today is my last shift at what was my first ever job

ive been there for 6 years... im so glad to be moving on

i dont know how much more my body could take of that tbh

im grateful of course for what experience ive gotten from working there or else i wouldnt have been able to land this new job focused on customer service

but it seriously kind of sucked. sure, i was never bored - but i also struggled to find at the end of the day that id done well. i definitely tried my best but there was always something to find fault with. for someone like me who takes work very seriously, it was disheartening at best to feel like truly doing a good job was impossible. i couldnt win. no amount of hustle could make up for my natural deficiency at being observant of my surroundings and incapability of prioritizing tasks “right.” i put that in quotes because i dont honestly know whether my superiors were overcritical of me and the work they expected of me was beyond what anyone was really capable of, or if i was actually lacking.

eventually my discouragement got the better of me and i stopped putting in as much effort. i kind of regret that, but i still resent my job for not paying me more for what they expected me to do. i still believe we weren’t paid enough. i guess that was my excuse for not putting in the effort - i worked as hard as i felt was appropriate for the pay.

im really determined to do well at this next job though. i know it has a lot to do with what kind of work i can get in the future.

Try to remember that your partner might need more explanation for your thought process than you think is necessary, especially if it’s a “negative” thought.

“I disagree with you” –> “I disagree with you, but I’m not angry at you, and I’m not going to yell at you for not agreeing with me.”

“I’m hurt by what you did” –> “I’m hurt by what you did, but I don’t hate you, and I don’t think you’re a bad person. I just want to discuss it.”

“I’m frustrated” –> “I’m frustrated, but it doesn’t mean I don’t care about you.”

What feels obvious to you–the underlying asumption that of course you still love this person, of course this is just a single feeling–is not obvious to someone who has been trained to flinch at every criticism. Take the time to explain your feelings and their meanings to ease both your fears.

I remember reading something about a landlord being pissed that a family he evicted had a playstation and I’m like, so how many months’ rent were you gonna buy it for? Why should they sell something of mediocre financial value (a used gaming system) for a pittance in comparison to the value they get for it, for … what, a week’s rent? Which will swiftly disappear into the landlord’s pocket and leave them in the same situation next month, only sadder?

There’s a particular sort of antipoor/poor-shaming entitlement that expects any given poor person to be in such desperate straits that they’re willing to sell anything they own for a fraction of the value it has for them. Wherefrom you get the regular whinings of a jackass with money getting pissy when people without it don’t enrich him further at their own expense. As though, having failed to extract the requisite amount of money he thinks they should be dispersing (despite probably thinking they’re not worth being paid that much in the first place), he wishes to take alternative payment by draining their happiness as well.

Dementor Capitalism is demanding that a poor person let you exploit them in order to earn the assistance that is then still referred to as charity.

yes. while i appreciate the reality that spending less on some things so you can afford to pay your bills is a legitimate strategy for keeping your head above the water financially, to leave it at that is a disservice to the poor.

it fails to address the dimension of justice. is it fair that a rich person has the extra cash to spend on that latte, and a poor person doesn’t? you must examine what circumstances brought that person into poverty. are they a victim of a system that takes and takes from them only to lay it at the foot of an already enormous hoard belonging to a minuscule elite? (yes.)

it is wrong to deprive people - by shame, or direct threat - of the small things that bring us comfort, and punish them for wanting that comfort in the first place.
