Why did Tohru start crying on the roof with Kyo in Chapter 75?
Tohru is probably crying for a combination of reasons. She thinks to herself, “Why does my heart hurt so much? Like its being torn apart. Is it because my outrageous wish is so disheartening? Is it because I know that some wishes don’t come true? Even so … I wish … I wish …” Later, in chapter 76, Tohru references that moment and feeling of her heart being torn apart again:
This was after Kyo harshly said to her, “It’s got nothing to do with you!” Before Tohru started crying on the roof, Kyo had said the following about her one day falling in love with some guy:
Tohru is dealing with her growing feelings towards Kyo. Later during the school trip she thinks about Kyo, “I wonder if someday [he’ll push me away].” and thinks, “Because of a single sentence [from him] I get shaken … or I get happy.” Tohru is dealing with feelings of a desperation to be near Kyo and that his words, feelings, and actions can have an extreme effect on her now because her feelings towards him are so strong. She is also dealing with the knowledge she has since the Summer House trip that Kyo is destined to one day be locked away and in that way disappear from her life. Although all of Tohru’s feelings are not clear to herself (she says she doesn’t know why she is crying), when she starts crying on the roof imagery shows her thinking about how Kureno and Arisa can’t be together, how Momiji and Momo can’t be together, and thinking about her mother’s death (when she thinks ‘I know that some wishes don’t come true’). Tohru likely becomes overwhelmed with emotion because of her complicated feelings about wanting to break the curse so that Kyo is not taken away from her life, like her mother was, and general feelings about how people are taken away from each other and prevented from being together despite desperate wishes otherwise. Additionally, words that Kyo speaks towards her that indicate some sort of distance being placed between them have started to trigger strong feelings of sadness for Tohru, even as much as her “heart being torn apart”.
