forever thinking of catra from the 2018 she-ra series. what if you were deeply in love with your best friend. what if you chose long ago to abandon your morals to stay by her side. what if, at the very first chance, she was faced with the same decision and chose her morals over you. what if your grief over that choice was so immense that it fueled five seasons of television and almost ended the world. what if, at the end of it all, the end of the very world she fought so hard to save, you asked her to stay and she finally, finally did

one reason why i love catradora is bc theyre Meant to be doomed and star-crossed in the way that every single force is trying to pull them apart and yet they still choose eachother - and thats what gives adora the strength to fight for a future She wants instead of an ordained destiny and ultimately saves the universe bc they Chose eachother. like hello.

and when i say every force i mean every force. shadow weaver, light hope telling adora she had to let go, the rebellion and the horde, even their own conflicting loyalties that drive them apart even down to the penultimate episode of s5... And they still choose eachother because they love eachother. theyre literally defying destiny to be with eachother.

she-ra is all about love and how powerful love is and adoras magic coming back from love... ugh a masterpiece actually.

thinking of how much i love and prefer season 5 she ra’s form and there’s a reason for that: it’s more reminiscent of adora herself. ofc i do love she ra’s form throughout season 1-4 bc it’s iconic… but this she ra form is from the power of love and friendship and courage. in season 1-4, adora felt detached from she ra and relied on she ra because she felt like SHE was not good enough and that nobody would want adora for adora. i think when it comes to this she ra form, she is still trying to find herself and she’s struggling because she feels she ra comes from the sword and she needs the sword but she ra comes from within. she’s not she ra because of the sword, she’s she ra because she just is her. she couldn’t find a sense of identity within the horde bc it was all what do they want? what am i supposed to do? she never thought about what she wanted. her first she ra form shows the struggle of identity i feel.

but when it comes to her in season 5, it comes from a moment of stubbornness due to her not wanting to give up because she LOVES her friends. she is just so full of love. her boots resemble glimmer, the heart on her chest is for bow, and her head piece represents catra’s. (considering there’s a moment where she takes it off and eventually loses it, it’s like catra gave her the head piece. she has her hair poof and her ponytail. (necessity btw) she’s more strong than ever.

and i think this is why catra blushed when she saw this form because it was more reminiscent of adora. catra didn’t like she ra at all. she wanted adora, not she ra. she ra was almost like a reminder that adora left her and is just so much more better than her than before. but catra warms up to she ra because she can SEE adora in her. AND JUST TO MENTION, this she ra saved catra and brought her back to life with just the power of love.

hc that catras favourite colour is actually blue - partly bc of adoras eyes and partly bc shes a cat and can actually see blue unlike other colours

i loooove the origin of a hero book where catra gives adora a piece of blue rubble that matches her eyes :((((

also hc that since the fright zone is all red and dark that adoras eyes being probably the only accessible blue thing in there calmed her down :(((((( i imagine seeing the blue sky after the war instead of the fright zones smoggy sky was so good for her

when she misses adora she can just look up at the blue sky :')

A Different Kind of Adventure

If this show meant something to you, then you know what to do. Whether it's streaming services or the end of a VHS production run, nothing lasts forever. How long it endures after that is up to you.

So, make copies, keep them fondly. Rewatch them with friends, rewatch them with your kids, if you happen to have them. And if you happen to be queer, there's probably going to be a day when you're the elder to some new kids on the block.

Maybe you'll watch it with them. And though they'll inevitably see it very differently, you'll tell the story of what it meant to you, and what it represented for all of us.
