pt 2
(❗Last hour entry❗& more of my personal wish, though)
and YES, this is about BRAUN.
Braun will appear last in Part 3 among the recurring characters.
Thought about this fortnight ago, and since I recently saw a tweet with the same sentiment (so glad I'm not the only one thinking!), I would like to share why, with of course, reasons.
There are three reasons this could happen.
1) (Chapter 335 Spoiler, but I don't think this warning is necessary, since you've already finished the entire Part 2😆)
Lee Jaheon answered, "It is an 'inevitable premise' for Soleum's wish to be granted", when he was asked why Braun was completely mute for 613 loops(+more), who was with Soleum the whole time. "Braun needs to be absent for Soleum to truly go back to his home."
Since the Wish Ticket (the real one, allegedly) grants one's true and deepest wish, the same logic seems to apply here. Even if Braun can still watch and hear him from afar, Soleum cannot perceive him at all.
The first few chapters in Part 3 are probably gonna be Soleum living in his OG world, a world without ghost stories, so Braun would be absent for a while.
2) Before Braun said farewell to Soleum in chapter 371, he said this.
[However, whether they would come back to the studio and tell their thrilling tale or not depends on the decision of the guest themselves.]
(Chapter 371, Ghost Story Gotta Work)
This can imply two things: 1. Soleum is definitely coming back to the DER world (THAT TV-HEADED FORESHADOWING DEVICE WOULD NEVER SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT IF IT'S NOT PLOT-RELEVANT & of course, everyone thinks Soleum will come back) & 2. If he doesn't willingly come back to the DER world, he wouldn't show himself. Braun is showing respect for Soleum's volition to come back to the DER world. He respects Soleum's decision to go back home.
If Soleum came back to the DER world unwillingly, I think Braun would not engage with or talk to him, regardless of how much he wants to.
Only when Soleum voluntarily wants to come back will Braun return and reunite in a proper and dramatic (as usual) way.
(Also, he didn't talk to Soleum, even if he could, for like 2 weeks, JUST for the dramatic reunion & entrance. You think this guy wouldn't dare to do that again? Also, after the 4 months of hiatus, it is a PERFECT OPPORTUNITY to tantalize the readers.)
3) Something meta, but this is BDS-nim we're talking about. Due to Braun's good-friend contract, people suspect that Braun may talk to Soleum in the OG world. But this is too predictable. BDS-nim might be fully aware of this.
BDS-NIM has a history of backstabbing us readers MULTIPLE TIMES with horrifying twists (like chapter 208, the 613 time loop and CHAPTER 208!) & I think the time for Braun's reappearance would be one of the twists.
This may be proven as a falsehood about one and a half hours later, but I'm still having hopes for it.
the thing about braun is that in the original Dark Exploration records he was a heartless character who killed people on his tv show purely for entertainment, but kim soleum fixed him by forging a genuine connection with him and becoming close friends, ultimately getting through to him with the power of love
and the thing about baek saheon in the original Dark Exploration records he was a heartless character who sacrificed his coworkers just to rise in rank, but kim soleum fixed him by putting him through sheer psychological torment. he cant plan on hurting people when hes too busy worrying about getting killed in his sleep because you spammed his messages with ominous warnings to watch out for serial killers
So I was reading Ch337 in Sekwang with Student Jaekwan and its so interesting to see the difference between Soleum back in Ch30 smth vs here. And see how much hes changed
Its the situation at the high school where a crowd suddenly appears and he tells Jaekwan to run away while he uses himself as a distraction. Which is.. a really big change! For one his Ch30 self would've been making a bunch of complaints in his head. He would've been screaming at the body horror, would've been crying about having to be the sacrifice. Actually he probably would've just frozen up. Meanwhile Ch330 Soleum is calm collected and only has a mild thought of "I dont want to do this but theres no choice." He doesnt even mention its scary. Just seems creeped out.
But its also interesting to see how hes gotten worse in some regards. Because Ch30 Soleum probably would've not gone with this plan at all. Ch30 Soleum had a bunch of items and resources prepared in case smth like this happened. He would've asked Braun to do lights out, he would've used an item he had, maybe he'd even use the people and resources around him to fix it. And he would DEFINITELY scour the wiki in his mind to come up with a solution.
Meanwhile Ch330 Soleum does NONE of this 💀. He has no backup, no plan, no items, no resources, he's litterally just riding in on as a distraction with nothing but a hope and a dream. He hasnt even mentioned the wiki once in a HOT second. Hes not even considering Braun as an option.
