Snape ♡
"Snape-the-teenager had a stringy, pallid look about him, like a plant kept in the dark. His hair was lank and greasy and was flopping onto the table, his hooked nose barely half an inch from the surface of the parchment as he scribbled."
"Snape’s always been fascinated by the Dark Arts, he was famous for it at school. Slimy, oily, greasy-haired kid, he was."

part two of marauders au characters in my artstyle, this time, here we go with young Severus Snape.

Happy new Year! Have a very severus Snape new year whatever that means
Forgive me for not falling to my knees because James Potter eventually learned not to publicly hex, assault, sexually assault, deform and humiliate random students for existing, in hallways at seventeen years old. People act like James underwent some massive redemption arc when his “growth” basically amounts to: he stopped openly bullying people as much. That too, only because he got busy dating Mary Sue. Bitch, your bars are in hell if you think a man becomes marriage material just because he stopped assaulting people in public.

Harry: I get it
Snape is tired of hospital food
There’s something I think people really need to understand when discussing Snape and the Death Eaters, and it’s that a lot of the discourse around him is intellectually dishonest to a ridiculous degree.
First of all, I’m the first person to say that comparing the Death Eaters to Nazis is politically inaccurate and honestly kind of lazy. The structure of Voldemort’s movement is not equivalent to historical fascism in the classical sense. Fascist movements like Nazism relied on mass propaganda, populist rhetoric, appealing to the working class, mobilising huge portions of the population through nationalist discourse, fearmongering and social alienation. Voldemort does not do that. Voldemort recruits primarily through aristocratic blood supremacy networks and old-money elitism. It’s a cult-like supremacist inner circle, not a mass political party built around public mobilisation.
But even putting that aside entirely, what genuinely blows my mind is how people talk about Severus joining the Death Eaters as if he was some fully formed 35-year-old man with a stable support system, financial security and emotional maturity making calculated ideological decisions. He was seventeen. Seventeen. Poor. Isolated. Abused. Socially alienated. Raised in violence. Repeatedly humiliated. Surrounded by people who either enabled his abuse or directly participated in it. And the only group offering him protection, belonging, validation and power was a radicalised extremist circle. And people act shocked that he got recruited?
I’m sorry, but some of you desperately need to leave fandom spaces and interact with actual human beings. Because in the real world, vulnerable teenagers get radicalised all the time. Into cults. Into gangs. Into extremist politics. Into abusive religious groups. Into criminal organisations. That’s literally how recruitment works. You target vulnerable people who have unmet emotional needs and no stable support systems.
And what makes this discourse even more exhausting is how deeply classist it is. Because let’s be honest here: if Severus had been a rich traumatised aristocratic boy from a respected family, half of fandom would be writing 800k redemption arcs about his “complexity.” But because he’s poor, socially awkward, visibly traumatised and emotionally dysregulated, people reduce him to “evil incel nazi.” Which is funny coming from fandom spaces that constantly scream about mental health awareness, trauma, neurodivergence and social justice until the traumatised person is unpleasant, angry, difficult or comes from a background they subconsciously look down on.
Because here’s the thing people don’t like admitting: trauma victims are not always nice. They are not always soft. They are not always emotionally articulate. They are not always healthy. Sometimes they’re bitter. Defensive. Volatile. Socially maladjusted. Hypervigilant. Sometimes they lash out. Sometimes they become deeply unlikeable before they heal , if they ever heal at all.
And Severus never got the chance to heal.
Some of you genuinely talk about a heavily traumatised, abused teenager recruited into extremism the same way conservatives talk about poor kids getting recruited into gangs: with zero structural analysis, zero empathy and zero understanding of how human vulnerability actually functions.
And yes, people can change. This is another thing fandom spaces seem incapable of understanding. Human beings are not static moral caricatures. I’m nearly thirty. I have met people who left cults. People who left extremist political groups. People who escaped abusive ideologies. People who were raised in deeply reactionary environments and later completely changed as adults. That happens constantly in real life. But apparently fandom morality has become so puritanical and chronically online that some of you think a person should be permanently defined by the worst thing they were manipulated into at seventeen, even if the rest of their life is spent trying to atone for it.
And honestly? A lot of this discourse reeks of people who have never interacted meaningfully with anyone outside their own social bubble. Because if you actually work with vulnerable people, poor communities, abuse victims, former addicts, ex-prisoners, traumatised individuals or radicalisation survivors, your perspective becomes a lot less simplistic very quickly. But instead fandom spaces are full of people who claim to care about nuance, rehabilitation, trauma and systemic violence while simultaneously reducing a traumatised abuse victim to a one-dimensional moral failure because he wasn’t “nice enough” about his suffering.
