Writer’s Self Care
As a writer I’m…not good at taking care of myself. But here are some things I’ve been trying lately to get better.
Taking incremental breaks: By now I think we can all agree that “real writers write every day” is not true and also terrible. Real writers need breaks if they want to fight burn out and exhaustion. See if you can schedule breaks ahead of time. This can mean five minute breaks in a large writing session, a day off a week, a week off every few months, or all of the above.
Rewards not punishment: Motivation can be an effective tool for getting work done for some writers (definitely not all). Motivation works well for me, but sometimes I’m cruel to myself: “Write and edit three chapters this weekend or you can’t play games Sunday night.” Unrealistic goals mixed with negative consequences does not a happy writer make. And this unhappy writer doesn’t write so good. Instead? Choose reasonable goals with a small, positive reward at the end. “When I finish editing this chapter, I’ll get a slice of cake.” “When I finish this draft, I’ll buy that game I’ve been saving up for.” etc. Find things to look forward to!
Making writing time pleasant: I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Candles, tea, coffee, snacks, an aesthetically pleasing cafe, special playlists-do what you need to do to make writing time special. Not only will it make the writing process more enjoyable, but when you only have those things when you’re writing, you’ll start to associate them with writing. That means when you light that certain candle that you always have going during a writing sprint, your brain will automatically get into writing sprint mode. You just hacked your own psychology.
No more trashcan memes: I know this is hard. But the more we make jokes about never writing, the more we associate ourselves as people who never write. ‘Fake it till you feel it’ is a real thing. If you pretend to be someone who never writes, you’re never going to write. if you pretend to be someone who does write, you’re going to write.
Instead of writing….: Writers block doesn’t always wait until our scheduled break. Sometimes we sit there and nothing comes out. If you’ve marked off time for writing and the words aren’t flowing, don’t just default to youtube or netflix (I’m talking directly to myself right now). Rereading previous scenes or even previous drafts could jog you in the right direction. Consider your outline to figure out the problem that’s stopping you. Make a playlist and daydream up a new scene. Talk to other writers to jog your brain. Writing isn’t always putting words on a page. The other stuff is work too.
In case anyone noticed..?
Yeah, leaving an incredibly demanding job and finding a much less involved one has actually caused me to lose focus on writing and commit more effort and time to home life. I want back in. I feel the wall. I have to break it, and it'll be brick(A), by brick(Z), by brick(wedding), by brick(consuming video games), by brick(exhaust).
D&d?
Anybody else play d&d? I'm thinking of posting my drawings of characters...
Leaving my job, will it help my focus?
Argh. It's been a but since I've been on here, and I feel like such a flake. My boss told me my schedule doesn't fit the need of the business anymore, and that he'll begin scheduling me whatever he needs in a week.
So...I put my two weeks in. He said it was unexpected, but this is what happens when you refuse to acknowledge the needs of your workers. As a mom with my mom and fiancé watching both boys when I can't, you wouldn't think a set schedule every week would hurt a business, but add structure. I know my schedule shouldn't be the sun to this solar system of workers, but if my need is greatest, and I'm the 4th person hired into my department? I'm a little distraught.. and confused .. panicked about finding something new in the little time he'll give my schedule to me... but if, IF there's a little downtime between jobs? I think I'll get my house in order, come up with a game plan, and get some fucking writing done.
When Intros are hard to write..
OHMYGOD INTROS ARE KIND OF HARD. TO. WRITE. I have a little to go off of, but i want to know what some of you think people really want to know about? How in depth would YOU go??
Character Tropes
Kindly tagged by @scribbling-salmon to pick archetypes or tropes for up to three OC’s, and then to explain further how they break that trope. I love this idea, it helps build real individuals!
Salix Birch- The Loner
Salix is more isolated by others, either by jealousy, fear, or ignorance due to his abilities. He’s a silent, strong, well versed young man who works dilligently towards his goals, with little interference due to the “loner” title. He’s really just focused, with little time to waste on others misunderstanding him.