Name yourself, your farm, and your favourite thing something that will make you smile when it's said back to you
On mobile, to move, tap where you want to go; the tutorial says to drag your finger on the screen, but this doesn't work well, just tap where you want to go
Cut wood and build a chest before you do anything else - you are quickly going to run out of inventory space
Buy all the strawberries you can at the Egg Festival - avoid big expenditures before then to save up, feed them with Speedgrow fertiliser*
Except the 2,000 bag upgrade - get that as soon as you can; fishing is a quick way to make money (but difficult as a noob)**
Fences are a waste of time and money - your animals won't leave your farm and weeds are easier to scythe than fences are to replace
You can use bee hives, preserve pots, furnaces etc as fences as you get richer, and they won't decay
When salmonberries and blackberries are in season, treat them like pokemon! You gotta catch them all! You will level in foraging so much more quickly
You always need more wood (until you don't, but that's pretty far into the game)
If you're trying to say hi to everyone, Sebastian, Sam, Elliot, and Hayley are the most tricky - Sebastian will leave the basement at around 7pm, loiter in his house; Sam works in the Jojo Mart or Museum and likes to hang out by the river on the town map; Hayley gets up late and goes to bed early, catch her taking photos in the forest, hanging out on the beach or near the playground, talking to Alex in the summer by the ice cream stand, or in her kitchen around 6pm; Elliot leaves his house at noon to chill on the beach for an hour (you can find him a few other places, but not as easily, and it you get to the beach before noon on the second day you can pounce on him after you talk to Willy)
Make friends with Demetrius and he will devote a cave on your land to a science experiment; choose the fruit bats - you don't have to fight them and it will have much more hard-to-get fruit than exotic mushrooms
don't upgrade your watering can the first year, you get special moves when you upgrade, but even basic watering of a single spot takes longer. It's a lot quicker just to water each spot individually with the starter can
In summer, don't upgrade your axe until after the green rain; you don't want to be without an axe when there are giant fiddleferns to cut down
Make friends with Shane; when he likes you enough he will give you the recipe for jalapeño poppers, which make you go faster
Kill lots of bugs early on to get a really good sword from Gill in the Adventurer's guild, it will make life much easier
Kill lots of dust sprites until one drops a coffee bean. Coffee plants grow in spring and summer and you can brew coffee and espresso to make you go faster
When you have the house upgrade and can cook, buy the espresso recipe from Gus in the pub; it's worth it
This is not an exhaustive list, but these are the most helpful tips I have to optimise your experience starting out. I am restraining myself from advice on completing the Community Centre in a single year (I have lots);I had more fun before I started trying to do that, so that's advice for another day.
*if you do the spring foraging bundle and spring crops bundle in the community centre, you get 20 spreedgrow as a reward, so if you plant parsnips, beans, cauliflower, and potato on the first day, you can get this reward the day after you get the strawberry seeds. Speedgrow is better than basic fertiliser as a moneymaker, in this case, but don't spend money buying fertiliser. If you have more than 20 strawberry seeds, use basic fertiliser on the remainder (it is cheap to make from sap, which you will have plenty of if you've been chopping wood). Note that once you put down basic fertiliser you cannot user speedgrow on the same spot, so if you plant the night you get back from the festival, leave 20 unfertilised! The most strawberry plants I have got so far is 60.
**I found the tutorial advice on how to fish confusing, so here's Rhube's advice: you want to keep your fish level with the green bar. Tapping makes the fish move up. It's a good idea to tap rapidly to keep the fish in place when the green bar isn't moving; the fish has inertia and will take longer to get going if you stop. Some fish are MUCH harder to catch than others. If it seems impossible, let that fish go and try another. You can buy a training rod that will only catch easier fish. Trout Soup is a huge help early on, worth the 250g. Catching fish gets much, much easier as you level. Don't even bother trying to catch catfish the first two rainy days; you are extremely unlikely to succeed until you level more.
We'll probably never get any confirmation of this but I'm pretty sure Braun was at least inspired from Nyarlathotep if he isn't actually the Outer God himself. Hear me out on this lol.
I discussed this a couple of times with some of my mutuals when I thought of it but I feel like I should probably at least put it all into coherent sentences.
