sarasota is a highly segregated, majority white city of medium size on florida’s west coast (about half way down the penis)
sarasota is a popular retirement and tourist destination for the uber wealthy, but has also been seen as a magnet district for families since it had one of the strongest public education systems in the state (even among the entire united states)
new college stood somewhere between the local community college and a “proper” university as far as enrollment went
new college is very small, reporting on the recent issues has listed the number of students as approximately 700
new college is known for being very progressive as compared to the rest of the sarasota community, welcoming and providing a safe space for students of color and lgbtq students
in the fall 2022 local elections, the school board of sarasota was filled with vocal right wing conservatives with public ties to organizations like the proud boys
already they kicked out the previous head of the school board, who was actually a conservative republican, just not extreme enough for the new regime
now dickhead desantis (governor of florida) has turned new college into his personal little project for shooting down “liberal ideology”
according to desantis, florida is “where woke goes to die” and he won the fall election by a significant margin last year
as a state university, desantis has forcibly replaced the majority of the new college board with cronies from his back pocket
they are eliminating diversity/equality/inclusion efforts at the school and forcing the curriculum to be Western civilization centered and completely uncritical
this is in addition to other education measures desantis has taken like banning AP african american studies in florida
while there really isn’t much that can be done, spreading the word is VERY IMPORTANT
desantis can not be allowed to become president of the united states, but most sources imply that he intends to run for election in 2024
he is basically if donald trump actually had brain cells, desantis is basically a megalomaniacal supervillain
eliminating new college is eliminating a safe space for minority individuals and depriving any prospective students of an affordable, enriching education