He could easily make friends, and once he does, he will do anything to keep them safe. He is loyal and protective and just. Once he finally gets a taste of family, he will gladly hold them tight.
Bronwyn Baighler- Femme Fatale
A brutal badass wielding a war hammer and shield to hold her own in any battle approaching her. She’s well equipped to travel the road alone, and her mischievious smile can charm, amuse, and frighten. Beneath the surface of her worn torn skin and armor lies guilt and shame of a secret she holds close to the chest, ever weakening her.
Palasa Imber- The Herald
He’s so much more than “Take the path ahead to so and so City, home of the wizard you seek!” Salix’s first true friend, first interest, the flame beneath his calm cool skin. Yes , of course, I chose “herald” to say that Palasa is truly one of the two springboards to catapault Salix into his confusing, constantly diverting maze adventure. But! He is a fiery defender of friends, a consant competition for
Salix, a well humored companion, and a shoulder to lean on.
I’m keeping a close eye on this one, I’m loving him:)
I’m tagging @ourpasteldream @jonahwrites to give this a try, and if anyone else sees this as a fun edition to their writeblr, please complete and post!
10 Songs!
@jonahwrites tagged me kindly to put my whole library on shuffle and to list the first 10 songs to play in order. This could get weird...

2. Green Day- Redundant

7. Twenty One Pilots- Fairly Local
8. System of A Down- Streamline
9. Queen- Break Free
10. The Lonely Island- Mother’s Day (MY GUILTY PLEASURE NOOO)
I tag no on and as that if you like the look of this game, do it and post it!
Another 11/11/11!
I was once again kindly tagged to answer 11 questions, but now are mostly about my writing and reading habits by @trickster-writes (Thanks, friend!)
1. Who are your favorite authors and why?
I jump around a lot in my reading, but I have a new love and possibly obsession over Stephen King. Not to original, I know, but I greatly enjoy where his writing takes me. I have the right amount of patience for his thick books! I also enjoy the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, even if I deeply deeply hate Eragon. The kid, not the book.
2.How do you develop your OCs? (OC sheets, answering questions/prompts, writing aimlessly, daydreaming)
I am a huge daydreamer, or even make believer (usually in the shower or while home alone.) Speaking outloud or thinking about their movement, speech patterns only happens when I’m by myself. I further those ideas by answering questions on OC sheets. I find them pretty helpful!
3. What is the longest you have ever worked on a WIP?
I worked on a supernatural thriller all through junior high into high school. 4 years altogether! I’m rewriting it now, I was a real dummy back then.
4. How do you find names for your OCs?
I do a lot of research, and depending on where the story takes place or where I got inspiration from, I find names relating to it.
5. If your OCs had a group chat, what would it be called?
Knightly
6. Which of your OCs get along the best? Which despise each other?
This is kind of hard to say, I haven’t made Salix very many friends, just too particular people, and I’ve been told one is pretty taboo now, so I’ll need to rewrite one. Writing is harrrd.
7. Who is your smartest OC?
Salix is a well versed, level headed character I took a lot of pride in creating. He’s a smart boi.<3
8. What is the weirdest thing you’ve reasearched for a WIP?
Werewolf legend timelines.
9. How long do your writing sessions usually last?
They can last between an hour (uninspired, distracted) to three!
10. Do you write best at day, night, or in between?
I write best at night with a coffee and the kids in bed, if I ever get the chance to write during the day, it’ll be when both kids are in school all day.
11. How do you motivate yourself to write?
With coffee, candles, music, ambient noises, moon light, and a future possibly able to pay for my sons’ colleges. :)
I tag everyone who wants to fill this out, because if you wanna, just do it:)
FINALLY
I have time to go active tonight! I have a couple tags to reply to, and i'll be working on an intro for #knightly. STAY TUNEDDDDD
This is when I ask for more writers attentions...
Because I have very few writer friends or followers on here, and I will gladly follow you back and interact as often as possible!
