she spasms on the cold ground, kept semi-upright from the chains. As it is Castor is still lightheaded; if he had waited any longer to wrench away it might be a very different set of circumstances awaiting them.
But for now he looks down at the creature. She will heal- albeit slowly, her regenerative abilities dulled by thirst and the cold iron. Metal lingers in the air, thick and sweet as it dries. He’ll have to be a little more careful next time. Perhaps he needs to feed the creature more often, her sense of control is getting abysmal.
His strength returns, piece by unwilling piece, and a slow smile flickers across his lips. He steps closer, hand hovering over her head for a moment- the girl doesn’t even seem to notice- and then his wet fingers are pulling through her hair. As if petting a dog, he runs his bloodied hand through her scalp, a little ways short of tender.
"I’ll see you later,” he murmurs, and his fingertips curl before he steps away. “Cassandra.”
OPEN to ALL January 14th, 1979 Diagon Alley
English weather, predictably, is entirely unpredictable. The sun had been shining not five minutes ago- and certainly there was frost on the concrete and clouds faint in the air, the sun had been a cold one- but it had been at least somewhat sunny. And then the first droplets of rain had fallen. Within thirty seconds, in classic English fashion, it was pouring down.
Castor, as it is, manages to take shelter under a shop doorway. Sunday evening and everything is closed- perhaps one of the cons of a wizarding war, shops ran on an unspoken curfew, closing before dusk could fully set in. Having stood in the rain for a minute or so and already he looks as if he’s fresh out of a shower.
When someone as unprepared for the weather as he is hurries to join him under the makeshift shelter, he turns his gaze to them. A rueful smile pulls on his lips as he sweeps hair from his eyes. “Lovely weather today.”
@khadijah-zabini January 9th, 1979 shades of black and white
Streetlamp illumination. The glimpse of a silver mask, light refracting in the dim before it’s gone again, hidden by darkness. Everything is steeped in shadow, a heaviness to disguise anything.
The sound of a wet body sliding to the ground, a squelch as it sinks into the mud. How deliciously unpleasant.
Castor glances around.
“Well. I’ve killed one of yours, you’ve killed one of mine.” His teeth gleam red- light on his teeth reflecting from a street sign. Almost the shade of blood. Precisely the colour of the devil. “I don’t suppose we could call it quits.”
@mollyaprewett January 30th, 1979 quiet corners
The tinkle of a bell sounds as he steps into the little bookshop, shutting the door behind him and glancing about the shelves. There were few customers at this time of day, and this shop in particular is tucked away towards the back of Diagon Alley, pressed between two bigger shops that overshadow it.
Castor has always meant to come in and browse.
And when he sees her, Molly Weasley looks so at home amongst the books he almost doesn’t notice it’s her. He pauses by the younger woman, turning to survey the selection of books on the shelves. There’s dust at the top of the shelf, but perhaps all that does is add to the sense of antique authenticity of the entire place. "Any recommendations?”
@whois-gilderoylockhart February 17th, 1979 on the rocks
A high class establishment, newly opened. He’d come for curiousity. The drinks at the very least, were palatable. He takes another sip of his scotch, content for now with watching, with waiting. Patience, after all, is a virtue. He’s not inclined to mingle just yet.
And when someone slips into the seat beside his, it seems waiting has its perks too.
"Can I buy you a drink?” Castor offers, smiling at the youth who has joined him- light hair and blue eyes, almost too young to be in such premises. And perhaps his gaze just briefly rakes the other’s frame in a manner that treads the line of propriety- that he knows will be seen.
@cassandraburke February 20th, 1979 oil on canvas
The gallery tonight is quiet chatter and glasses of champagne held between gloved fingers- it is, after all, the night before the exhibit opens, attendance by invitation only, a chance for the more high class buyers to purchase the pieces they most wanted. Indeed the artists are present too, hovering in their particular sections of the exhibit, smiling to various degrees of nervousness as they hand out business cards and discuss their pieces.
