Cauliflower Rice Stuffed Peppers! A hearty, healthy plant based meal with only 10 ingredients!
Period. End of Sentence. (2018)
“When did drinking your coffee black become a shade of cool? Add three scoops of sugar, and two drops of cream. Take to the streets with big signs and scream. You can rally and lead the front of line and still not like the bitterness of wine. You can keep fighting the good fight and still love someone with all your might. There is courage in fighting for a softer world, in clawing for freedom with nails and teeth, but there is no shame in still liking things sweet.”

you’re going to get that dream job. you’re going to learn to love yourself. you’re going to realize your potential. you’re going to attract so many interesting, amazing people. you’re going to be happy - because you’re going to work hard for that.
College things that people won’t tell you about (Warning: brutal honesty included)
The food
You will most likely get sick if you are not used to the food that the university cafeteria serves. Not in a “oh god I’m dying and throwing up everywhere” sick, but more in a subtle way: slight stomachache, maybe some constipation, gas, or diarrhea, it all depends of how your body reacts to it, how the food is being prepared, and what you are eating.
Talking about what you are eating. You will have the option to get a burger and fries for every meal, or pizza, or cake. Don’t do it. For your health’s sake, don’t. I know it sounds tempting, and I know fries for every meal is delicious (fry lover here!), but I am telling you from experience, you will regret eating the same greasy food so often and your body will show it for you.
For about a week in college I started to not care about myself (e.g. neglected skin care, ate crappy food, did not exercise, was barely doing my school work), and it was starting to show. I gained about five pounds in just those days (more about it later), my skin was greasy and I was getting pimples like crazy, I was having stomachaches everyday, and I felt as if I was getting lazier as days went by. I decided to change my eating habits. I chose fruit and salads instead of a burger and fries/pizza. And it helped me get my life together a little bit. I felt healthier and my skin cleared up.
Freshman 15
Yes. You will gain weight. It is normal, and you should not freak out.
There will be lots of food available to you and no one to stop your from eating what ever you want. You will have more than too many snacks sometimes, or a second dinner because you decided to go eat again with your friends. It’s okay. Try to stay active so the weight changes are not extreme; go for a walk, or go out running, hit the gym often, practice your sport, etc. Just keep moving.
If you think you might be dealing with an eating disorder, contact your clinic and they will put you in touch with psychological help available on campus. Remember, nothing wrong in admitting that you are having problems, help is always there.
Condoms and Sexuality
When it comes to sexuality, I am open to discuss the subject as if we were simply talking about groceries, you can just ask my friends. I consider that I’m a very sex positive person, because it should not be a taboo subject (unless it is making someone uncomfortable). We need more sex education available (luckily, Planned Parenthood had some workshops at my school, and being who I am, I dragged my friends with me to one), many people do not know how to even put on a condom, or what sex might lead to (pregnancies and STIs/STDs).
Anyway, I’ll keep it simple: carry your own condoms even if you yourself are not sexually active (check that they are not expired, ripped, and keep them in a safe place); if you decide to be sexually active, in any way (one night stands or something more stable), get tested (there are many resources on campus, if you do not want to use them, look for the nearest clinic and get it done there); if you think that sex is just not your thing (i.e. asexuality, saving yourself for marriage, etc.) that is perfectly fine and you should not let anyone shame you for your decision or pressure you into having sex.
Snacks and Water
Carry snacks with you at all times, especially if you are planning on being out most of the day. You will get hungry, and therefore grumpy or weak. Also, carry a reusable water bottle so you can keep yourself hydrated.
It can be fruit, bars, trail mix, anything that can be considered a snack. Now if you want to carry a lunch with you, I am not stopping you.
Peer Pressure
This is not something that happens only in HS. It happens everywhere, and if you feel like you are being pressured into doing something (alcohol, smoking, drugs, sex, anything) stand your ground and be firm with your decision. I don’t care if you think you might lose friends or look like a weakling, if you do not want to do something, NO ONE should force you to do it. In the case that you are feeling uncomfortable in any given situation where peer pressure is taking place, get out of there; forget about “looking good for your friends” or “being cool with them”.
Extra Chargers
Carry your chargers with you at all times. Your laptop charger and also your phone’s, you might not know what might come up that will force you to be out working for long periods of time ahem, group projects that require you to meet until late at night or that take almost six hours.