I am:
A loyal and honest person, supportive and creative, very delayed in my own writing and NEVER competitive. I will give feedback, I will answer asks, and I most likely will smile to myself happily if I get a new follow and will be excited to learn more about you. I’m also looking for people to help my broaden my own mind, people who will answer a question honestly without judgement.
11/11/11
Tagged kindly and considerately by @scribbling-salmon , I’ve been asked to answer 11 questions about my OCs. :)
1. What instrument does your OC play?
#mapmaker’s Aurel has his father’s violin, but it sits in the corner of his room waiting for him. #knightly’s Salix could probably keep a good beat if the mood struck him well!
2. What’s your favorite line from you WIP so far?
#knightly- “His tiny chest expanded as color flooded back to his reddening cheeks, The Mothers were the first to hold the babe reborn.”
3. Which of your OCs would win if they fought each other?
Between Aurel and Salix, absolutely Salix. He’s trained and prepared, while Aurel is chaotic and too energetic.
4. Which of your OCs has killed before, and why?
Aurel is made to “right some wrongs”, but hasn’t killed a living being. Salix has killed, with great guilt and many consequences, to protect a loved one.
5. If your OC saw a small child wandering around, what would they do?
Aurel would have that kid in his arms so fast, cheering them up with faces and kindness. He’d provide food and introduce them to his pets, and take them home no matter how far that was. Salix would silently lead them, at a great distance, to the nearest town and to a law man. He would allow a few gentle smiles to escape, but he’s selfconscious about the look of his mouth.
6. Does your OC have any prejudices? How aware of them are they, and what are they doing to combat them?
I honestly don’t know how to answer this question, I don’t think I’ve ever made a character with outright prejudices. Their stroies aren’t even half way done, so I suppose I’ll see what gets written out!
7. If your OC was real, would you be friends with them?
I think I’d make great friends with Aurel, he’s playful and kind, and he seems like great fun! Salix, I think would need time to open up, but I am a patient person with people. I’d wait to know him better.
8. If your OC had a blog, what would they post?
Salix with a blog.. He’d most likely follow all of the nature photographers and repost any photos in the woods. Forests warm him. Aurel on the other hand would privately use a blog as a journal, recording his occult findings and outings. Publicly, he’d post about travel and cartography.
9. Which Hogwarts house does your OC belong to?
Aurel is no doubt a Gryffindor, while Salix is a true Hufflepuff.
10. Is there an album you most associate with your WIP?
I really only work from a couple different albums while I write anything! Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns, and Imagine Dragon’s Evolve.
11. Which of your OCs is most likely to start a fight?
Aurel will start a fight with enthusiasm and gusto!
Here is where I am supposed to tag a few people to complete this questionaire as well! It’s supposed to be 11... but I don’t know 11 people on here, still starting out and slowly opening up.
I tag @ourpasteldream to complete these same questions. Good luck!
Wooooow it’s been a bit.
I returned to work! YAAaaaaeeeeewww..
Somehow it’s not as amagical as my job thinks, but I must return, you know... for money and such. A goal of mine will be to write on here at least once a week, wishful thinkingly twice, but I’ll be honest, once is already a stretch for my bad habits and laziness. My keyboard is sticky, as is a constant curse of having an almost five year old running about, but I’ll continue to keep him. He’s kinda cute and sweet, and I have to do my best to add to a better generation of boys and such. Such responsibility with two of them now.
It’s nice having a little boy who loves books though, I’ve definitely made him a future reading enthusiast! I remember getting grounded from video games or from seeing friends and sitting in my room pretending to pout under my covers, but really reading a book I got from the library. I hope he continues that way, but can grab a few more friends than I did. I was too weird for so many other people, they didn’t want to come over. They’d cry on the phone when I’d make the call with my mom’s help, and their mother’s would make them pack them a backpack and tell them to suck it up. Not all of them, but most. I learned early not to take it personally, though, just to keep on being me. Better people will come and would laugh and smile with me, and wouldn’t cry at the sound of my voice on the wall phone. I’ll help Z be better, I’ll help him see what I didearly, to let things roll off your shoulders early to live a happy life. To not hold onto what wants to escape.