Right of the bat in the novel when we're introduced to Braun, we're told that he's merely a D-Grade Darkness but as it soon becomes clearly evident, that is not even nearly the case at all. While the Tuesday Night Talk Show may have been D-Grade due to its low lethality nature, we see that such is not the case for its Host.
Despite the Smiley Stickers doused in the enhancement potion, Braun is fully aware of Soleum trying to trick him into delaying a bit in order for their survival and he's not even mad about it, he finds Soleum all the more fascinating for it. Which, of course, we learn the reason for afterwards... cough 208 cough but that's not it.
During his first invitation into the Good Friend rabbit plushie, we hear a massive roar of titles and Soleum gets shit scared before it all shuts up so we can finally talk with our favorite show host. I'll just put the titles announced below:
"...the owner of a million masks, the lord of chaos, the pinnacle of madness, the dreamer of pleasure and play, the instigator of war, the father of science, the lowly quadruped, the desire of the one who dreams, the monarch of the stars, the abyss of illusion, the mouth of wisdom, the roar of impulse, the dark side of the moon..."
Sound familiar? This was the moment I first actually thought of this theory, once I actually processed all these titles. Of course, some of these are obvious signs of Braun being an Outer God/Eldritch Horror but what about some of the other weird ones? Why is an entertainer being called "the father of science"???
It's because he isn't an entertainer. 'Braun' is merely a disguise.
But entertainment and allure is definitely one of his aspects.
It'll make sense in a moment.
Because if you now take a quick trip to Lovecraft and the cosmic horror town and look at some of Nyarlathotep's innumerable titles, you'll find these:
Crawling Chaos
God of a Thousand Forms
Stalker Among The Stars
Black Pharaoh
Faceless God
Messenger & Soul Of The Outer Gods
Just read it over a couple times and you're bound to see the obvious similarities between the titles of the two characters. As for the last title of Nyarlathotep, he's Azathoth's servant/messenger/lieutenant.
Now for the father of science part, just take a look at this:
"I had never heard the name NYARLATHOTEP before, but seemed to understand the allusion. Nyarlathotep was a kind of itinerant showman or lecturer who held forth in public halls and aroused widespread fear and discussion with his exhibitions. These exhibitions consisted of two parts—first, a horrible—possibly prophetic—cinema reel; and later some extraordinary experiments with scientific and electrical apparatus."
"...But Loveman's dream letter decided me.... As I left the house I saw throngs of men plodding through the night, all whispering affrightedly and bound in one direction. I fell in with them, afraid yet eager to see and hear the great, the obscure, the unutterable Nyarlathotep."
Pretty on the nose right? He's an expression of allure and what is more alluring to thousands if not entertainment? Everyone loves it. Moreover, he's maddening convincing, a true showman despite the terror he invokes from people.
A couple of things to be noted about Nyarlathotep is that he's the ONLY Outer God who's capable of interacting normally with people. He's not trapped anywhere either, he's free. You could meet him at a cafe and exchange a smile and nod and get away with it. At the same time however, he could destroy just about everything with his will. The best analogy I can find for this is a kid at an anthill with some sugar and a magnifying glass.
Another thing I noticed was Braun's disdain towards the 'producers' of his show. The first time in the novel he shows open hostility in his face is when he's talking about the execs who 'cancelled' his show, saying that they "knew nothing" about show business and what they're doing.
And after Part 2 I can be sure about one thing, he was very clearly talking about Ireum-nim. He does a couple of similar fourth wall breaks later too.
To put it in terms, Nyarlathotep's the servant of Azathoth, his father. However, he despises Azathoth going so far as to give him the title of "The Blind Idiot God." And that's because Azathoth is literally that, a dumbass to him. As per later renditions, all of existence including Nyarlathotep himself exists within Azathoth's dream and to wake Azathoth would mean the ceasing of everything. But Azathoth himself does not interact nor know anything and yet all is at his whim.
I'd be frustrated as fuck too. Braun's this immensely powerful guy but he's not exactly at the top, he's subject to the whims of incompetent superiors (the writers; Ireum-nim) that he cannot affect in any significant way and so he does the most he can do with what he has.
That's where 'Braun' comes in imo, much like what one of his titles say, the entire persona of Braun is merely one of the millions of masks he wears, one of his thousand forms he takes up to achieve whatever unknown objective he has.
Or more likely, just another whim he has out of mere curiosity. Much like a kid at an anthill, he doesn't really have any reason to burn up the ants or destroy an anthill, he just does it because it's fascinating.
