Advice for Future Students

When coming into this class, I was very nervous due to not knowing a lot about sociology. Do not be nervous about going into this class. I found this class to be very interesting and informational. At the beginning of each module, Dr. Jacobson would give an overview of the week’s content like how many pages to read, how long the lecture videos are, the quizzes and discussion post. If you organization yourself each week and dedicate time to read the book and view the lecture videos then the class work will not be as much. My tip I like to give is when reading the book or viewing the lecture videos I like to take notes during it. This helped me understand the information more and help me when I took the quizzes. Also, toward the end of the class you will have to do a project for your final grade. The project is finding tumblr post related to all of the modules we done. Each time a module you unlock make sure you are trying to find time to go to tumblr and looking articles or things for the project. Waiting last minute is not a good choice due to the amount of work and other classes trying to complete can be too much to handle. Just try your best to stay on top of the project, discussions and quizzes. If you do that then you will do just fine! Good luck and have a great semester!

Reflection

Sociology is extremely important. Before taking this class, I had little to no knowledge coming into this and little interest. This class taught me a new perspective and showed me how important sociology is. This class is overlooked and should not be. People need to be taught or informed about society. I have learned so much about sociology and techniques to use and remember. All the information and tools Dr. Jacobson taught me I will carry with me for life. This class really helped me prepare myself for my nursing career. Now I understand when I see people do the things they do in the environment or society. I have a better understanding and a different view on how to treat and approach people such as a different race and culture. Also, I have a better understanding on why some people have different passion or strong opinions on different things like women’s right or immigration. Two topics that really had an impact on me were the race and gender/ethnicity. In the race unit, we were required to watch a movie (more a documentary) called Killing Us Softly. This movie talked about women and media and how media portrays women. My eyes were open and I was taught an important lesson. I had no idea how much a company can put into an advertisement and how they can treat women in it so negatively. The second topic race, really showed and talk about the difference with white and colored people. The videos Dr. Jacobson showed were shocking, but very true. One of the videos talked about prison. 1 out of 17 whiter person would go to jail. On the other hand, 1 out of 3 a black person would go to jail. What shocked me the most was the large gap between the numbers. This class really inspired me and brought a different perspective in my learning and environment.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Chyann Jewell. I am 21 years old and a current college student. I attend Harrisburg Area Community College and my major is nursing. Ever since I was five years old, I had a strong passion to become a nurse. My goals are to get my bachelor’s degree and work as a maternity nurse or a NICU nurse. One unique fact about me is I am an identical twin. Her name is Kaitlyn and we might look the same, but we are two separate individuals. My parents divorced when I was thirteen months old and my father got remarried when I was seven. I have two biological sisters (Amber and Kaitlyn), two step sisters (Kelsey and Laurel) and a fat cat named Chester. My step sister Laurel has a disorder called Rett Syndrome. She is my main inspiration to go into the medical world. She showed me my strong passion for caring for people and pushed me to make it happen. My hobbies include hanging out with family and friends, spending time outdoors, hiking, fishing, star gazing, going to the beach and traveling. Traveling is my next passion in life. I have not been to a lot of places, but I have dreams and goals. I been on two cruises and once you get on one and experience it, you will become addicted like I did.

In a 10-year study in Maryland, students’ reports of being bullied decreased and more students reported feeling safe at school.

Bullying in school is becoming more of a problem. Schools are starting to see this is becoming more of a problem and starting to implement no bullying laws or groups. Parents and student have different opinions on this. Some parents and students think schools are doing enough for preventing bullying and others may think schools are not doing enough. To determine how many children get bullied in schools we use a certain research called quantitative. Quantitative method is “seeking to obtain information about the social world that is already in and can be converted to numeric form.” (p.47) Quantitative method is not the only method. The other method is called Qualitative method. Qualitative method is “collecting information about the social world that can not be converted into a numeric form.” (p.47) For this informtion we will use qualitative to form a number of children who are bullied or not bullied. We use these types of research to see how well our society is running well. “Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Seventeen percent of american students reported being bullied two or more times.” (DoSomething, 2017) These numbers are shcoking and tells us a lot about our educational system. Most schools will look at these statistics and cosider of what to do to decrease the number. Committees and groups will get together to talk and discuss on what things to do to decrease bullying. Reseaching is a critical part of sociolgy. Without research, we would have no way of knowing how our soceity is working and doing as a whole.

