I did a semi-radical thing recently, inspired â as many semi-radical things these days â by tumblr. Â
I went through a whole day deciding that I was the hottest thing on the planet.
I wasnât competing, wasnât throwing myself out there, wasnât dressing differently, it was just in my head, and therefore, in my attitude, I decided I was gorgeous and sexy and irresistible.
Something happened.
People treated me differently.
I didnât have a single rude customer that day. Â I didnât have the middle-aged white men who ignore my polite âalohaâs because theyâre too good to say hi back. Â Everyone said hi back. Â I got lingering looks from young men, young ladies. Â On my drive home I got actually, factually hooted at by a couple of guys in a truck (nothing that would make my inner warrior rage, just a non-rude âI notice you thereâ little âooohhâ sound). Â That hasnât happened to me in about sixty pounds.
When I went to get gas, the young man watched me walk up to him to pay and he smiled at me the whole time I was walking up, smiled like he was excited to see me, like he knew me. Â When I left he said, âYou have a beautiful day.â
This is me, Iâm a girl who has had garbage thrown at her on more than one occasion just because Iâm so invisible, no one noticed me standing near the trash can. Â This has happened, actually, lots of times. Â It happened last week. Â
The only thing I changed was my perspective. Â It took work. Â I concentrated all day. Â I had to fight the urge to feel like it was arrogance talking when really it was self-love. Â All I did was tell myself I was too hot to handle, and I believed it. Â The rest of the world seemed to catch on.
I recommend this little exercise, for all of you.
I had no idea this had gotten so many notes, and it makes me so very happy that this took off. Â I had a few people write to me saying that they were scared to even try this as an experiment, scared to even think so well of themselves for a day. Â Maybe itâs time to bring this back around. Â Maybe itâs time to remind myself, and to remind all my friends and neighbors, that itâs so important to think that youâre beautiful. Â Itâs so important to KNOW that youâre beautiful. Â Doesnât matter who or what you are, or how you identify. Â
Youâre a miracle. Â Youâre ice cream. Â Youâre a puppy. Â Youâre a constellation. Â Youâre Christmas morning. Â Youâre strawberry lemonade with the game playing low on the radio and your team up by a buttload of points. Â Youâre the Sunday funnies. Â Youâre so beautiful I want to just grab your faces and plant one on ya right now.
Walk like your hips will change history. Â Hold your head like royalty. Â Know that you are everything that is delicious in this world, and this world will taste it on you when you pass by. Â I promise you.
Do it today. Â Do it again tomorrow. Â I will do it with you, and Iâll be there for you. Â We have to love ourselves. Â This is the only way to let love in from anywhere else.
