call it a hot take from a jaded fandom old, but I genuinely believe we need to bring back fandom-author secularism. the current lack of it is harmful to good storytelling. a piece of media must be judged by what is and what was put on the screen, not by the result of the effort the audience has to put in to patch up a broken narrative contract. somewhere along the line, we developed this bizzare expectation that the audience has to value a creator's (perceived) intent over the execution, as if a showrunner tweeting 'but it's poignant!' makes it true regardless of the actual content written and produced. a creator's social media feed is not an appendix to the script. I don't and I should have to care about what was said in interviews, at conventions, in tweets, etc. tell me the story, tell me what you want to tell me in the story and our relationship has fulfilled it's purpose.

to me, it's a fundamental rule of craftsmanship: if I am forced to do the heavy lifting in my own mind just to make the story work, the text has failed to earn it's keep. I can cherish a broken story , but it remains objectively broken nonetheless

this is about the good omens finale, yes, but also about many other things.

thinking about lestats speech on the balcony in season 1 episode 7, so heres my little ramble about it.

the way he speaks about the lives of those around him, and how he'll miss all the life and death he has witnessed/experienced in new orleans reads to me as one final act of confession towards louis. it's almost his way of begging. begging louis not to allow claudia to follow through with her plan, begging louis to run away with him and fall in love with him (completely, flaws and all), forgive him, tell him 'i love you'.

thinking then, about how when louis finds out antionette is still alive he admits that he knew lestat would have killed her in an instance if he knew louis would love him whole. all louis had to do was say 'i love you' and mean it.

following on from that i then think about that one quote from sam reid, how lestat, like anyone, just wants to be loved. he wants to be loved and understood completely. and he wants to live a life of love.

back to his speech on the balcony, it encapsulates all of that, it's lestats moment of putting everything on the table, asking louis to let him live and to let him live as himself loved by louis.

Hands as a recurring theme across the season. All the hands that have touched Lestat without his consent; her mother's; Magnus'; people's hands in the audience wanting to grab a piece of him to consume him; the cold dead hands of the failures who looked like him, reaching out to him in his nightmares; Nicki's hands that once touched him with love and tenderness as the ultimate reminder of all the blood and horror.

And yet he still wants to be touched, needs to be touched
