“It’s worse.” It didn’t look that bad. Nate’s hair always looked nice, unfortunately. Even after 4 consecutive hours of clubbing. “What are you doing here? Do you need money or something?”

As soon as Nate had heard about this party, he knew that’s where they’d be. It was summer, it was the Hunter’s beach house… Where else would anyone be? It hadn’t quite dawned on Nate yet how exactly he was supposed to explain himself. To explain why he’d left, where he’d been, why he was back. Actually, if he thought about for any decent amount of time, he’d turn right back around again. No one had ever accused Nate of, y’know, thinking though.

“Hey… Have you seen Serena?”

“I fucking hate this place. Why do you look homeless?”

“It’s funny that you think you can tell me what to do.” At once relieved and incredibly annoyed to see him, Blair leveled an unimpressed look in his direction. She resisted the temptation to glance back at her phone and instead busied herself with picking out a chocolate. At least he was smart enough not to come empty-handed. “But I accept your bribery. I wouldn’t mention him when you look so pathetic anyway.” Was Chuck walking around letting everyone see him like this? It’s not like she didn’t understand — she was uniquely qualified, in fact. But maybe it was a sore topic for her too. “I was looking forward to enjoying my summer, you know.”

Chuck didn’t contest it. “Admit it. Pathetic never looked so chic. Actually, you don’t even have to - it’s all in the eyes.” He flashed her the signature Chuck Bass smolder, but, actually, it was just an excuse to stare at her a couple seconds longer than he usually might. Something about the cool disdain in Blair’s expression was relaxing. He tried not to think too long about what that meant. “I know.” But - Blair knew as well as he did that Gossip Girl was an institution, not so easily done away with as they might’ve thought. “Got any secrets you wanna spill before she does it for you?”

“French as fuck. I think I dated a French guy called ‘Lacrosse’ once… Or at least I dated his credit cards. Nate—,” she started but found the sentence dying off. No one had ever accused Georgina of being sensitive. Of being kind. But she recognized that look and didn’t want to keep poking the wounded bear (shock). Pulling on her very best smile, Gigi canted her head, twirled a strand of ‘don’t say no to me’ hair- “Why? Why not, Chuck-E-Cheese. Let’s go eat. And drink. Make fun of the wannabes talking about the Hamptons too loud when we both know they’re ‘summering’ on their tragic balconies. Um, maybe ‘make fun of’ isn’t on brand to say anymore but you know what I mean. You have, like, a job now. You need to take breaks. I need to look cute…”

“What a stupid name. I despise the French.” Cherry popping aside, Chuck had known Georgina a long time. And while she had turned over many leafs over the course of their not-quite-a-friendship, it was obvious to see that there was something different about this go-around. For one thing, Georgina appeared to have a genuine interest in cultivating relationships with people that weren’t Serena. Maybe he needed a friend or two, now that his main one appeared to be indefinitely down for the count. “Yeah, alright. I’m picking where we’re eating and drinking, though. People have been sucking up to me at half the restaurants on the Upper East Side, by now. I’m basically a walking zagat guide.”

Blair looked down at her phone then back up again, paler than 30 seconds ago, to see someone doing the exact same thing. She held a single finger up with a prim sniff. “No. If whatever you’re going to say has anything to do with what you just looked at, I do not want to hear it. In fact, if you have nothing of value to say in general, why don’t you turn around and bother someone else, hm?”

“Touchy, touchy,” Chuck said, letting out a low whistle. He lowered into the chair next to her, slumping a bit. On the table between them, he set down a box of chocolate - Godiva, the gold collection. “Gift from a vendor. Yours for the low, low price of don’t talk to me about Nate.”

Georgina knew that Chuck wasn’t happy about it, Nate ghosting. Nate was like his Serena in the way that Georgina adored Serena to a fault. Would do anything for her (had done anything for her). And they always hurt you.

Lucky for Chuck, Gigi was pretty sure that Nate loved him back at least. “Yeah, you’ve got a point there. ‘Lacrosse’ had too much going on for it to make the Archibald password quota. If he’s not Gossip Girl then he’s a little bitch,” she added before scrunching her nose up. Ugh, not very ‘new leaf’ of her. “Sorry. Are you, like, free now? From the meetings and stuff.”

Chuck snorts. “Yeah. Is lacrosse French? Nate was always shit at French.” Christ. He’s not drunk enough to be feeling this sentimental. A little drunk, ‘cause it’s after two, and the only way he gets through endless business meetings is with a crystal decanter by his side. He actually thinks he does his best work a little tipsy. Probably his dad’s stupid substance abusing genes. He’s pulled out of his own thoughts by Georgie’s question. “Uh, yeah,” he rubs his thumb along the arc of his Rolex. “‘Til tomorrow. Why?”

“Ew, Chuck,” was her instant reaction to hearing he’d spent the last four hours in a boardroom (sickening) but then she thought better for it. “Sorry, that sucks. Someone has posted on Gossip Girl’s old blog and I just feel, like, we need to be freaking out more. Or destroying whoever did this. Or—,” she stopped, hit with a realization like a freight train, “Wait. Nate is gone, right? Nondescript reason with super shady ghosting and now this? Do you think…?”

Admittedly, Nate is a bit of a sore spot for him. Super shady ghosting aside, he remains a little hurt that he didn’t get any sort of a heads up. He might’ve hired a PI or two to look into it, ultimately to no avail. “It’s not Nate. For seven years, his password to everything was ‘soccer.’ One time he asked me how to spell orange.”

Georgina Sparks had been working on this whole ‘good person’ thing for a while now and she had it down. Okay, so, maybe she wasn’t totally perfect but still! She hadn’t ruined anyone’s life in almost a year. If anything, she was in serious danger of becoming boring (quelle horreur!). You can be better, be kinder and try harder all day long but it doesn’t change you entirely. That was her defense, your honour, for viciously turning to the nearest bystander and waving her phone at them— “Do you know something about this bitch?”

Chuck glances up from his phone screen, casting a lingering, obviously judgmental look at Georgina’s. “Uhhh, no. But I spent the last four hours in a boardroom, so you’re lucky I remember your name.”

She didn’t even glance at Chuck, but she sensed him falling into line with her—their feet matching pace, the distance between them closing comfortably.

She hated it.

“You’re not really going to the cabana, are you?”

Chuck couldn’t help but snort. Blair was the only person who could match him blow for blow when he was like this - itching, bored, a little venomous. 

“Why?” he asked, a wicked smile curving his mouth. “Are you afraid my raw animal magnetism will propel all the eligible bachelors away? Come on, Blair. Since when is a two-digit IQ and a vacant, gormless expression enough to keep you entertained?”
