hello hello! i’ve been on this site for a couple years now and i just realized that i haven’t really made The Pinned Intro Post that a lot of ppl love to do on here, so i thought it was about time i actually do that. this is gonna be a bit of a long one!

i go by a lot of different names, but a lot of people usually refer to me by my username, so any variations like cat, fool etc is cool.

i also hyperfixate on different things every couple of months so don’t expect consistency.

interests

I’m an artist, art is my main thing, it’s what i live for. i also really enjoy storytelling! i’m still new to that kind of thing, but it’s an ever growing passion of mine to analyze media and and try to understand the thought process behind each story. it’s very fun to slowly begin to recognize the patterns and build something of your own using them.

i’m entirely self taught on the storytelling end so ANY critique is highly highly appreciated.

I didn’t realize the tagline of Obsession is “be careful who you wish for” and I LOVE that double meaning omg. You might interpret it as Bear wishing for the WRONG person before you watch the movie. But really it’s about autonomy: don’t make a wish in the stead of someone else, because YOU should not be the one who determines that person’s life. Bear made a wish for (for= in her stead and to have) Nikki, and she suffered the consequences, from no choice or fault of her own. Be careful who you wish for.

on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)

if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made

I've always loved Makio and Kasamachi's relationship. She prefers solitude too much and is afraid to hurt Kasamachi again because, even with Asa around, she still can't adjust to having people in her space.

Kasamachi offering a relationship that's pretty much a dissection of "dating" (being friends, leaning on each other, hanging out, venting, kissing, sexual desires) without the label that puts pressure and responsibility on Makio is the best option. It's the same way Makio doesn't want to be Asa's "parent" but still acting in a way a mother would. It is why she struggles with her "sister", sister only in name but not in action.

This type of relationship with him is probably what is a "normal" romantic connection to Makio and he understands her and loves her so much that he's willing to adjust to her world instead of getting her to adjust to his like other people demand from her. I love them so much.

A university disregarding female applicants that will affect you as a woman even if you're not applying to that university or even any college, just the fact that your sex is being discriminated in the society you live in, because immediately after that scene two boys don't even bother to apologize after bumping into Asa. Trivial things you say out of a whim might hurt someone; Asa indulging in light gossip about boyfriends to Emiri without really listening to what she says, words that she'll forget but brings anxiety to her friend.

Asa thinking that things don't apply to her if she's not interested mirrors how her father lived as a void thinking his opinions and his words doesn't affect his child at all. Her reaction to the word "void" is far stronger than other else she heard from Makio. Her fear of "standing out" encourages her to essentially become her father, a wallflower, a follower, a void, a child who can't make her own decisions despite her personality being the complete opposite— eating away her feelings when she's full of it. Before she knew it, she turned into her mother.

It's why she can't look away at Morimoto's rage even if it puts her in a bad spotlight, at Tamashiro's attempt to have friends even if she stands out, at Makio who lives her life outside the norm. Even if she tries to believe certain experiences are irrelevant to her, everything influences her. I love how they're portraying her coming of age, reflection and sincere consideration of others and one's self are what makes a person grow into their own.

One of the striking things about Ikoku Nikki is how fundamentally different it is from other single-parent shows like Usagi Drop or Kakushigoto. Those shows played into the (very real) pro-childbearing propaganda, showing the immediate rewards of child-rearing while also glossing over the drawbacks. Ikoku Nikki flips that trend, at least four episodes in.

What’s become clear is that Makio and Asa are not a good pair. Makio gets easily overstimulated and Asa needs regular attention. Asa very clearly needs therapy but her support system is failing her. And while Makio probably doesn’t want a romantic partner right now, having a second income and pair of hands would come in really handy right now.

Basically, Makio is just not a good caregiver at this point in the story. And that makes sense! She’s never raised a child, much less a teenage one, and it appears like something she never had any intention of doing in the first place. Why would she be good at this??

But her understanding that she needs to keep trying makes her endearing. Asa doesn’t motivate her guardian instincts because she’s cute or talented or extraordinary in any way, but because she’s a child who needs a parent, and dammit, that’s reason enough. It’s admirable that a show like this is basically saying, “this is often thankless work that you may hate, but do it anyway because it’s the right thing” and not some weird right-wing, breeder bullshit. Being a parent is hard, but it’s the only way these kids survive.

Good show. Sometimes a hard show, but well worth the time.