Sociology is all around us. We are constatnly involved and thinking like a sociologist even when you do know you are doing it. This quote from C. Wright Mills really captures on of the key parts of sociology. Sociology is “the study of human society.” (p.3) Sociologist are constantly asking questions about different things or situatuions they see in society. They ask themselves why does this occur or the meaning of this. In order to think like a sociologist you need to have sociological imagination “the ability to see the connections between our personal experience and the large forces of history.” (p.4) Forming questions, asking questions, answering questions and connecting them is the general idea about the thinking process of a sociologist. We would not have any undertanding about sociology thanks to the many great sociologists from history. This includes the following (but not limited to) C. Wright Mills, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. Without these great sociologists we would not have the understanding or tools to learn about society. Thye taught us valuable knowledge on how events we encounter today and in the future shape our lives positvely or negatively. This is a never ending cycle. The events does not just shape our lives, but shapes our society as a whole. In order to shape our lives and society, we have to look at different apsects as either a micro or macro level. Micro focus on a face-to-face and different types of interactions between individuals. Macro focuses on qualitativemethods (like historic comparisios) and in-depth interview. (p.41) Without these great, historic sciologists we would not have the tools to become great sociologist.

This picture is showing a powerful message. Social deviance is increasing in society which is increasing crime with adolescents. Social deviance is “any transgression of socially established norms.” (p. 191) This can be something simple or serious. For example, social deviance can be breaking a social norm like walking on the wrong side on the sidewalk or picking their nose. An example of the serious side of social deviance would be committing a murder. Adolescents are being affected by deviance more than others. Adolescents can have different reasoning why they do what they do. Most of them do social deviance to fit into society or social integration. A lot of teens decide to join gangs with other teens. This can make the teen feel like they are part of an activity, a dangerous activity. Gangs can lead teens to committing multiple street crimes like rape and beatings. Drugs and drinking is just another part with gangs. Now more teens are starting to experiment with alcohol and drugs at such an early age. They drink, do drugs and party until dawn just to feel a rush of emotions. This just makes them feel like they are part of something great when it really not. Also, some do it just to have the title. Teens ask each other constantly if they do drugs and drinking. Saying no and not being part of it can make them feel left out and worthless. This all needs to change. Us American adult’s job is to provide our children and teens with the proper knowledge to make smart decisions for themselves. Teaching them and emphasizing to them at an early age about what is right thing to do, wrong things to do and finding great friends to be around with. Parents need to be involved in their children life by making sure they know what they are doing in school, activates, and the friends they hang out with. Teaching them at an early age can help keep them away from social deviance.

From Midnight Mass to Secret Santa, Daisy Buchanan reveals the family Christmas traditions she wouldn't want to miss

Christmas time can be the most favorite holiday for people or the worst. For me, I start to get excited for Christmas after Thanksgiving. Putting up the decoration, tree, and baking cookies gets anyone in the Christmas cheer. Does everyone celebrate Christmas the same? No of course not. We all tend to have an ethnocentric way of thinking. This means “belief that one’s own culture or group is superior to others, and the tendency to view all other cultures from the perspective of one’s own.” (p.80) Christmas is celebrated differently due to the different culture. We Americans tend to think of our culture as the norm when it comes to holidays or different situations until we really sit and think about the differences. Culture is “the sum of the social categories and concepts we embrace in addition to beliefs, behavior and practices.”(p. 78) Here in America most of us grew up believing in a big, red, cheery guy names Santa Claus. From an early age, most people associate Christmas with fabulous decorations, baking cookies, family time, presents and lots of shopping. Christmas can overwhelm everyone to the point where we truly forget the real meaning of Christmas. I have personal experience over this. The true meaning of Christmas is celebrating God’s son Jesus birthday. Its all not getting presents. Each culture has different beliefs and views on holiday tradition. For example, in England families and children cannot open their presents until the Queen’s speech is done. In France, they do not call their present deliver Santa Claus. France people know him as Noel. Typically in France they open their presents on Christmas Eve. All these different Christmas tradition in culture I named are known as nonmaterial culture “the values, beliefs, behaviors and social norms” (p.82). The list of differences can go on and on.