Laundry
For goodness’ sake, DO YOUR LAUNDRY once a week. (I usually do it on Thursdays because i have noticed is the day with the least people. Try not to do it on Sundays, everyone does it on Sundays)
Story time because, why not?
I once went about three weeks without doing laundry. It started with me just being lazy and saying that I would do it in a few days, then next thing I know it’s midterm season and those days turned into weeks. By the time I decided to do my laundry, I already had both of my laundry bags completely full (I had to take my spare laundry bag from my storage thing lol). The trips to the laundromat were easy, except for having to carry those heavy laundry bags. Once I got there I had to wait for washing machines to be empty….
What I am trying to say is: don’t put yourself in the position that I was in. Be responsible and do your laundry often. I’m also saying this because dirty laundry might get smelly such as gym clothes, and you don’t want to stink up your dorm.
Exercise
Try to stay active. I know we all think that walking from class to class is enough physical activity, but no. Go for a walk, try to go for a run, ride your bike around, go to the gym, and try to do these things at least 3 times a week. If you do not stay active, you will store extra fat, your joints will hurt, you’re prone to suffer stress more. If you struggle with doing physical activity, get together with a friend or a groups of friends and simply go for a walk; it takes away the stress and you are moving at the same time.
Just stay active.
Majors
No shame in changing your major. So you thought you were going to college to study something but along the way you realize that you prefer something else, good, change it. Don’t stay doing something that makes you unhappy only because you started with it. Changing your mind is part of any process, and in college it will happen a lot of times.
Time management
Get your shit together. I’m saying it like that because that is how I realized that I needed to manage my time better.
Get a planner, some apps to help you manage your time, study in time lapses and take good breaks, have a plan for the day, prioritize your school work over social events or parties or whatever it is that has been taking your time and distracting you from doing your work, get some to-do lists and cross items out as you complete them, have a goal for each day (”today I want to finish this essay and proofread it”).
Finish what needs to get done first so you can go and do any other things that you want. Create a balance.
Money Management
We’re broke college students I’m just stating the facts here.
Try to have a spending plan, or a budget, and stick to it. Save some money from the money you get (when I get $10, I save $3). And I know I am always advocating to the whole Treat-Yo-Self thing, but don’t abuse it. Treat yourself but think, ‘do I really need this? how many times will I actually use it? can I get it for cheaper?’ Think before you buy, so you won’t end up just wasting money that you WILL need later.
You can get a piggy bank if that is what works for you, but just try to not waste money on useless things. Remember that money does not grow on trees, and it is something that is earned with hard work, so value it.
Also, don’t go out every day or try to spend money the way your friends spend money. Allow yourself to say “I cannot afford that right now”, no shame on that. Don’t feel bad for having to turn down plans because you have more important spending to do. It’s okay, really, your friends will understand.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of my points, message me and I will gladly talk to you. And let’s remember that as Studyblrs, we are here to help each other and build each other up.
If you still have questions about something and I did not include it in a post, let me know and I can write about it.
anything is possible if you’re productive.
are you screwed? me too!
you know what you can do though?
block distracting websites, fix yourself a cup of tea or coffee (whatever tickles your fancy), pull out the thing you told yourself you were going to do when you were filled with that to do list optimism, and get as much of it done as possible. put on some tunes if you’d rather be binge watching random videos on youtube that are telling you the 10 signs you’re a genius or psychopath or the 10 things you look for in partners. I see u.
Rory Gilmore, Hermione Granger and Elle Woods are watching you.
now go.
do you have any tips for starting university?
I actually can’t remember if I’ve ever written one of those posts so here it is now! This is based on my personal experience, I hope it helps!!
Starting University
1. Get a planner. It doesn’t matter which brand, which size, which colour, or if you do it as a bullet journal or a printed agenda or a digital app, just get one and actually use it. Especially in the first weeks you’ll be bombarded with exam dates and deadlines and email addresses and all kinds of small information that you need in one place.
2. Organise your stuff. As soon as you know what you need for each class, get organised. If you have loose sheets flying around in no order and half of your documents are called “homework” and “homework 2”, things will get difficult when the exam is near. Write the date on all your papers, bring them in chronological order, decide if you need folders or binders - and if you work digitally, name your folders and documents in a sensible way so the spotlight search is of actual use. Also, don’t implement complex systems with 30 notebooks just because they looked pretty in the store - you’ll have to carry that stuff, so it needs to be functional.
