As Wisconsin farms struggle, some farmers are turning to hemp to save their businesses. "We want to be able to have something to retire on," farmer Janet Gamble said. That's why at the back of Turtle Creek Gardens, an organic vegetable farm, Gamble and Steve Tomlins are growing something new -- hemp. Because of a new research pilot program, for the first time in 50 years, farmers can legally grow hemp in Wisconsin. The plant is similar to marijuana but only contains trace amounts of THC, the element that makes people high. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection regulates hemp. It has approved 344 grower and processor licenses in Wisconsin. The farmers have high hopes for their hemp, but they don't know exactly how profitable it will be yet.
