i don’t know what the general fandom consensus is (i’ve only seen some opinions on here and in the reddit threads) but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say that kate’s speech to sawyer when he’s half-conscious is her believing that sawyer = wayne, but rather sawyer equals something that makes kate feel good and she constantly has to grapple with the fact that she’s poisoned and rotted to her core with a man like wayne inside of her very own dna. she doesn’t believe she’s destined for something of her own happiness when she finds this out. how could she like someone like sawyer (who is flawed) when she is just as flawed as herself? this discourse also shows up in the love triangle discourse and how sawyer versus jack is perceived by kate as bad versus good, but i also think kate does not believe she deserves nor literally even CAN accept her feelings for sawyer at this point because of wayne and the fact that he will forever be inside of her. and the dilemma of kate’s morals and how she sees herself and her actions versus jack’s and sawyer’s is something so palpable in this scene, and a great demonstration of an inkling of kate’s awareness that she needs to accept herself (and the feelings she should be able to feel freely)
