Alternatives to Protesting the Streets
OmL would like to start off this post by saying that protests can be in different forms, sit ins, boy cotts, petitions, etc, are all different forms of protesting. You can start there if you can’t be out on the streets.
There is no shame to being unable to protests on the streets - there’s different reasons why someone can’t and they shouldn’t be shamed. It isn’t performative activism if they can’t. Some may be disabled, can’t handle crowds, or can’t go because of their family, risking their legal status, etc.
That being said, here are a few other ways you can still be active (without protesting on streets)
• Boycotts, Sit-In’s, signing petitions, writing to legal activists/local governments -> Pretty basic stuff you cal do easily without being at risk of a crowd trampling you. It is also a less-physical protest form as not everyone can walk that far.
• Offer rides, be someone who can answer texts/calls, provide check-ins -> When protesting, it’s always good to have a ride there and back, if you’re able to drive- you can offer your friends/family rides. Being able to answer texts or calls and check in with those at protests can also help others stay safe and they know you’re there to be contacted.
• Offer Food, Water, Masks -> You can park a few buildings out from the protest and have a sign near your car that you’re providing materials for those who need it. Sometimes just some water and food can be helpful for those out protesting, especially those who are diabetic or when it’s hot out.
• Share information -> Sharing information of protests to others, whether it’s reblogging posts, reposting, or just simply sending protest pamphlets to friends can help organize the movement. Word of mouth or posting fliers also work! It doesn’t have to strictly be online.
• Write -> Writing short essays, blogs, and everything in between can help educate others and make you more knowledgeable on what’s going on. You can upload them, share them around in your city, or send them out to family, discord servers, etc.
A basic list to alternatives than street protesting! If you have more, feel free to add comments or reblog.