Castor does prefer Baroque- Itialian baroque, his home is scattered with them, on the walls and behind couches, tasteful and rich- but modernism has its own loveliness, even if it is an appeal that rarely moves him enough to purchase. So he walks the exhibit, lingers for longer at some pieces and passes others entirely.
Conversation is not something he intends on striking up with anyone tonight- for now he is content to sip champagne and admire the art. And yet upon the sight of a familiar figure- he reevaluates. A knifeblade smile slants his lips. Castor joins Cassandra beside a painting, charm already wrapping around him like a tangible thing, magnetic in its pull.
"Miss Burke.” He smiles, “What a pleasant surprise.”
@dork-cresswell March 7th, 1979 put a record on
More Dark artifacts, uninteresting, tasteless, dull- all the more interesting ones had already been taken by connoisseurs such as him. Nothing interesting to be looked at, or perhaps he should try visiting Algiers next time. They had a particularly extensive market there, though he’d need to find a contact to get him through to a dealer.
He turns away from the window instead of letting his gaze linger more, making his way from Knockturn back to Diagon Alley. There goes another hour, ticked off from his day. And then, as he turns into the main street, someone walking past who almost collides with him- someone with very familiar features.
"Dirk, hello there.” Pleasant surprise, as if he’s been caught unawares. He’s already thinking a little ahead- casting his gaze over the other and perhaps he won’t be returning home so quickly after all. “I didn’t see you, I’m sorry. You alright?”
@walburgaxblack January 20th, 1979 children’s games
Pureblood society is almost woefully unaffected by the war- the soirees remain identical, lavish expense and extravagance. It’s rather a shame that they’ve become one of the only places Castor can socialize with friends past. Or, in some cases, to see family members he’s been rather remiss in visiting.
And he is very fond of this particular family member.
"Bergie!” Delight, unfiltered in his tone. Perhaps he does take a particular relish in tormenting his older cousin. He prefers to think of it as a result of his upbringing. “It’s really been too long.”
@katrinaxparkinson February 15th, 1979 fashionably early
Order meetings are often useless, but turning up is always a necessity; as per usual he arrives with time to spare. And somehow on this occasion, he’s somehow found himself arriving entirely too early. Almost an hour too early, with little on his hands but time. Coincidences, coincidences.
Perhaps it had something to do with the ill-mannered client at lunch.
He could certainly find something to do with this time, but upon seeing another earlycomer, he decides perhaps he might take his chances with a different diversion altogether. “Katrina.” A note of pleasure weaves into his voice. “It’s good to see you.”
@andromedaxunchained February 29th, 1979 any way the wind blows
There’s another cracked shop window in Diagon. A little bit of a gory stain to decorate the brick. He does like the war, it makes for a much lovelier backdrop to society, a little bit of blood and carnage to stir things up, an unwanted, spurned lover always returning to the painted stage. And the way it hovered on the edges of every day life made things a little more exciting- there was always the small, niggling fear there would be an unanticipated attack, some skirmish or battle.
Castor is on his way home when he encounters her, down a twist in Diagon Alley and then- well, there she is. He’d say Andromeda was his favourite niece but he had three, and favouritism was rather impermissible.
“It’s been awhile since we’ve met. How’s Dora.”
@cressidanott February 16th, 1979 rondo in c
The string quartet is playing somewhere in the depths of mansion. Cello and violin, coalescing into a melody amplified by the charms set over the estate. Castor mingles with the other guests, drinks wine and makes smalltalk- he has yet to have found the happy couple to congratulate them on their silver wedding anniversary.
But in the meantime, unhurried in his search for the two, he’s found himself a lovely distraction. Cece is beautiful as always, he’s drawn to her as one might draw to a particularly fanciful creature in a sea of asininity. “Hello there love.”
