âI donât understand gothicâ
The Shape of Water was an extremely different kind of movie. Especially, the horror aspect of the film. The movie is considered a horror film but it didnât feel like a normal horror film. It didnât have as many jump scares or extremely loud music. Plus the storyline didnât have the monster character come across as evil to the viewers. So viewer werenât scared of the monster. Instead they were scared of an evil/sexist/racist businessman. The movie definitely has its gory gross moments. Like at the end with Strickland shooting everyone up. In the storyline I obviously saw its resemblance to the Beauty and the Beast stories. In both Disneyâs version of Beauty and the Beast and The Shape of Water the character beauty ends up helping to save the beast. Instead in Disneyâs movies sheâs in un-aware that she is going to end up helping to save the Beast. While, in The Shape of Water she goes on a mission to save the Beast, which I found to be an interesting twist. The acting among the main characters was done very well. I bet learning the lines for Eliza was very easy. Also, they made having a mute character very easy to watch because of the non verbal acting and the placement of the others characters lines was so good. I thought the movie was also shot really well. Because the shots where done very realistic. Like if the lighting was more orange toned in a room they left it alone, because thatâs how it would have looked if the viewers were in the room.
Shape of Water Tumblog Post
Shape of Water was definitely an interesting movie. Iâm honestly still unsure of how I feel about it.
First off, Iâm not sure what to make of the creature. I feel like it was super weird that she would fall in love with this amphibian-like man. To me, it felt a little different than Beauty and The Beast. I think itâs partially because the Beast in Beauty and The Beast wears clothing and talks English. It makes The Beast much more humanoid and more relatable. If the Beast only communicated with animal sounds and didnât wear clothing, I feel like it would feel similar to Shape of Water. The creature in Shape of Water does not speak english and does not wear clothing which makes it feel like a completely different species.
This being said, I like how Eliza explains her feelings for the creature. They relate because they both can not talk and communicate the same way. She feels like no one but this creature understands her.
Going on a different topic, some of the symbolism within the movie was pretty cool. One that comes to mind is the symbolism of the water on the window pane. There are two droplets of water that are going across the window, but then they eventually come together to be as one larger droplet. This symbolized Eliza and the creature coming together. Another one is Elizaâs scars on her neck. The scars look like gills and symbolizes that she is similar to the amphibian man. I thought that the movie was filmed very well and the plot was interesting throughout.
I was not a huge fan of the ending because it almost felt too convenient that she was just magically able to breathe underwater. However I feel like it was imperative that they ended up together in the end, so I guess it was fine.
Overall, I was happily surprised with this movie, despite being uncomfortable in some scenes haha.

Creature From The Black Lagoon Tumblog Post
Creature From The Black Lagoon was a great monster movie! I really got invested in the movie towards the end. Along with the entertaining plot of the movie, the role of Kay, the woman character, was very interesting.
Kay is an intelligent woman character who goes on the expedition with the group of men to find the fossils of the creature. She is the only woman on this expedition. This alludes to the fact that not many women have this opportunity. On the expedition, Kay voices her expertise in the biology of fish a few times. This shows that she is intelligent and actually useful to the team, however I feel like the movie goes back on the whole âempower womenâ idea many times in the movie. One example of this is that she has a romantic relationship with one of the crew members. This makes it appear as if this is the only reason she is on the trip. In addition to this, when they first discover the tent that was attacked, she is ordered to stay back while the men go to investigate the scene. Furthermore, she is seen cowering in fear of the monster many times and even gets taken by the monster at the end and has to be saved by the men. All of these things contradict the âempower womenâ idea that they appeared to be going for.
Overall the movie was really good, but I feel like it could have been stronger if they had made Kay more of a strong and independent character.

âAn American Werewolf in Londonâ Tumblog Post
âAn American Werewolf in Londonâ was actually a pretty good movie. Personally, I am usually not a fan of older movies with unrealistic special effects, but I feel like they did a good job with this movie. I have some criticism and some things that I feel like they did well in the movie. The first piece of criticism I have has to do with the guy who died in the beginning. He is stuck in some limbo where he couldnât really âdieâ until the curse was broken. This was really weird to me, but I understand that they needed to have some way of showing the main characterâs sanity deteriorating, but I feel like the scary dreams would have sufficed. In addition to this, I feel like the relationship development between the two main characters was weak. It seemed very rushed and not well thought out. All of the sudden a nurse lets a recently discharged mentally ill patient into her home⌠This should have been built up more before he started to stay at her home. Also, the main character was saying some very crazy things to the nurse, but she continued to fall in love with him regardless. This seemed a little far-fetched to me, but for plot reasons, I guess it is okay.
In contrast to these criticisms there were some good things in the movie! The transformation into a werewolf was particularly good considering how old this movie was. The random monsters in the dreams looked very fake, but it went along with the feel of the movie, so it was fine. Another great thing about this movie is the consistency with the werewolf lore. One thing that stood out to me was that after being killed, the werewolves turned back into humans. When the beast is killed in this movie, an innocent man is left there laying in blood. This leaves the viewer feeling sympathy for the main character even though they killed many people.
Overall, this movie was pretty good and I would watch it again!

Me: Can I at least have the full werewolf transformation?
