Ethereal | Fred Weasley (ALL CHAPTERS ON MY PAGE) CHAPTER 6: THE RESTRICTED SECTION
"Quite the impressive duo you two make–" a voice bellowed from behind Emmy. It was so strong and callous that Emmy flinched in fear. She watched Fred's eyes narrow onto the man behind her.
Fred stepped forwards before moving in front of Emmy, "--and what do we owe this pleasure, Lucratious?" Fred asked, a twinge of sarcasm dripping off his lips. Lucritious walked towards the pair and Emmy watched Fred's arm go further back to create space between Emmy and the man. Lucritious simply grinned before tapping on the glass of one of the sitting beakers.
"Oh... nothing, just paying a visit to our newest professors and seeing how the first few courses went?" Lucritious asked. Emmy slid further towards Fred's back, hiding behind him but maintaining eye contact with Lucritious. Fred stayed quite a while.
"We're doing quite well as you can see and have plenty of grading to do so if you'll excuse us--" Fred said brashly. Lucritious just chuckled. Emmy looked at Lucritious and then to Fred. Emmy felt a lightbulb go off in her head.
The dark-haired man did look a little pale to the eye, his black cape really pulled together an ominous 'Dracula' vibe to his whole get-up. 'But how would a vampire possibly be able to control his urges around students?' Emmy thought to herself.
Nevertheless, the stare held between both Fred and Lucratious could surely kill at any given moment. Emmy felt her breath hitch as she caught Lucratious' stare. 'What if he was the reason Fred was back? What if he really was-- a vampire?' Emmy pondered. If that really was the case– then Emmy would have a lot on her hands for the upcoming year.
"Anyway, I best be going– don't want to interrupt your 'grading' as I can see that is going very well at this time. I'll see you two at dinner. I take it?" He grinned.
"Not a chance," Fred spit coldly. Emmy was even surprised by Fred's harshness.
"I'm sorry, what Fred meant to say was perhaps another time," Emmy politely declined with a smile. Lucratious' grin stretched wider across his face.
"Oh most definitely Miss Lupin. I do SO hope to hear the many stories of your adventures with several of my cousins amongst Illvermorny. I have heard much about your professional portfolio– we have much to discuss," Lucratious said. The smile never left his face as he proceeded to the door, "Oh, and Fred, one more thing– try not to offend your new-found-friend here with your poor manners. It's very rude."
Fred lunged forward and Emmy grabbed his shoulder as the man's hideous laughter echoed throughout the hallway.
"Stop! It's not worth it," Emmy protested. Fred flung himself away from her.
"I can't believe you just offered to even share a meal with that creep! He's not worth it, Emmy! He's dangerous!" Fred shouted. Emmy flinched at his tone.
"I--I'm sorry..." she cowered. Fred's eyes softened at her sudden change of demeanor. He sighed, turning his head towards the door.
"Look, just stay as far away from him as possible Emmy. I have a feeling this won't be the last time we see him," Fred said. Emmy nodded towards the floor. Fred grabbed his book off of the chair before darting out the door, "I'll see you around."
Emmy kept her gaze on the stool in front of her. She hated yelling. She was sure it was just out of concern but did she really deserve to be shouted at over something she wasn't even sure of herself? She sighed before turning around and beginning to pack up her bag.
"Hello?" a sing-songy voice called out.
"Yes?" Emmy asked, turning around. Emmy met the gaze of a brown-haired woman. A well established witch– by her velvet robes and soft look about her.
"I apologize for the intrusion. My name is Hermione Weasley. I really should have introduced myself sooner, however my arrival to Hogwarts was partially delayed," Hermione managed nervously, "I knew your mother and father, Remus and Tonks, some time ago."
Emmy smiled, "I'm glad to hear that they were so loved by many."
Hermione smiled at her, "I once helped Remus during a very intense moment of my life– what an experience that was! I cannot imagine what it was like growing up with an animagus!"
"Yeah, it was quite wild. I learned quickly at the age of 4 how to help my mom brew wolfsbane to help him through his harsher episodes," Emmy remarked. Hermione nodded in understanding.
"I see. Well it looks like you have found a new friend in my brother-in-law, and that is great to hear! I know he was worried about being stuck with some old-hag," Hermione scoffed. Emmy recalled back to what Fred's description of her once– was on the train and grinned at the thought.
"Are you the one that is married to Charlie?" Emmy asked. Hermione burst into a fit of laughter.
"Merlin, no! Fleur is married to him," Hermione corrected. Emmy pondered for a moment.
"Fred never told me that," Emmy expressed, "I know Fleur. I taught alongside her at Beaubaxton's Academy."
Hermione smiled, "She is quite the herbologist."
"I always thought that Fred had just one sibling," Emmy noted.
"Oh no, just one?!" Hermione laughed again. Emmy started to feel like she was really clueless about the man she thought she had come to know fairly well over a few hours, "He has a twin brother named George, two older brothers– Bill and Charlie, and a few younger siblings Ron and Ginny. I am married to Ron and Harry is married to Ginny."
'Ginny?' Emmy thought to herself. The name swam around in her brain.