3. Find your rooms. I always walk to all my new classrooms a few days before I have a class there so I won’t get lost or be late. If you need to, take pictures of the route or the door. Some are tricky to find, especially if you’re new on campus, and when you only have 2 minutes to spare before class starts and no one is around it to give you directions it just causes you unnecessary stress. (Also a good way to make friends because then you’ll be the one giving others directions!)
4. Use your motivation. Chances are that you’re more motivated in the beginning of the semester, so channel that into your work and stay on top of things. Getting behind on your work in the first weeks where the basics are taught isn’t the best and will leave you with more work later on in the semester. Put effort into those basics, ask questions, make sure you understand them - and if you still have time and motivation left, work ahead on your assignments if you want to.
5. Get exam-ready. Sounds excessive because you only just started and exams are miles away, but the more diligent you are with your notes and assignments now, the less work you’ll have before the exam. Summarise things so you can use those summaries for revision, maybe even start writing flashcards for important definitions and names that you know will come up in the exam. If you do that throughout the semester, you’ll have much less work in revision.
Good luck at university!!
How to Study when Sick
A week or so ago I fell sick and of course I still had a mountain of work to do, so during that time I found a few things that helped me when studying while I was sick. Without further ado here are a few tips on how to study when sick…
Before studying
Fluids
When you’re sick, your body needs fluids! Sometimes water can taste really gross when you have a sore throat so grab some tea; either herbal tea or good old English breakfast or try some hot water with lemon and honey; it does wonders for the throat! Make sure you have a big old cup next to you that you can grab for often.
Comfort is key
Dress comfy for your study sess! If that means your daggy sweatpants and oversized jumper or even pyjamas, do whatever is going to keep you warm and comfortable. But not too comfortable where you will fall asleep haha.
Eye drops
If you need to use computers while you’re sick make sure to have some lubricating eye drops on hand! You don’t want to get sore, tired eyes or even a headache when your body is already run down.
Gather supplies
Gather what ever supplies you will need when your studying. Here’s a list of some things might be helpful (of course just get whatever works best for your sickness!) :
What you are studying! (Flash cards, notes, computer)
Stationary (highlighters, pen, white out, ruler, sticky notes)
Tissues
Blanket
Cough drops
Tea/fluids
Snack
Medication
Deep heat
Hot water bottle
Hand sanitiser
Eye drops
Nasal spray
Humidifier
When studying
Small tasks
Do small tasks that require less brain power, so you don’t over exert your brain. Think easier tasks like flipping through flashcards, writing flash cards, organising notes, re-writing notes, planning your week, compiling lecture notes with textbook notes, making quizzes for yourself, an easy work sheet or going through last week’s class content.
Set timers
Set timers for when to take breaks and medication. You could even try using the Pomodoro technique to keep you motivated and productive.
Have a small do to list
Along with doing smaller easier tasks, have only a small to do list or maybe 2 – 4 items that will only take you 1 – 3 hours to complete in total, depending on how well you are feeling. By doing this you will feel more motivated to complete the small to do list as you know the tasks are simple. Additionally, by adding in breaks or using Pomodoro you are taking extra precautions against working to hard which will slow down recovery.
Ambient study sounds
The best thing I found to help me stay focused is to listen to ASMR ambient sounds. I found some great channels that make ASMR ambient sounds based on different rooms from movies, tv shows and books. Here are my two favourite channels ASMR Rooms & Story Ambiance. Some of my favourite videos (all harry potter themed, so I can feel like Hermione haha) are Hogwarts Library, Studying in the Great hall, Gryffindor Common Room, Potions Classroom and Sitting in a Hogwarts Class.
After studying
Make a to do list for tomorrow
After you have finished everything from today, make a to do list for tomorrow. This is an opportunity to brain dump anything in terms of school that you are worried about completing and gives you direction for the next day.
Have something to look forward too after your session
Have something planned after your study session that will be relaxing and enjoyable. Something like watching a movie, reading a book, calling a friend, watching a YouTube video; basically, anything you enjoy and look forward to doing. This can act to motivate you to get work down yet also be a much-needed winding down reward for you brain and body.
Take a nap!
You worked hard, made a dent in your to do list and feel productive so take a nap! Your body needs to rest so give it what it needs and take a nap. This will help your body recover quicker and will help your mind to relax from working for a long time.
