Legitimately one of the few plus sides of having already been diagnosed as an asymptomatic carrier is the knowledge that, well, I am incapable of becoming any "more infected" than I already am. Which is a definite positive, considering at this point I am more than certain that I have been exposed to just about every type of bodily fluid imaginable in the line of work.

Looking at the groups (or "packs") that the infected will sometimes form, something interesting is that very frequently, a large percentage of them will consist of individuals that knew each other prior to their infection. Reports have arrived of family members, friend groups, and even classmates. This cannot be entirely explained by mere proximity, as if that were the only factor these would merely be random groupings of whatever hosts happened to be nearby. It is a fascinating look into how deeply established social bonds may be formed.

On a very relatable note, something I'm beginning to realize is that the infected are extremely prone to overstimulation, which helps explain quite a few behaviors. They are set off by a number of things such as bright lights or flashing, loud noises, a lot of sudden or jerky movements, and even sometimes things such as unfamiliar environments or harsh scents. Note that many of these, unfortunately, are things that can easily be caused by some hapless uninfected person. This is probably in part because of their enhanced senses, but also seems to be simply that they live in a world that can be entirely overwhelming to them. Their first reaction is typically to destroy whatever​ stimuli this may be through any means available to them, which they will go to sometimes absurd lengths to do. Failing this entirely, escape is the next option, and should the first two options be exhausted entirely they may enter a state of meltdown.

This is a brief break from my typical study to deliver a PSA to any of you survivors out there. I've seen that it is common practice to siphon gas out of cars and pretty much anything else available in an effort to travel long distances. However, gasoline does have an expiration date. It may be okay for the first several months, but after this it will begin to break down and become unusable. Half a year in, your attempt at a dramatic escape is very likely to leave you stranded instead.

As a scientist, I truly wish I could believe that they are empty, mindless killing automatons. Sometimes it turns my stomach realizing that they die alone and afraid like the rest of us.

The infected’s ability to learn is something that’s difficult to study, but something of note is that the incredible aerodynamic feats reminiscent of parkour or freerunning that the Hunters are known for is definitely not something that comes automatically once someone has turned. As a matter of fact, while capable of leaping great distances, most newly-changed infected of this subtype seem to take a decent amount of time to become used to navigating this way, during which the great majority is rather reckless and clumsy. Rather it seems that this was a skillset among certain individuals, more than likely from before they became infected, and because it proved beneficial to their unique hunting style others gradually adapted it until it became what you might call “common knowledge”. If true, this would provide a clear example of learning by example, and using it to benefit oneself.
