STEM Statistics to put the Gender Gap into Perspective
ā women make up roughly 17 percent of the physics workforce, but at the current rate of women working and studying physics, it would take 258 years to achieve gender balance.
ā good news though! more women are graduating with degrees in STEM. for a rough estimate, the number grew from just over 140,000 in 2009 to over 200,000 in 2016.
ā the myth of the "math brain" is a destroyer of confidence in girls. most girls lose confidence in math in third grade, while boys are more likely to feel they are strong in math.
ā in 2019, about one-third of non-binary and transgender scientists reported discrimination for their sex or gender identity. about one-fifth of transgender scientists considered leaving their job.
ā among STEM company CEOs, only 3 percent are women.
ā 19 of the 616 nobel prizes awarded between 1901 and 2019 in physics, science, medicine and physiology were awarded to women.

(born 1946) Nuclear physicist
Shirley Ann Jackson is a nuclear physicist and President of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. She was the first African-American woman to earn a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She served as Chair of the Presidentās Intelligence Advisory Board during the final two years of Barack Obamaās tenure as President.

Astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is only the second woman to be awarded the Copley Medal.
A leading astrophysicist from Northern Ireland has been awarded the world's oldest scientific prize for her work on the discovery of pulsars.
Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is only the second woman to be awarded the Royal Society's highest prize, the Copley Medal.
The medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in scientific research.
In 1967, when she was a 24-year-old student, she was part of a team that discovered the new type of star.
Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars, so named because they appear to pulsate when viewed from Earth.
At the time she was overlooked for a Nobel prize in favour of her male collaborators, although she has argued the prize was awarded appropriately at the time due to her student status.

Research by Cech and Waidzunas found that scientists belonging to the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to experience harassment in the workplace and be overlooked for opportunities, limiting their career progression. Inequalities within STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) fields based on gender and ethnicity are more high profile, and it is believed that these inequalities exist due to underrepresentation of women and people belonging to ethnic minorities discouraging engagement with STEM. This is a seemingly vicious cycle which likely explains the poor visibility of LGBTQ+ people in science.
LIVE with Scientists is committed to ensuring that science is accessible and inclusive. In the coming months, we aim to build upon the diversity of our amazing contributors and showcase the real stories and research of scientists who are often under-represented. To do this, we are collaborating with Pride in STEM: a charity established in 2016 which aims to increase the visibility of queer scientists and raise awareness of the issues that LGBTQ+ people face in STEM. Pride in STEM established LGBTQ+ STEM Day (November 18) which is celebrated globally, and run āOut Thinkersā events which give LGBTQ+ scientists a safe and accepting space to talk about their research.
LIVE with Scientists wants to harness the spirit of āOut Thinkersā and invite LGBTQ+ scientists to share their research. We would also love to highlight the experiences of LGBTQ+ people in science and academia, too.

Getting dirty, asking questions, being unapologetically enthusiastic about things, going overboard on projects. These are a few of my favorite things.
This is so heartbreaking, but so true.Ā
And itās even more heartbreaking when you see the transition and how performative it is.
I was a camp counselor at a science/nature camp when I was 16, for a bunch of 10 and 11 yr old girls. And one day while we were waiting around for the naturalist to come get us to go on the dayās hike, the boys cabin we were grouped with was exploring the area and overturned a log and found a salamander. One of the boys picked it up and they brought it over.
My girls all went āewww, gross, keep it away!ā
ā¦right up until I said āwhoa, cool, can I see it?ā
This boy handed me the salamander and all of a sudden my girls were clustering around. They wanted to hold it. They were asking questions about it. They had stories of other times theyād seen a lizard or caught a frog or something. A couple of them went with some of the boys to look under another log and see if they could find another one.
All they had needed was permission to be curious, to show interest instead of disgust. And as soon as someone they were looking to for cues on āhow to be a girlā showed interest, as soon as they didnāt feel like they had to perform socially-acceptable girliness and pretend to be grossed out in order to gain adult approval, all that natural curiosity and the fascination most kids have for the natural world just came bubbling right up.

Fall 2019, during my first semester of research, the dept. lab manager took this picture of an eager Sara. Jack made sure to stop me in the halls often over the years to ask how things were going and tell me he was āprouder of me than usual.ā
When I struggled to balance all of my work, and I didn't feel like I was fit for research, I always knew I had a āfriend and colleagueā in my corner who believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself.
The fact that I stuck with research and inevitably fell in love with it, failures and all, is largely thanks to Jackās unwavering faith in my ability to overcome any obstacle.
Thank the people in your corner and strive to be a person that passionately believes in other people

I live in the city Elon Musk built his SpaceX spaceport. Brownsville, Texas. It is a border town with majority of the population Mexican and Latino. With a significant amount of the population immigrants who crossed the border over for a chance at a better life. And as a Mexican and local, I can tell you things here are much worse than it seems.
The debris of his spaceships have landed on land that is considered a wildlife reserve for endangered-species.
Its home to an extremely rare beetle (the Boca Chica Flea Beetle.) known for its golden brown hue. This beetle is classed as a āSpecies of Greatest Conservation Needā.
And a little known ant species that hasnāt even been given a scientific name yet! (Its only been found in one other place in texas and Nicaragua.)
Oh but thatās not the end of it!
Heās been buying off local politicians and judges, bribing them with free teslas and campaign donations. Thatās how heās managed to get away with the mess heās caused so far.
But, he fucked up. Because the locals here were furious with how heās treating the environment and the news stations caught wind of it. And to save face, donated 30 million to the city.
Heās also been buying off properties here and after his tweets asking people to move here its obvious prices are going to skyrocket(heāll make lots of money). But this in turn with push locals out and gentrify everything. And because weāre all Latino and non-white, and most immigrants no one will care!
All of this for the sake of āinterplanetary explorationā and living in other planets!
I donāt want other planets!
This isnāt āan insignificant piece of landā! This is my home!
