Men overestimate intelligence in science class, study shows.
A new study found that men in STEM subject areas overestimate their own intelligence and credentials, underestimate the abilities of female colleagues, and that as a result, women themselves doubt their abilities — even when hard evidence such as grades say otherwise.
By any definition, Gwen Pearson is pretty smart. She’s got a Ph.D in entomology and she is now a science writer and education coordinator.
But she remembers how often she was told she wasn’t good enough, simply because she was female.
“As a graduate student, a fellow male student said, to my face, that he had no idea how I was admitted to the program because I clearly wasn’t smart enough to be there,” Pearson recalls.
Women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers have countless similar stories.

It’s really clean, professional, and takes you through several projects using ruby. I’m going to resume it tonight and am already hyped.

It’s the final episode of Computer Science! Carrie Anne discusses what might be coming up in the future of computing.
Me: Learning to code is great. It’s like learning this new beautiful language. I look at a successful program I wrote and I feel like I’m steps away from becoming the smart hacker friend in a YA novel.
Also me: *aggressively mashes keyboard while crying in confusion because I missed one thing and now I don’t know what the fuck is going on or why I even signed up to learn this*
APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women
APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women
Application Deadline: February 15
The American Physical Society and IBM co-sponsor a research internship program for undergraduate women. The goal is to encourage women students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering.
The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY), and give the opportunity to work closely with an IBM mentor. The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab, and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems. Research areas of the internship are individually chosen so as to optimize the match between the skills and interests of the student, and the ongoing research programs of the laboratory. Information about the sites and their research may be found at: IBM Research Almaden Research Center Watson Research Center Austin Research Laboratory
The starting and ending dates are chosen so as not to conflict with the student’s school schedule. Assistance in finding and renting housing will be provided.
Summer applications are due February 15. Selection notifications are sent out in early April. Important Details on the Application Process and Internship
Eligibility
Must be female with sophomore or junior standing at a U.S. college or university at the time of application
Must be majoring in chemistry, physics, materials science or engineering, computer science or engineering, chemical, electrical, mechanical engineering, or biology, if it has an emphasis on one of the other areas listed
Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
No citizenship restriction.
Selection Procedure
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee at IBM/Almaden and selected based on their commitment to and interest in their major field of study.
Application Procedure
The application process consists of an online application, which is submitted through an IBM server; two letters of recommendation, which are to be emailed directly from the recommenders to the internship chair; and an official transcript, which, if possible, is emailed to the internship chair from the registrar’s officer, or if that is not possible is submitted to IBM via postal mail. @quantumheels I don’t know if you’d benefit, but this obviously made me think of you :)
girls in STEM fields, reblog if you agree
My life :(
Literally do your work as soon as you know it exists. If you get homework, do it during your free or when you get home or on the train if you really want to, on the day you get it. Just got set an assignment? Get the draft done that weekend. It doesn’t have to be amazing and absolutely ready to send in, it just needs to exist. Just got sent an email? Reply when you see it. If you’re not sure how to response to it, write Dear (), leave a gap and then write Regards () and keep that in your drafts. Set a reminder on your computer or write the reminder on a sticky note that you’ve got that sitting in your drafts and you need to send it off in the next 24 hours. Need to clean your room? Don’t spend time thinking or planning how you’re going to clean it or how you’re going to change up the space in the process, just pick stuff up and put it where it should be until everything’s in order. Done. Seriously dude, when a task arises as an issue, tackle it as soon as you realise it exists. Remember, it doesn’t need to be amazing it just needs to be done. So, when the due date of the task creeps closer, you can go back, work with what you have and make it the quality you want it to be.