At that point you’re not progressive. You’re just judgmental with prettier vocabulary.
“I survived a Monday and for what? A Tuesday? Disgusting”
— Severus Snape, probably
Snape is definitely that one person who just drops the most unhinged traumatic lore randomly in conversations as if they were normal things
Like one time he and Rolanda Hooch ended up making face ice baths to see who'd last longer and he won (no small feat because a picture Rolanda Hooch is under the dictionary definitions of competitive and stubborn) and he casually went "yeah, it was easy, my old man sometimes held me under water if there was enough rain in the buckets under the holes in the ceiling when he was mad at me" and everyone else was like "wait what the fuck did you just say??!" and he just. continued to ask what was for lunch
Or the time poppy Pomfrey got mad because he had burns on his hand and didn't bother telling her and he was like "it's nothing, my old man would sometimes stub his cigarettes out on me" and she just stared at him because what do you even say to that?!
Or when he refuses to go out if the others are planning to drink because "I've had my fill of dealing with pissed adults, I'm not risking a broken rib because one of you decided to throw a bottle at me" and they're like "h-how do you even think that, what the fuck happened to you?"
Him and Minerva are standing outside or walking back to the castle after an Order meeting or something. She’s shivering and ask how the hell he isn’t cold and he’s just like, “I sometimes slept outside, rather risk hypothermia than be at home.” He learned that night that a) “?!??!???” Is in fact a distinct expression and b) no that is not in fact normal.
The teachers are talking about maybe putting warding under all the towers in case some idiot decides to go on a climbing expedition and he just laughs about as happily as a deer in headlights “yeah, more likely someone jumps off on purpose, hell, I damn near did after OWLs.” They are begging this man to go to therapy.
Someone dares ask why his hair is always so greasy. He reacts surprisingly calmly, simply states that his parents couldn’t always afford food, let alone shampoo, and his father probably wouldn’t have bothered in any case, so he never got in the habit. Now he mostly just feels like anything he doesn’t absolutely have to do is completely impossible, because he just doesn’t have the energy.
He’s often not present at meals and Pamona notices how thin he is and remarks on it. “I’m used to skipping meals,” he replies, completely non-chalantly. Upon concerned questioning he explains that his father used most of their money for booze and as a student he often avoided the great hall, because of all the bullying.
i don’t know how exactly to like… try to put across just how much severus snape must have practised being a person, once he left hogwarts, once he was able to.
like… the severus snape we see in the flashbacks in the books is…
jittery and tense, constantly on guard
as soon as james even said anything, he was already reaching for his wand, and i imagine he was kind of forced to be that quick for his guns at any point
“he walked in a twitchy manner that recalled a spider”
like… my point here is that not only are his clothes il-fitting, but so’s his body - he doesn’t know how to move in it, doesn’t know how to exude any kind of presence
no control to his speech at all, from what we can see?
he just throws out desperate curses and profanity when james disarms him and has him tied up
an even shorter temper than he has as an adult
the ill-fitting clothes only add to this idea that he’s like, an object of scorn rather than something to be feared
i know they give child snape a posh boy accent in the movies but british movies always give everyone a posh accent, and it would actually make sense for him to have a northern accent, given that he came from slap bang in the middle of the black country with a working class da
people absolutely look down on regional accents like this, and people are p much automatically looked at as uneducated if they don’t sound like a posh twat
but when we see him later on, he’s collected and controlled, walks with a smooth confidence and an easy grace. much of his speech is delicately poetic and very carefully measured, and almost rehearsed
almost rehearsed? no. i feel like he spends a lot of time working on scripts for himself and then working with them, rehearsing what other people might say to him and how he might respond, making little speeches for some things
and he’s very careful about his presentation and how it comes across, how he seems, the energy he exudes
like… he rebuilt himself, ripped himself apart and then kind of put himself back together, because he knew that he wasn’t good enough, that people looked at him and were disgusted with him, so he wanted them to feel something else instead. this kind of like… complete overhaul doesn’t come without work?
he probably spent hours and hours walking up and down in front of a mirror so that his gait came across in the right way; probably read out loud and forced his voice and his accent into something else, and then read it more, and more, and more, and just changed the whole thing.
LIKE.
severus snape as an adult is just… artifice built on top of artifice until it calcifies and turns to stone is my point