Extra tips
Be easy on yourself
If you only complete one item before getting too tired, or if you couldn’t even complete one to-do, then that’s fine! Have some self-compassion and realise that you’re sick and won’t be able to be as productive as normal. Once when I was sick, a task that took me normally 45 minutes to do took me 2 hours because my brain was so foggy, and it was hard to concentrate. You’re not alone in being unproductive, we all go through it went sick and run down.
Don’t overwork yourself
Nothing is worse than over working yourself when you are sick, it will only make you stay sick for longer! Do not push your self to be a productive super human when your body can’t handle it, its only going to make you less productive in the long run
I hope some of these tips help you for when you need to study whilst sick, have a head ache or are just run down. Take care of yourself and remember not every day can be productive : )
Imagine being in your Hogwarts house common room with a candle floating above you to provide some light for your late night reading session 🖤📖🕯

MAKE A BUDGET: and stick to it. making a budget can be confusing and difficult, but what we’ve found is that understanding where your cash flow is coming from is absolutely key. be realistic about the goals you set, and set aside a small buffer amount each week in case something comes up. budgets don’t have to be the same every week, because what you do in a week can change.
check out our second post in the finance series: how to budget
USE CASH: and leave your bank card at home. studies have shown that people are more likely to spend less when using cash because there’s a better sense of how much money they’re spending/saving. besides, using cash will force you to stick to a budget!
BRING YOUR OWN FOOD: we love food but food is expensive. buying groceries every week or two and making your own lunches/snacks can save you a lot of money in the long run. (see this buzzfeed article for some recipes)
BUY GENERIC BRAND: because most of the time, generic brand is just as good as name brand. don’t let prejudice keep you from saving money!
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE THINGS: if you want to hang out with your friends, consider free events happening around you. there’s usually always something happening on campus. at the very least, you can always get the free swag from those events!
APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS: yes essay writing can be a pain and it may seem like a snowball’s chance in hell that you’ll get it, but just do it. a lot of scholarships don’t get as many applicants as they make it seem so you have a better chance than you think you do!
TEXTBOOKS: borrow them from a library if you can and take pictures of the pages you need (or just do your work at the library.) failing that, see if your school bookstore lets you rent textbooks instead of buying them! If you absolutely have to buy your textbooks, buy used whenever possible. don’t be afraid to scrounge the internet for a cheap(er) copy.
EVERY CENT COUNTS: even though Canada has discontinued the penny, this still holds true. as broke students, we all know that sometimes that nickel can make or break your day. so save what you can, even if it doesn’t feel like much!
this is by no means an exhaustive list. if you have more tips, send us a message and we might make a follow up post!

How to Write for Scholarships
Writing for scholarships (including statements and essays) can be kind of a pain. There are countless scholarships and each has their own requirements and essay grading criteria. But if you put the work in and take the time to really rock it, there could be tons of money in it for you. Here are some tips that’ll help you nail writing for scholarships.
Write About Things You’re Involved With Clubs, athletics, and volunteer work—any organized activity you do outside your schoolwork is fair game. It shows that you’re well-rounded and dedicated to not just your studies, but a bunch of other cool stuff.
Write About Obstacles You’ve Overcome Write about where you come from and how got to where you are now. “Perseverance in the face of adversity” is a phrase people like, so show how you’ve displayed perseverance in your life.
Talk About What You’ll Do with Your Education Give them a reason to give you money. Show the scholarship-granter that the money they invest in you will be well spent.
Keep It Short and Dense Like brownie. It’s delicious and satisfying and it doesn’t take too long to eat. Do the same with your writing. Just don’t eat it.
Write Multiple Drafts Your best essay will likely not be your first one. So rewrite a couple of times. You’ll find errors to fix and better ways to word things.
Get a Second Opinion Get your friends, teachers, parents, older siblings, pets, etc. to read your writing and provide their opinion. They might have an insight or two that you hadn’t thought of.
Toot Your Own Horn Brag! This is your time to sell yourself to the scholarship-granter. Prove to them that you’re a good investment and you’ll put their money to good use.

weird study tip:
if u don’t feel motivated, pretend ur in a movie or tv show. you know the scenes where they’re on their bed with their feet tucked up and crossed at the ankle, and they’re cracking open highlighters with their teeth and poring over a textbook with smooth rock music playing? that. bonus points for a perfect messy bun and spencer hastings outfit.
ive been working my ass off in school and im really proud of myself!! im also continuing to research colleges, scholarships, grants, etc and im making sure that im preparing myself the best that i can for college. Ive also joined some clubs dedicated to volunteer work so im excited for those to start up this week!
