I love finding fics where the author clearly states their plan for a simple storyline at the beginning, and then watching them slowly unravel and lose control as the story grows and grows and grows into a beast of a thing, an epic for the ages.

Dean catches Cas for what feels like the millionth time, staring at him, studying his face as if he's prepping for some kind of test. Dean arches his eyebrow in a silent question. Cas reaches out, gently tracing the lines on his face, and breaks the moment with a sly grin, “I’m memorizing these—just in case I have to pull you from Hell and build you from scratch again.” Dean guffaws and pushes Cas’ hand away. Cas smiles fully now, unperturbed, and pulls Dean in for a kiss.
