i fear a lot of people are missing the point of laufey’s madwoman music video and it’s all because a pretty man is in it 😭 trust me, i get it. i’m a lesbian and even i think that hudson williams is the most gorgeous man i’ve ever seen! but all i’ve been seeing since the video has come out is people posting about how beautiful hudson is and how they couldn’t even pay attention because of him. guys. you are almost ironically proving the point of the song. let’s take a look at the second verse of the song. the lyrics go as, “I remind myself how he’d question everything ‘bout me/Call me stupid as a mindless joke, he hypnotized me as we spoke/Purely mythological, with the ugliest soul/You would think that he is holding me for ransom” she’s pretty much telling us as the listener that this guy is mean and not very caring and because of his terrible personality, people should be wondering how he even pulled her. then we get the next lyric as it goes into the chorus, “But there’s something so vexing ‘bout you” despite his douchebag attitude and being rude, she still thinks that there’s something there and it’s only because he’s hot! the thing that is vexing about him is his attractiveness. the song is about being stuck in a toxic relationship, which is also shown near the end of the music video when laufey tries leaving hudson behind, only to find that the road has broken completely off into a cliff and she can’t go any further. she’s stuck going back to the house and saying yes to his proposal, and her friends are even encouraging it, probably because they don’t actually know how much of an asshole he is, because they think he’s hot, which is shown specifically through lola tung’s character as we see her hide behind her magazine as hudson comes out of the water before sneaking a glimpse at the beginning of the video. this also ties into the title of the song. laufey feels like a ‘madwoman’ as the song progresses but i think she already feels like it in the beginning of the song, too. she may feel like a madwoman in the beginning because she lowkey hates the guy she’s dating but he’s hot so she decides it’s okay. then, when he proposes, she feels even more insane because why would he even do that? they have no chemistry and she gets turned off at every mean thing he says. then she returns to the house after driving away and we can see the descent into madness as her friends robotically usher her back into the house. the final shot, with hudson’s back turned towards us and laufey’s almost dejected silhouette in the doorway, makes it feel as if she’s upset that it came back to this and she can’t do much of anything to leave hudson. all in all, i guess what i’m trying to say is, four beautiful women have graced your screen and all you’re talking about is the man doing pushups on the diving board? like, why would a man be there?
