Gabe: She gets in tomorrow afternoon. She wants to surprise Isa and pick her up from the babysitter, then take us to dinner.
Gabe: I'll probably close the gallery around four.
Cece: Perfect. Did I tell you I've ordered her some flowers to say thank you?
Cece: And I have a casting at 11 and will be done by 1. Although I need to head into the rum house just to check again if Adam's going to be okay on his own.

Gabe: What's up, sweet thing?
Gabe: Less than two days until New Orleans.
Cece: Hey, boyfriend-of-mine and giver-of-the-most-amazing-gifts-ever.
Cece: Babe, I am counting down the hours, nevermind the days. When do you finish work tomorrow? When does your mom take Isa?

Adam nodded as she talked about plans changing. He wasn’t sure he could handle changes like that. He had his dreams and he wanted Shy to follow hers. There was no way either of them were ready for a kid and Adam admired Gabe and Cece for raising one at their age. He supposed that if Isa was around five that Gabe had actually been a dad for a while, and that thought made him want alcohol in his soda. Kids and marriage were a long way off for Adam, even if he had been thinking about how soon he could be engaged.
Adam still hadn’t gotten used to how bold Cece was. “No” Adam said without elaborating. He was quiet for a moment before he tucked his phone away. “I don’t show my work to anyone really, I mean my poetry I send to publishers, but my prose and Journals are secret. Sometimes I read them to Shy. Otherwise, if you want to read something I’ll let you know if I am ever published.” He smiled and finished off his drink, tossing the cup in the recycling. He nodded towards the door. “should we head back in?” He asked.
Cece raised an eyebrow when Adam shut her down. She wasn't used to being told no, but a part of her was impressed by how he'd managed to deflect her question so politely. "Well, I look forward to being able to buy something with your name on it. I'm intrigued now, new boy." She shot him a cheeky grin, yanking the fire door and holding it open for him to return inside. The bar was far warmer than the stoop outside, thankfully.
When they were settled back behind the bar, Cece left Adam pouring a drink whilst she spoke briefly to the owner who had been in the office upstairs. When he asked about the new member of staff, she nodded towards where Adam was easily chatting to the small crowd of women at the bar. "Take a look for yourself. I think he'll do fine on his own."

"Hey, a fire extinguisher is always a good idea and every home should have at least one. Random appliance fires happen all the time. And you never know what could happen with candles, especially if there are a lot of them." Raine was fully aware that she could be a little neurotic at times, something of a nag, and a mother hen. She couldn’t help it, she cared about her friends, and always wanted to see every one of them happy and healthy. And this was good. Everyone in their little close knit circle was happy, and dating someone else within the circle. It was perfect.
"A dress is good. Or whatever you want to wear." Raine blinked a few times then started to open her mouth before stopping and taking another drink of her wine. She hoped Cece wasn’t about to start sharing. "Well, okay then. You know I don’t do the whole girl talk thing that involves actually talking about sex, right? I really just feel like that topic is one that should only be discussed between the two people who are having it with one another, or who are planning to. You and Gabe do what you do, I don’t need to know anything. Also, I don’t need those images in my head ever. No offense." She shook her head.
Cece laughed from deep in her stomach, Raine's desire to know less than nothing about what went on behind closed doors still as amusing to her now as it was the first time they'd had this conversation. "It's fine, Raine. You don't want to know about Gabe and I, and as long as B is getting happy with you and no-one else, I don't want to know any more than that." Even if Raine had been interested, there wasn't much to tell. She and Gabe had been so busy recently, with work and getting Isa prepared for school and puppy training, any time they had together was more likely spent cuddling than anything else.
She took another sip of wine and reaching below the sofa, grabbed the remote control. "You wanna find something entertaining to watch on Netflix? It's been a while since I had the opportunity to watch something that wasn't rated PG."

Let's Dance
There was a coat check room at Ampersand, and Shy handed over her wool coat, entering the club for the first time. There were two levels, a quick search on the internet had revealed, the bottom floor mostly consisting of a long bar and lots of tables, jukebox rock filling the space. Upstairs, dance music thudded; she had seen the colored strobe lights in the windows a block away. She was wearing a thin-strapped black dress that barely covered the tops of her thighs and boots that brought her from 5’4 up to 5’7. Holding her clutch purse, just big enough for lipstick and a credit card, she scanned the room for Cece or Raine. She’d only met the girls briefly and was terrible with faces, so she looked for a mass of shiny black hair, or a tiny girl with a huge smile.
For once, Cece had managed to get to her destination on time - in fact, she was early. Her helpful friendship with the barstaff meant she already knew that neither Raine nor Shy had arrived yet, and so she toyed with her drink absent-mindedly. She'd heard so much about Shy from Adam that it felt strange that she had only had a brief conversation with the other girl. Still, she had promised that she was up for a crazy time, and that was something Cece could get behind.
Seeing a familiar looking face hesitating just by the cloakroom, Cece slipped off her leather jacket and headed in that direction. Shy looked good, in an intimidating kind of way, and Cece touched her lightly on the arm to get her attention. "Hey, Shy? How are you doing?" She smiled broadly, the prospect of a girl's night seeming more appealing now she wasn't in the club, sober and alone. "You want a drink?"