"Ginny Weasely?!" Emmy spit out in realization. Emmy thought her head was going to explode.
"You know her?" Hermione asked.
"Know her? She is famous at Illvermorny! Ginny is only one of the best selling authors in all of Wizarding-America!" Emmy exclaimed.
Hermione chuckled, "Ah yes, our beloved writer."
"How crazy is that? I had no idea," Emmy said, leaning against a desk. The pair was quiet for a moment.
"Where is Fred?" Hermione asked. Emmy felt her shoulders drop once-more.
'Should I even mention anything?' Emmy thought to herself. Hermione studied her look intently.
"You're fine to trust me if that's what you're worried about," Hermione said soft-spokenly. Emmy nodded.
"Does the name Lucritious Sevvoy ring a bell to you?" Emmy asked. Hermione thought for a moment, bringing her hand up to her chin.
"Not at all," she said. The pair fell silent again. "However, there is a restricted section in the library that I'm sure we could take a look at."
Emmy perked up at the sound, "The restricted... section?" she asked skeptically.
"Yes! Come on!" Hermione said, grabbing Emmy's wrist without a second thought. Emmy waved her wand– bringing her book bag flying over her shoulder as Hermione dragged her along.
Hermione pushed open the metal gate to the restricted section. 'She's rather chummy with the librarian.' Emmy noted to herself. As the pair made their way through the shelves, Emmy rested her butt onto one of the hanging desks in front of one of the sections. She watched quietly as Hermione traced her fingers over several of the covers in front of her.
Hermione pulled one of the books off of the shelf before putting it onto the desk beside Emmy. She opened it before flipping through the index and finding a section on the Sevvoy's.
"'Long ago, the Sevvoy family was remembered for their part in the Warlock War of 1857. A vicious hoard of vampires pitted against the 'Wolves of Evermister?'" Hermione spoke aloud. Emmy leaned against the bookshelf. Maybe her theory hadn't been that far from the truth, "Nothing in here about Lucratious himself though."
Emmy nodded, a firm look of confusion and thought plastered across her face.
"What is it?" Hermione asked. Emmy moved the book towards her.
"Can I speak freely?" she asked.
"Just tell me," Hermione prodded.
"Fine, I think that Lucratious has something to do with Fred's return," Emmy whispered. Hermione stared blankly at Emmy.
"How can you be sure?" she asked.
"I cannot. I barely know him," Emmy admitted. Hermione groaned.
"Things can never be easy in this group, can they?" Hermione thought aloud.
"How so?" Emmy asked. Hermione smiled to herself.
"It's a story for another time perhaps but I'll leave it plainly– Harry, Ron, and I got up to several adventures during our time at Hogwarts. Since Harry was such a pivotal piece in the Wizarding War..." Hermione trailed off. Emmy just nodded in return.
"I see– your life has never been boring in that case," Emmy laughed.
"Understatement," Hermione sighed in agreement, "I do know that Fred isn't easily frightened."
Emmy nodded once-more, "Why else would he be so scared of Lucritious?"
Hermione continued to stare at the books in front of her. She stood up before turning back to the shelves behind her in search of another text.
Finding what she needed, she pulled down a book with broken stitched-leather from the shelf.
"I'll warn you now, this text isn't very polite," Hermione noted. Emmy watched as she gently rubbed the spine of the book. The book suddenly jerked open and Hermione pulled her head back quickly as it lunged towards her before she hit the lock with a clenched fist. The monster suddenly silenced itself and its pages fell open revealing strange text.
"Wow, that was– a lot," Emmy remarked. Hermione just laughed before reading on in the section. Emmy followed along beside her tracing the page for answers, "Werewolves?"
"If you want to find out why the Sevvoy family is so interested in you," Hermione said.
"In, me?" Emmy asked. Hermione nodded, "How would I be connected?"
"Emmy, werewolves and vampires? Hello?! Your father is a Lupin!" Hermione noted. Emmy sat back against the shelf of books.
"Here I was thinking I was finally in the clear," Emmy sighed.
"This family is never in the clear–" Hermione scoffed, "Anyway, here! It says that the trait is hereditary."
"What?!" Emmy asked, her heart sinking down into her stomach.
"Appears so!" Hermione said. Emmy felt her palms begin to sweat. She couldn't possibly be the reason such a grueling fate would be bestowed upon her own child. Emmy felt sick, "'Vampires and Werewolves are otherworldly creatures that exist within our magical plane. Not much has been documented within their short existence. According to many historical contexts– vampires have only existed since 1450 BM (before Merlin).'"
"All of the American timelines would align with that– at least from what I've heard about the population of vampiric blood remaining post-civil war times. The amount of vampiric blood actually doubled around that time," Emmy remarked.
"I never knew that," Hermione expressed.
"What else does it say?" Emmy asked. Hermione smiled at her interest.
"'Vampires often sustain themselves off of animals, humans, and most-of-all, high-valued mythical creatures,'" Hermione continued, "'They are typically described as having pale, waxy skin, and sharp fangs only being referred to as 'beings with legal protections in place preventing them from being....'" Hermione began to trial off into silence.
"Being what, Hermione?!" Emmy asked.
