The fundamental thing about Kim, that I hold ever in my mind while writing him, is that he works very hard to remain composed, calm, boring, to not react, to be patient and reserved and sensible, but he is actually in his heart of hearts a little vain, a little cutting, a little judgemental, and also kind of a little shit, and he absolutely revels in the fact that Harry gives him the chance to air that side of himself.
Kim is somebody who edits himself and redacts himself and controls himself to try to earn the respect of people who do not respect him, to maintain his precarious place of authority (authority that is just handed to people like Harry because of who they are) and grudging acceptance. And Harry does respect him—idolizes him, even—while also drawing out that playfulness in him. And not only that—Harry thinks he's fucking *delightful*. He thinks Kim's bitchy comments are *so* clever and his flyboy shtick is *so cool* and he makes space for Kim to nerd out over mechanics and he finds it so impressive and even endearing. No wonder Kim is down bad for him. I think we can reasonably infer there have been precious few times in Kim's life when he had that kind of unqualified respect from someone who just openly digs the shit out of him.