@xalice-clara January 24th, 1979 back alley waltz
Separation, a blast of light that sends them careening in opposite directions- and then there’s one on his tail and another two on hers. Movement. Running. Swerving into another alley, red lighting from his wand as it shoots towards his enemy. It misses, but so does the green that hurls towards him, a shout of Avada Kedavra that streaks past his ear.
Blood rushes as ichor through his veins, sing a jagged song of gore and carnage. His teeth are bared in a lion’s smile, sharp in the dark, waiting to glut on sinew and flesh.
It’s a shame wizards leave their duelling to the wand. When his own is thrown from his grasp, he doesn’t even stop. An exhale. A smile. Shock widens the Death Eater’s eyes under the metal mask. And then there’s blood spilling from their mouth and blood through the mouthpiece, trickling as drool down their chin.
Smoothly, slowly, he twists the knife. Nobody ever said Castor couldn’t mix business and pleasure- though he can hear the sounds from the next alley ahead, and perhaps he should not stay here overly long. Just long enough to make this intimate. They choke, drowning in their own blood.
He’s gone before the body falls. Now, just to hope Alice isn’t dead yet.
@evanrosierx February 21st, 1979 skin graph
Dim lights and smoky shadow, the flash of some familiar face half hidden in the gloom. Illumination. Darkness. He finds he’s in the mood for a hunt tonight, itches for a thrill in his blood- would be impatient for it, if he didn’t know himself better.
And in the middle of the indistinct haze, a flash of dark hair catches his awareness, shadowed eyes and the scent of cologne as their shoulders brush. Perhaps there is something interesting tonight after all.
“Well well,” his lips curve into a smile, “What’s a pretty thing like you doing in an ugly place like this.”
@nataliedupont February 23rd, 1979 sentimental company
Musa, mihi causas memora, quo numine laeso. His finger traces the page, a furrow between his brows as he translates- a little imperfectly, from memory. He’s always been remiss in his readings of Virgil, it’s about time he settled down and got down to it. And yet, barely six pages in, a faint ping on the wards alerts him to someone stepping onto the grounds-- he stills, eyes lingering on the page. Not an intruder, but a guest.
Slipping a bookmark between the pages and folding the book shut, he stands to approach the window, eyes falling on the solitary figure approaching from the gate. Virgil, it seems, must wait; a faint smirk slants his lips as he turns. He supposes he should go down to greet his caller.
@orionblvck February 27th, 1979 string theory
Castor is busy charming a young lady when a glimpse of black hair appears from the corner of his eye. Even as his focus draws to the disappearing figure he doesn’t miss a beat in his conversation, his gaze unfaltering as it returns to the girl in front of him. But barely a minute later he’s found himself apologizing to her, the sweet young thing, brown hair and doe eyes, the sapphire nestled between the hollows of her throat an exquisite match to her dress-- pleasant smiles and a promise of ‘later’ as he presses the curve of his mouth to her fingertips.
Plucking a fresh glass of champagne from a nearby tray he’s gone, left gliding through the crowd, a word and a murmur in every ear as he seeks. The dance may be on the ballroom floor, but spinning through the pockets of pureblood conversation is a dance in itself. Patience, in the end, has it’s reward- he finds Orion by the edge of the dance, falls in beside him with the slant of a smile and a greeting. “Good evening, cousin.”
@selinasxpworthy February 25th, 1979 // 23:32:46 add some dramatics
Perhaps trying to drink each other under the table could have gone better. Everything’s gotten a little blurry around the edges. With a drunken precision, he flags down the bartender for another round of shots.
“So-” he begins, turning to his companion, and if the movement is a little woozy he pays it no mind- it’s the inescapable byproduct of being completely smashed. Although it is rather criminal how he manages to hold onto most of his sobriety while wrecked. His drinking buddy may or may not have fared worse. “Sapworthy!”
He pauses. A wicked smirk- or it would be wicked, if he wasn’t so drunk- crosses his lips. It turns into more of a sleazy grin instead. “You doing alright there?”
