I saw iron lung twice in three days and drew this in a feverish delirium so needless to say I enjoyed it a perfectly normal amount
Would you believe Ace is one of my favs? 😁
Oh, so Garp's just as corrupt as all the other marines. Good to know.
The Straw Hat Pirates love Luffy, but they do not like Garp
The Whitebeard Pirates love Ace, but they do not like Garp
The Revolutionary Army loves Sabo, but they do not like Garp
Okay but can we talk about how Garp telling Ace who his father was at an incredibly young age was one of the worst things he ever did to that kid for so many reasons.
1. This is just a massive intel risk. Ace went on to tell two other kids who are also intel risks and went around town asking adults remarkably specific questions about the pirate king's hypothetical child. Just having this information is dangerous for Ace.
2. Garp could have told him when he was older and less mentally fragile. It would have been so easy, just tell him about his mom and that she loved him and say he can't know about his father until he's an adult. Fist of Love him if Ace complains because this is Garp.
3. Garp could have never told him at all. Given the gravity of the situation if that information gets out I think that would be an entirely valid decision on his part. Ace could tell the wrong person and get himself killed.
4. Why did Dadan, a mountain bandit, know about Ace's parentage? There is no way that information was necessary in strong-arming her into raising him. It led her to saying something very damaging in his hearing (that he understood because he knew Roger was his dad) but more than that it's a miracle she didn't say anything to the wrong people. I say the 'wrong people' because she seems to have told other bandits working under her!
5. Seriously Garp what the fuck.
I was watching this video (which is great btw) and it got me thinking about how it reminds me of how the Straw Hats (mostly) operate
Particularly this section about game theory and what was found to be the most successful strategy in cases of repeated prisoner's dilemma (i.e. when it doesn't just play out once but multiple times)
(The classic example of prisoner's dilemma only plays out once and the selfish strategy always wins, but it doesn't take into account what happens on repeated attempts)
The Straw Hats are generally nice or at least neutral towards people by default, but will retaliate if people treat them or their friends unkindly. And then forgive them if they show genuine improvement. And well I think they're pretty clear about that lol
Consider Bellamy; Luffy was friendly at first, even refused to fight him, then beat him up after he stole Cricket's gold. Then once they meet again in Dressrosa and Bellamy shows some growth Luffy forgives him, but still ultimately fights him when he still gets in his way, making it clear that Bellamy has the freedom to do better and be accepted, but he has to act accordingly. And then Luffy forgives him again, and finally it sticks.
That's probably the best example, but not the only one
(Of course it's not that simple, there's a lot of things going on with the Bellamy stuff, because it's also about a clash in their ideologies etc., but that doesn't invalidate this analysis IMO)
Of course there are exceptions to this but overall this does seem to be Luffy's modus operandi. And the Straw Hats also mostly follow the same logic.
The Straw Hats (and pirates in general) do of course operate in an "alegal" system, because they're outlaws, and that's why this video is very relevant. "Alegal" as in they are not concerned with legality because they're already considered criminals regardless of what they do, which in a sense makes them free to act however they wish
And as Luffy himself said to Wapol; it doesn't matter to him who's a king or a god, who's important or noble or not, because he's a pirate. Social status and law are irrelevant to him because he's already made the choice to live outside the system, even if that makes him the enemy of the system
All the discussion on responsibility is also something that comes up with One Piece a lot. Luffy and the Straw Hats take that sort of thing very seriously. It's not a matter of rules but of taking responsibility for your actions, the actions of your crew, and the consequences of those actions
There's also the acknowledgement that you can never fully solve the problem of evil, you can only respond to it when you encounter it. (I mean as Andrewism says, ideally you would dismantle systems that enable evil people to have power over others, but I guess One Piece isn't quite that radical lol)
I just think it's interesting, because by showing the main characters adhering to this model, One Piece does establish it as one possible ideal to follow (maybe not the only one, but definitely the most appealing one if you like the Straw Hats)
Apparently I'm in the mood to bring back older posts, but seriously please watch that video if you're at all interested in what I said or in an anarchist reading of One Piece (or even better, in anarchism itself)
It's such a good summary of this topic and it's only 30 minutes (and very easy to just listen to, if you need to do other things at the same time). It addresses topics I keep running into in discussions about One Piece, like people talking about how the Navy is necessary because there are bad pirates out there (and clearly the Navy is the only solution to that, nobody look at all the local defence forces or militias that protect their own islands or the Revolutionary Army or even other pirates who sometimes protect territories they've claimed...)
(Those alternatives are a mixed bag, but they are legitimate options that have been shown to be at least as effective as the Navy, if not more so)
It's hard to summarise the video adequately, that's why I'm really recommending watching the whole thing.
Also I didn't mention the solidarity part in the original post so I wanna bring it up here: the Straw Hats are quick to form friendships and then equally quick to adopt their friends' causes as their own.
Of course the ideal would be to be in solidarity with all oppressed peoples globally, which the Straw Hats don't really do, but then again they aren't presented as the unquestioned ideal anyway, that's why Luffy tells Fishman Island to decide for themselves if they're friends or foes
the feeling that i'm losing them forever and without really entering their world i'm glad whenever i can share their laughter those funny little boys
what happened to the wonderful adventures? the places i had planned for us to go well, some of that we did, but most we didn't and why? i just don't know
sometimes i wish that i could freeze the picture and save it from the funny tricks of time