Justine Greening was speaking at a conference on social mobility, which she described as a “cold, hard, economic imperative” for the country. Ms Greening drew on her experience growing up in Rotherham as she outlined the challenges faced by poorer families.

Social class is a common topic in today’s society. People are constantly discussion what class system they belong to. Class system is an “economically based hierarchical system characterized by cohesive and oppositional groups.” (p.251) Children can be affected by their social class that their parents are in. A family’s wealth can determine a lot of things for children and one of them is sadly affecting their education. A United Kingdom woman named Justine Greening went to a conference and decided to speak about social mobility and children’s education. For the country United Kingdom, she described social mobility as “Cold, hard, economic imperative.” (Worley, 2017) Social mobility is not the only problem she states. She has seen a change in children’s education. Children who come from a poor family tend to show signs of higher intelligence or academic than rich children. Children who come from rich families tend to show delay or a slow academic start, but where does these children end up in the future? “Children from high-income backgrounds who show sign of low academic ability at age five are 35% more likely to become high earners than their poor peers.” (Worley, 2017) Even though higher-income children have a delay academic start in school, they catch up later on in life. Rich families can afford to send their children to a better college to earn a high earning degree. Lower income or poverty families cannot afford to send their children to college to get a high earning degree. These children might start out well academically in school early on, but struggling in the future. Each child might have an equality of condition starting out in school, but changes later on as they progress.

Gender stereotypes in movies and on TV shows are more than persistent; they're incredibly effective at teaching kids what the culture expects of boys and girls.

Gender and the media are having an impact on children. Most children are spending their extra free time watching their favorite cartoon, educational shows or movies. Are the shows and movies our children watch really good for them? According to a study that CNN states, this is not the case. Gender stereotypes are being found in the television shows and movies that children watch. These stereotypes are teaching children cultural expectations of what a boy or girl should do or be like at a young age. This is what is having a major impact on the children due to the exaggeration of gender roles. Gender roles are the “set of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female.” (p.289) For example, these shows can teach that boys are smarter than girls or certain jobs are best for men than women. Sometimes these shows show a hegemonic masculinity which means “men are dominant and privileged.” (p. 289) Little children see the characters as strong, muscular, beautiful and full of bravery “superheros”. Fast forward to when they are in the teenage years, these superheroes turn into aggressive and violent characters that are dealing with relationships, sex, and jobs. These exaggerated gender roles are causing our children to grow up being confused and acting the same way. The best way to fix this is the parents. Parents can limit their time on watching television and teaching them the proper way to let children just be themselves. How to talk about race with your children

Racism has been the topic for centuries and sadly is still today. Racism is the “belief of that members of separate races possess different and unequal traits.” (p.325) Racism is found everywhere from the workplace, schools, restaurants and much more. This is becoming more of a problem. Even young children know the difference. For example, in the article a five year old little girl was pointing out her picture to her mom. After pointing her picture out, she pointed to a picture of another girl in her class saying that was her friend “That girl-the one with the black hair.” (Russell). This five year old little girl just showed her mother her friend by stating her hair color instead of her skin color. This might surprise you in a way, but it shows that racism is not always a problem. Right after the fiver year old pointed and showed her friend’s picture to her mother, her mother responding to her by saying everyone is equal. Her mother is trying to teach her daughter about ontological equality approach. Ontological equality is the “philosophical and religious notion that all people are created equal.” (p.329) Most people tend to have a ethnocentrism type of thinking, but this is not always the correct way of thinking when it comes to racism. Teaching children about the difference in people’s skin color and ethnicity will help them have a better approach and thinking about racism as a ontological equality. Teaching your children at a young age about racism can really help improve the battle of racism being present in today’s society.

This picture really says a lot about our society. WIfi is an important factor for phones, iPad and laptops to operate. Technology has been become more involved in daily life. Ever since cell phones came out and improved over time, this is the new communication. Socialization has decreased significantly. Socialization is “the process by which individuals internalize the values, beliefs, and norms of a given society and learn to function as members of society.” (p.118) Due to cell phones taking over, people are constantly on the phone either texting, calling, Facebook, social media or games. This is causing more people talk to each other less and more time on their phone. In addition, it is causing more people to use their phones in places they should not be like driving or during class. Children are also affected by this. They are growing up in a technology generation were all they see and know is technology. All children want to do is play and get on technology. This is causing children not to socialize with other children, parents or adults. Symbolic interactionism is very important for adults and children. Symbolic interactionism is “shared meanings, orientations, and assumption form the basic motivations behind people’s actions.” (p. 138) Symbolic interactionism are used to help understand cultural differences through social interaction. The older generation tend to have to resocialize themselves due to the change in technology. Resocialization is the “process by which one’s sense of social beliefs and norms are reengineered, often deliberately.” (p.131) Keeping up with technology now is important due to advancing so quickly. An example why is because most work companies, boss’s, consolers, etc will use email to communicate back and forth. Most phones come with email, but if you do not have a phone then it makes it harder to communicate. #socialization #haccsoci201

