I think something at the core of Catradora that often gets missed (but is important to me because of how much the ship rhymes with some of the best parts of my dating history) is just how playful they are with each other.

I fully believe that even when they learn to communicate effectively and have worked their shit out, these two just...have fun with each other. Do silly shit. Remember, this is pre-rebellion Adora! She's still in "gotta be Shadow Weaver's favorite or I'll literally get tortured and deserve it" mode and when she's not Doing That, she's enjoying banter with her gf!! Idk, I love them so much.

adora wanted something against her conditioning for the first time in her young life when she found a cute kitten in a box and begged shadow weaver relentlessly to keep her. it was a strong enough immediate attachment that shadow weaver knew she would have to allow it to keep the girl wrapped around her finger. a curious attraction offered just a glimpse of autonomy to choose her own found family within the confined walls of a ward that would be her entire world for nearly two decades, and she knew this new member would be a special companion she could never grow tired of.

catra got affirmation of security in the arms of the only person she was never invisible to, swearing that she'd always be her friend even on the difficult days when anyone else would have given up already, and at the significance of that her glowing eyes widened and she blushed. it was a cherished childhood memory hidden within the familiarity of darkness, clung onto like a safety net for years with a gravity like the moons locked into orbit around etheria. it still meant something worth remembering after all she had accomplished, even in isolation far away from home.

adora moved on from abandoning all she knew far more quickly than anyone else with an expected amount of sentimental attachments might ever, but she never stopped missing the single best source of joy from the life she left behind and even wrote letters that she kept secret and did not dare to deliver out on the battlefield, where she had greater priorities anyway. despite the struggle, she formed new allies and relationships while looking towards her hopes for the future, and was reluctantly willing to cut all contact with a broken promise forever once the last of its light was shut out, but found that it still shone bright among those who were there to support her going forward.

catra failed to see past the last chapter of the book and refused to write the next one, letting the loss of her other half consume her - even to the point of constantly pushing away the potential of a new flame - until her intense feelings got too big to fit in her room any longer. when the monster she was becoming finally revealed itself, it tore apart every last spot on the planet to hunt down the main catalyst to her unraveling without end. she could not live with this pain anymore, so as it literally destroyed her, she tried her damn best to make sure none of it was able to be created by any sentient being again. if she couldn't have back the love that she survived on for this long, no one else could either.

all this to say: adora fell first, catra fell harder. i can't see it any other way. (though of course, i should note it's probably much more equal post-canon.)