"You know that I am all for a trip to go shopping, whether I’m the one doing any buying on not." She furrowed her brow for a moment. She liked candles, they were great, they were romantic. "Yay for mood lighting but not too many candles because they’re a fire hazard any way, and all those paints and the canvases, kinda dangerous. We don’t want a celebration ending in any sort of disaster or tragedy. We should also pick up a fire extinguisher if Gabe doesn’t have one there. Safety first. Always."
Raine grinned, nodding her head, and chuckled lightly. “No, that’s all completely understandable. I never ever would have predicted we would actually be friends. Things can change so quickly. I’m not happy with everything that happened, certainly not with how certain things happened, but I think we’re all where we’re supposed to be, or we’re getting there. You know, I’d like to think that it’s all for the best in a way. Learning and growing experiences.” She grabbed another slice of pizza. “So, any idea on what you want to wear?”
"Okay okay, miss-health-and-safety." Cece rolled her eyes. If Raine thought that candles were a fire hazard it was probably a good idea not to tell her about where Cece kinda hoped the paint might end up. At least it was non-toxic. "Although a fire extinguisher probably isn't a bad idea, between Isa and the puppy and Gabe's usual difficulty in following even the safest recipe." She collapsed back into the sofa, the food and wine making her happy and content.
Raine looked happy, which was a relief, all things considered. Cece hadn't realised just how much she worried, but seeing Raine now, with perspective on everything which had happened, she realised how nice it was to not have any drama to talk about. For once. "Uh, I was just going to wear a dress, I suppose. I'll have to drop Isa off at her playdate's, so I wasn't planning on dressing up. Just leave my hair down - Gabe likes that..." She smirked, barely, "that way it doesn't matter if it gets a bit painted. You know?" It was impossible to hold in the coy smile, and she raised an eyebrow at her friend.
New Boy
"Yeah, came here with Shy. She has dreams she wants to follow and I want her too. I wasn’t willing to let her go so I followed her" Adam and Shy were doing all right for a new city and trying to make new friends. "I like bartending, I meet people, talk to them. I want to be a poet, the plan is to get published, writing in a big city is supposed to be magical, but if I end up working in a bar, maybe owning one down the line, I don’t think I would mind." Adam liked people. He liked meeting new people, having conversations, learning new bits of history or a language right from the lives that were interweaved in that. "I haven’t fallen in love with the city yet, but it’s growing on me. I’ve had some of the best take out I’ve ever seen in my life here."
Adam sipped his drink. “what about you? Whats the plan?” He asked, watching her. He had noticed that this city was full of dreams. Dreams for the arts, for success, for family. He wondered what the city could actually offer, how many dreams it could actually grant reality before everyone else was only left with the shattered remnants of the hopes they once had. He got distracted, still listening to Cece, but he pulled out his phone and wrote out his thoughts briefly, after his shift he’d try and put them into something workable, maybe in his journals.
Cece nodded as Adam spoke, rambling a little about his hopes, his plans. She enjoyed the long draws on her cigarette, inhaling deeply as she contemplated his question. Once it would have been easy - model until she couldn't get any more jobs, travel the world, do whatever she needed to that lead to money and respect and designer shoes. But now - now there was Gabe and Isa and Juno, now designers were throwing money at her to go and be their 'face' and Cece didn't know how to turn them down. Running her hand through her hair, she replied.
"I'm a model. That's sometimes the day job, sometimes the dream. And I sing, too - when I went travelling, I paid my way as a backing singer. But I always wanted to model, to see my face on billboards, to have a whole closet full of designer clothes." She shrugged. "I've settled down a bit now though; the plan is more about getting Isa into a good school. Plans change, I guess." She stopped and watched Adam tap on his phone, finishing her cig. "What do you write? Have you got anything I can see?" Once again, Cece said the words and then almost immediately regretted them.

Cece: So I got your number off Adam. I am just letting you know that I am at the main bar in Ampersand and there is a shot here with your name written all over it.
Cece: In other words, get yourself here, like now.

"Well, you could move," Gabe teased, lowly. "If you want to destroy a priceless work of art." He’d left his phone in the apartment, and he was actually glad. If he took a picture of her now he’d have less of a reason to stare at her, to commit every detail of the painting and her body to memory. Putting the brush down on the pallet and pushing both out of the way, Gabe stretched out beside Cece, propped up on an elbow. His fingers filled in the spaces between the paint, slipping just under the fabric of her bra before moving up, over her collarbone and down her arm. "But I like having you at my mercy."
He leaned over so that he could kiss her, tilting her face toward his, worrying at her lips softly, barely making contact, drawing away completely before moving back in. There was a wicked smile on his own mouth. The paint on the canvas behind them was drying, colors slightly less intense but highlighted now by the vestiges of an orange sunset outside the studio’s huge windows and flickering candlelight. “We don’t have to go all the way downstairs, do we?” he mumbled, nibbling at her jaw, palm smoothing down, over her stomach and around to the curve of her ass, turning her onto her side so they were facing each other.
