Hello, i am kinda new to the whole tumblr thing, this page will be a trial run for all things that interest me ig? Idk how often im going to post, if ever, but id like to share some of the (knit/crochet) projects ive been working on or my thoughts on shows/movies/books(?)/maybe some ff recs if i read one that really blows my mind.. as i said, im new to this so i apologise in advance if i do things that are weird, or wrong, or any other not-nice adjective, of course feel free to call me out on things like that, i promise im trying my best!

Id just like to thank all the people who write wikipedia articles. Specifically the math topics. It is always a life saver when i have to understand some math theorem and everything is in one place and i can click through it all. Thank you, youre making my life 100 times easier.

Yeah, honestly we need a better format for textbooks/books/articles. Particularly to chase down notations and definitions and motivations better. We can also embed little interactive things and show examples and whatnot. I do my best to include notes on notation in everything I write but really it needs so much more!

i think wikipedia is an excellent place to do all of this, but I also think that textbooks/books/articles are not (though more examples would be nice sometimes). notions/definitions/motivations, at least in well developed areas of math, are being written about already by math historians. most books already open with the disclaimer that they are too long or too short and I don't think it's worth it to bog them down with material that is not immediately relevant

right now I'm reading Ferrerios' history of set theory which is really interesting but I would not want 99% of this information in a book on set theory. there's simply too much---a whole book's worth in fact. I think we could do a much better job at promoting math history and the work historians are doing because learning history will make you a better mathematician. but also, since it's not really math, it's just not immediately relevant.

(I cannot speak for articles because I cannot yet read them. I'm self teaching at maybe a first year graduate level which heavily influences my opinions here)

I do think motivation, referring here to how they 'came up' with the next step, not to (shudder) applications, is crucial in actually communicating mathematics at all. And I think it is often missing.

But my position I think is mostly borne of an issue I've run into multiple times before is that a paper won't clarify that it's using some notation or other that I'm not familiar with, and it is difficult to track down. Because different textbooks and places and people do use different notation for the same things sometimes. There are times when some terms have two or three slightly different definitions and nobody clarifies which one they are using. Maybe because they think it's obvious, but it's a difficult thing to look up.

I have definitely heard that critique of articles many times before and that is an easy fix. you're absolutely right there. explaining notation and providing explicit definitions would not really add much to articles which is hardly a concern in the digital age.

I would like to hear how you would prefer to have motivation implemented into a larger text. I personally like the straightforward definition-theorem-proof format because it allows me to think about how everything works together myself. would you consider lengthening a text acceptable to make room for motivation or would it be added at the expense of the "actual" mathematics? to think outside of the text, even though I self-study, how much of the motivation aspect can and should be placed on a lecturer?

Hmm. I do... understand the appeal of the definition-theorem-proof style. It makes for very good textbooks after you've had some form of introduction to the material. It makes the textbook into a dictionary of sorts. Very useful. Makes for a good compact reference book. I have a handful like that.

But if the goal is to learn things from the book, particularly if the book is claiming to be an introduction to something. I do think the motivations are worth the expansion of the book. I do feel like the motivations do have mathematical value in increasing your understanding of the objects and models and theories that you are working with.

You're right that a lecturer does often provide this. You don't always have a lecturer or someone who you know who understands it for a topic you want to learn, even if you're a formal student.

I am capable of understanding things without being given a motivation, but motivation makes it a lot more easy and quick to remember the definitions and proofs and to develop that intuition and understanding when trying to do problems and examples. It hints at additional properly mathematical information. It helps you realise certain connections and patterns that would otherwise take you time to figure out.

To put in my two cents, im assuming that motivation is why we want to use something? And i agree that its way easier to remember and understand the point of things with it, but i also think(against my better judgement) that the lecturer is responsible for that part to some extent, even though ive had to find the motivations on my own time countless times now.

Idk how niche this is, but im learning abt spiral similarity( dont ask me what it is, i havent gotten to the point of understanding it yet...) and this one paper made an example by similarising(?) A drawing of a pig and i was like, ok, an interesting choice and then i looked at the webside and it was called(translated into english) pig.com !

Side note: istg the colourwork on the top shrank the sock by 5 sizes, im not exagerating, i cast on the large pattern(72st i think) and it barely fits me(medium). I know exactly what the problem is, but im too stubborn to frog it so im choosing to believe that blocking is going to fix everything :)