President forced to make a quick getaway after his first visit home since winning the White House

It was a case of so near and yet so far. Donald Trump returned to New York on Thursday night for the first time since his inauguration, yet the closest he could get to his home in Trump Tower was 10 blocks away as the city that made his fortune greeted him with noisy protest..

The president bypassed his Fifth Avenue penthouse, where First Lady Melania and youngest son Barron still live, bound for the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier on the Hudson river, where he attended a gala to mark the 75th anniversary of a major second world war naval battle.

To heighten the bitter-sweetness of his homecoming, hundreds of protesters gathered blocks away from the vessel clattering pots and pans, chanting “Shame, shame, shame” and bearing posters proclaiming: “Impeach the Freak.”

Social movements are becoming more popular and powerful. Social movements are when groups of individual people focus on a specific political or social issue and voice about it with signs and items. There are many famous social movements from the past. Examples are civil rights movement, pro-life movement, environmental movement, feminist movement, black lives matter movement, and more. This article represents a recent social movement. Every time election comes around to elect a new president you will see many social movements about the upcoming president. Even after the new president is elected there are a few social movements and this is one of them. Trump brought a lot of mixed emotions to people. Some people like him and others hate him. When people in New York found out that Trump was coming to New York some were not happy at all. “The closest he could get to his home in Trump Towers was 10 blocks away as the city that made his fortune greeted him with noisy protest..” (Gabbatt and Pilkington, 2017) Men and woman gathered showing their powerful signs and message to the newly president. “hundred of protesters gathered chanting shame, shame, shame and holding their signs saying Impeach the Freak!” (Gabbatt and Pilkington, 2017) These new Yorkers were not just upset with him visiting, but the new law he just removed or changing. Trump decided to remove Obama’s Affordable Care Act. These people are not happy that he is changing or removing the Affordable Care Act. They want to protect themselves, family and friend’s health by keeping this law available. Personally, I was upset when Trump decided to take this away. All people want to do is to protect themselves by standing up for themselves to what they think is right.

The American working and middle class has been left behind by globalization. We live in a world now where the wealthiest 62 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.6 billion - half the planet! In the United States, workers don’t have jobs, people can’t afford to pay back their college loans. The one thing that left right and center are clear about is that the system is not working, and the system can’t fix itself.

This quote really states a lot about globalization and the working class. Globalization has a major effect on the working class and middle class. “The wealthiest 62 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.6 billion.” (Levin Institute, 2016) This statement is just shocking. If you are not wealthy or rich then struggle in is the future. The middle class are fighting to find better jobs to pay off loans and live a normal life. Most people are either for globalization or thinks it’s horrible. Then you have someone like me and others who have never heard of it before. Globalization is “a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and government of different nations thanks to trade and investment.” (Levin Institute, 2016) Trade is a big factor when it comes to globalization mainly free trade. There are pros and cons when it comes to free trade. A negative thing that comes with trade is an increase of taxes. Taxes are added to trade. Many people have stated that the added taxes make the rich richer/wealthy and the poor even poorer. As you can see, globalization mainly has a positive effect on the rich or wealthy people. The United States is not the only country that is being affected by globalization. Other countries can be affected as well. In order for the U.S. to have cheap goods and items made is to send these items overseas to other countries. Some of these countries are not even developed as well as the U.S. This makes harder work on them and less work on us. In addition, this makes jobs availability less. If jobs are open and found are mostly likely comes with a pay cut. This is causing the middle class to suffer due to jobs not paying their workers enough and little benefits. Most people who are in the middle class do not want to say they are. Denial will come in and take over Americans until they truly see how globalization has impacted the working and middle class.
