thinking about aubrey and mari's relationship they drive me insane

aubrey's mother being largely uninvolved in her life (which gets worse after her father leaves. but that's unimportant right now) so mari's her one big female role model... she's the one person who really gets aubrey. gets how weird boys are in middle school gets how strict dads can be over stupid stuff gets how hard it is to just exist when you're 12 and a girl. i like tinging it w/ 'aubrey has a very small crush on mari' bc i'm a lesbian and god knows i wouldve if an older girl would just let me be myself unapologetically when i was 12 years old.

aubrey being a largely lonely child before meeting everyone else makes it worse.... the first girl she meets who loves her unconditionally is dead and aubrey is no longer the girl mari loved. would mari still love her as she is now? when she's no longer a child, when she's since been hardened by the world?
