Vacations were rare for vigilantes. It was even more rare for more than two to go on one at a time. Lucky for you, Alfred had insisted that Bruce give you guys a break when you approached with the idea of a vacation. That’s how you, Jason, Donna, Koriand’r, Dick, Wally, and Roy got to be on this beach. You weren’t sure you’d ever see the sun again since your move to Gotham, but your skin was loving it. Roy had originally apologized for having to bring Lian but no one cared. You all loved the girl anyway and Roy didn’t have to worry about a babysitter.
You were currently suntanning, letting your body soak in the sun. Who knew when you’d see it again. Dick, Koriand’r, Roy, and Jason were playing volleyball, their voices loud and competitive. Jason had asked you to watch the match as a referee but you were barely paying attention, honestly. The sun was making you sleepy. Wally and Donna were making sandcastles with Lian, who was talking their ears off. She was probably about five years old now. You remembered when she was only a month old, barely a curl on her head. Now, she had a head full of hair, long hair at that. You knew Roy really had his work cut out for him. At some point, Lian ran her way over to the intense volleyball match, her squealing voice overpowering the arguing ones.
“Jay-Jay!” Lian shouted over and over again, trying to get Jason’s attention. He turned around at the sound of the voice, the other three turning their attention to each other to continue arguing. Jason smiled as Lian hugged onto his leg.
“What’s up?” Jason asked as he picked Lian up, holding her in one arm. Her little hand went to his hair, gently pulling at the strands.
“Will you go in the water with me?” She asked softly in that specific kid voice that told you they really wanted you to say yes. Jason nodded at her, moving them closer to the water. He dared a glance back at you. Your sunglasses were pushed up your nose, shielding him from identifying how you were feeling. And those stupid swim trunks. When you first stepped out of the house you were all staying at in black swim trunks with tiny Red Hood symbols dotted on them, everyone had hooted and hollered, joking about it. Jason had laughed too but he thought they were cute. Plus, he knew that even if you played it off as a joke, you weren’t actually joking. You might act nonchalant around their friends but he knew. Jason smiled when you waved at him from your lounger, tilting his head to the side as if to say hi back.
You watched Jason walk towards the water with Lian, the two of them in deep conversation. He was always great with kids. He’d told you before that he didn’t think he’d be a good dad but he always proved himself wrong. Not that you didn’t feel that way, either. Your upbringing wasn’t the best and whenever the subject of children came up, you couldn’t help but think about what kind of dad you’d be. You’d only been shown one way to parent and you came out the way you did. Maybe that’s what’d make you a good dad, Jason had told you once. You remember rolling your eyes at him and telling him the same applies to him. Both of you were too self deprecating to think any differently. Maybe the two of you would be good father’s one day, but that day certainly wasn’t soon. You were so deep in thought you didn’t notice Jason or Lian walking up to you.
“Attack!” Jason suddenly yelled. Him and Lian shook their wet hair out on you, Lian giggling uncontrollably. That definitely snapped you out of your thoughts. You put your hands out in a defensive position, a grin pulling at your lips. When they were done, you pushed your sunglasses up into your hair, squinting up at Jason and raising an eyebrow.
“Seriously?” You asked. He put his hands up, grinning back at you.
“Hey, it was Lian’s idea, not mine,” You knew he was lying but Lian couldn’t stop giggling to defend herself. You looked over at her and she squealed and started running away.
“Hey! Get back here!” You got up and ran after her, her laughing only getting louder. You caught up to her quickly, picking her up and tackling her to the ground. Lian shrieked and giggled into your chest as you hugged her to your body.
“You think it’s funny, huh?” You asked, beaming down at her. She shook her head, her giggles calming down.
Jason watched you two with a fond smile. You were so good with kids. It was his favorite thing when Roy asked you two to babysit Lian. He loved watching you care for her. You were just so gentle. Not that you weren’t in general, it was just different with kids. You treated them like they could break any moment, which was probably kind of true. Watching you take care of Lian just made him even more excited for when you two had a kid.
“Don’t hurt my kid, please!” Roy yelled out from the volleyball net, a hand above his eyes to shield the sun. Jason rolled his eyes. He was such a helicopter parent.
“Cool it, Harper,” Jason yelled back, jogging back to the volleyball net to continue their game from earlier. Roy smacked Jason’s arm when he came back in retaliation.
Getting Lian to bed that night was a hassle, even with seven adults. Donna had eventually convinced her to go to sleep by telling her she could have ice cream for breakfast (which definitely was not happening). Roy thanked her and managed to tuck himself and Lian into bed without much fuss. Everyone else went back to their shared rooms, except you and Jason. You stepped out of the sliding door and onto the giant deck that led down to the beach. There was a cool breeze, waves crashing against the shore. It was quiet. A rare moment. Jason stood next to you, bumping your shoulders together. You hummed at the touch.
“You okay?” Jason asked, tilting his head at you. You nodded.
“Yeah, fine,” You replied, letting out a sharp breath. Jason stared at you for a second, unconvinced, but let it go.
“You’re a good uncle to Lian,” You told him, finally looking at him. He rolled his eyes but you could see the smile pulling at his lips.
“Whatever,” Jason shrugged like it was nothing.“You are, too,” He added. It was your turn to roll your eyes. It seemed the two of you knew where this conversation was going. You crossed your arms over your chest, sweatpants and a shirt suddenly not warm enough for this breeze.
“I don’t really know if a kid is something I want,” You started, avoiding Jason’s eyes. “At least, not right now. It’s not something I ever thought about until we started dating,” You admitted, shifting your weight awkwardly. Jason stared at you, letting you speak.
“I don’t know. I don’t think anytime soon is right for us but… I like watching you with Lian,” You looked up at your boyfriend. Jason’s eyes were soft and loving. He always looked at you like he understood everything about you. It made you feel seen in a way no one else had ever made you feel.
“I like watching you with Lian, too,” Jason smiled, taking in your face. His smile eased your anxiety. You weren’t sure how he was going to react but you were glad it seemed positive. Jason put a hand on your waist and pulled you into his side, placing a kiss in your hair.
“I just want to make you happy,” Jason admitted quietly. You looked over at him, raising an eyebrow. “Whether you want a kid or not, as long as you’re happy,” He elaborated. You leaned your head on his shoulder, the two of you standing there for a moment. Just soaking each other in. A sudden bang sounded from inside, causing you two to jump and turn around. There was Wally, standing over a tub of ice cream, a spoon in his mouth and another in his hand. He smiled awkwardly at the two of you and pulled the spoon out of his mouth.
“Sorry… Dick got hungry,” He explained through the open door. Jason rolled his eyes.
“Just go, asshole,” Jason pointed towards the bedrooms and Wally sped off quickly. You laughed, grabbing Jason’s hand and tugging him inside.
“We should probably go to bed, anyway,” You told him, to which he grumbled in reply. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself as the two of you tucked into bed. Perhaps your self deprecating, ‘I’d be a bad dad’ bullshit would cancel out because you two would be doing it together.