"'Exterminated...'" she finished. The pair was dead silent.
"So, if Lucratious really is a vampire then my theory is coming together," Emmy remarked. Hermione nodded.
"He's totally a vampire," they both said in succession. The girls both burst into a fit of laughter.
"So what is this 'theory' of yours then?" Hermione asked.
"Fred was raised up by Lucratious– that part I don't know much about. If that is the case then my original theory about the ministry using truth-serum potions on him to confirm his story about being brought-back would be a total farce," Emmy murmured beginning to walk back and forth amongst the aisle, "So if vampiric persons are indeed protected under the ministry then there would be no reason to investigate further upon verifying that he was indeed a vampire."
Hermione slouched down in her chair, "Is that so? What about the fangs?"
Emmy pulled back before deciding it was okay to show her. Emmy walked forwards before pulling her hand over her mouth and transforming her lips into those of a duck.
"Transfiguration!" Hermione blurted.
"Precisely. It would take major concentration– it's also not necessary to hide it since they are protected creatures– but who knows what shame many of them carry from the general wizarding public," Emmy expressed, glumly. There was another long silence between the pair.
"You aren't scared of him?" Hermione asked.
"Who? Fred? No– not a bit," Emmy smiled, "Vampire or not, it's a blessing that he was given a second chance."
Hermione grinned in happiness, "Certainly I do not envy that man's cravings whatsoever," Hermione noted, making Emmy laugh.
"Trust me, I have seen the worst of it. Dad's animagus once was fascinated by people wearing bright-green shirts. Let's just say we had a lot of green shirts piling up in the shed that we couldn't quite place our finger on. Even dad couldn't pinpoint the bizarre obsession as he claimed," Emmy recalled.
"Speaking of obsession, this Lucratious does seem rather interested in the pair of you— with popping up out of nowhere and what not," Hermione noted. Emmy nodded in agreement.
"I'm still not sure what to do about it all," Emmy sighed.
"Start by sticking around us," Hermione smiled.
"Right, you I am not worried about. Fred on the other hand–" Emmy groaned.
"Look, I did hear his outburst earlier and while I couldn't quite catch what he was upset about I can tell you that there is nothing you could have known without him telling you that could have made his harsh outburst hurt any less," Hermione sympathized.
"I still felt terrible when he ran out, I know I hardly know him but... the way he acted in there– and my reaction afterwards– I most certainly believe I may have deserved it in some way," Emmy said, rubbing her forearm in embarrassment.
"What could you have possibly done?" Hermione asked.
"Invited his aggressor to dinner," she admitted. Hermione winced.
"Yeah, that would do it," she sighed, "Regardless, the yelling was rather unnecessary don't you think?"
Emmy nodded in agreement.
"Just give him some space. It takes a lot to shake up Fred. You know that if he is upset it's often out of concern for those around him," Hermione smiled.
"I'm sure," Emmy smiled softly in return.
"Besides, he can't avoid us forever!" Hermione sang.
"Catch you at dinner then?" Hermione asked.
"I'll see you there," Emmy smiled. She quickly waved to the witch as Hermione closed the metal gate behind her.
Emmy was practically drowning in her thoughts, 'Fresh air.' she noted.
As Emmy went to stand a sudden magnetic pull began to force her backwards. A voice followed, "FAITH...!" it hissed from the shelf behind her.
Emmy wanted to scream, 'What is going on?!' she thought to herself.
"Fate..." the text hissed again. This time Emmy turned around coming face to face with a white tome.
"Des--sssssss--tiny," the book slithered. Emmy reached her hand towards the soft green glow emanating from the text.
"Emmy!" Tonks voice called out. Emmy's head shot backwards towards the voice.
"You mustn't Emmy! Don't touch the book!" Remus called out next– in warning. Emmy felt her blood pressure rising as she spun around in search of the voices.
"Dad!?" she choked out. Hearing their voices once more was indescribable. The book seized up in front of her slamming its pages shut and returning to the shelf once again.
Emmy fell to her knees, 'I can't touch the book,' she thought to herself as tears began to fall onto her skirt.
"Emmy?" Fred's voice broke through her mind.
"Fred?" she sobbed. Fred ran over to her quickly embracing her in a hug.
"What happened?!" he asked in concern.
"My mom, she was here! –and- Remus!" she sobbed. Fred continued to hold her tightly in his arms.
"It's okay! It's okay! Shhhhh–" he cooed.
"How did you find me?" Emmy asked through her tears.
"Hermione, I was passing her in the hallway just now," Fred spoke. Emmy found her courage to sit upright once more as the tears continued to litter her cheeks, "We should get you to the nurse– too much time in here does things to you," Fred noted– referring to the fact that they were still in the restricted section.
Emmy nodded as Fred stretched his hand out to help her up.
"Are you alright?" he asked, still holding her hand in his.
"No," Emmy replied. Fred frowned, pressing the palm of his hand to her forehead.
"You are a bit warm, let's go settle your nerves and we can talk about what happened a little later, okay?" Fred smiled, reassuringly. Emmy nodded once again, continuing to hold his hand as he guided her out of the library.
