Listen this will get way to long with all the descriptions so we're doing it this way. These will take you to posts for each fandom. I hope this is easier and cleaner.

Summary: Ilya Rozanov was 12 years old when he was adopted by his billet family in Ottawa, Canada, 7158 kilometers away from the place where he had once lived entirely unknown to one Shane Hollander. Shaneās life hadnāt been the same since ā a lost piece of himself found, a brother he never knew he had been missing for so long, a connection that was instantaneous and⦠forbidden. Wrong. Undeniable.
Now, following another cruel twist of fate, Ilya is back and Shane must finally face the wreckage of the years that had passed between them, and the dissonance of the brothers they were meant to be on the surface versus the family they had always been locked away in the shadows of their hearts.
Chapter 1 of Podfic for Up All Our Little Victories (and Losses)
Read by: GinevraReads (GinevraFangirl)
If you liked her cold read of Change Your Win Conditions or were just waiting for someone to do the second in the series, it's here now! Remember, podficcers need love to, be sure to comment if you enjoyed!
āHello?ā
āShane, thank godāā
Shane Hollander held a hand over the mouthpiece of his phone and called back over his shoulder, āJust one minute, guys, keep running that drill.ā His father was still talking.Ā
āāsee the news today?ā
āDad, Iām in the middle of practice, can this wait?ā Impatient bordering on cold.
āShane,ā David said, the urgency in his voice cutting through the static and snapping his son to full attention. āDid you see the news? That flight in Seattle, the emergency landing?ā
āWhat? Yeah, IāI guess I heard something about it on the drive to the rink? Why?ā
āIlya was on that plane.āĀ
Some unnamed emotion hit him all at once, that same dizzying rush of vertigo and memory and guilt and loss he felt anytime Shane heard the name. Ilya. It had been years, he hadnāt seen him since, what? The wedding? A piece of him lost forever that night, heād felt it like a death.Ā
And then the fear came. Ilya was on that plane.Ā
Five words and Shane Hollander learned that maybe there could be a distance still greater than the one they had erected between them.Ā
āIs he all right?ā Panic was rising, clear in his usually monotone voice. āDad, is heāā
āShane. Your brother needs you.āĀ
So uh... Hollanov brothers anyone? š Cause I just finished chapter 2 and she's a long boi. Gut-wrenching angst guaranteed!
Hoping to get one more chapter written and then thinking about starting posting this. Please yap at me if you're as excited as I am, I could use the motivation to pull myself kicking and screaming out of this writing slump! Save me, Shane Hollander's sad, wet eyes, SAVE ME š
If you can't withstand it, I get it. If you have to protect your mental health, do what you must.
But as a librarian, a reader, and a writer, please hold off on deleting your work if you can. You can orphan it on AO3 or go anon! There are options.
Please don't let the censors win because that's all they are. Censors in new coats with the same shady underwear. They are bullies and people who cannot conceive of creating things themselves. They have existed in every fandom with varying degrees of success and they will always be there waiting in the next one.
Your writing is worth preservation. It is worth standing there against the test of time long after these jackals have moved on to the next likely looking prey.
And if you love something you're reading, comment when you can. It's hard to admit, but sometimes that one negative comment needs a lot of positive ones to drown it out. Just how the mind works, nothing rational about it.
So, two months ago (ONLY TWO!!!) I hid my fics. Which, like, shouldnāt be some a big deal considering itās just fanfiction and Iām just some guy. And I was open with my reasons for my choice. I wanted to create distance from it.
Except the opposite happened. Iāve been bombarded by messages from people who have never even spoken to me before. People who literally only just followed me just to try and get the fics. People have commented on other fics of mine with demands (yes demands) for me to send them my work. People sharing my work on public google drives and posting it on Reddit. People reuploading my work on wattpad and random websites Iāve never even heard of?
The last straw was someone uploading my fics to AI. Hiding them hasnāt given me any peace because people donāt know to behave. And Iām so tired of spending my time chasing down things to get them taken down just because people seem to lack any sort of respect.
My fics will go back up. Not because I feel comfortable having them up, but because I literally donāt know what else to do. I want to be in control of the things I wrote and I canāt believe how much itās been taken away from me. But Iām logging out of everything. Alarainai is going to die an online death and Iāll start again somewhere else under a new name because god damn some of you have ruined the last good part of this for me.
So fuck (some of) you. And thank you to everyone who has been kind to me (the fics are for you only<3). Itās been fun! Sort of.
This sucks on so many levels. I fucking hate seeing author's have their joy taken away, I hate seeing them leave, even if they may reappear under a different name I liked their style and now I have to hope I'll run into them again.
happy trans day of visibility to nonbinary people, people who donāt feel ātrans enoughā, people who have a complicated relationship with transness, people with weird or āconfusingā genders, nondysphoric trans people, trans people who donāt medically transition, closeted and pre-transition trans people, and anyone else who isnāt sure if this day is for them. i see you š
Okay, community manager hat on. I'm ticked off because I keep watching this hurt people I care about and it's made me a Very Angy Indeed.
Ya'll gotta stop with the AI accusation bullshit. In every fandom. Full stop.
Is it important that we do not feed the stupid machines tech bros are dumping all their money into? Yes.
Is it an effective use of your time to harass fandom content creators about it? Absolutely not.
You aren't fighting against AI - you're instead targeting harassment at someone that you cannot prove nor have the authority to prove is using AI.
I have more to say under the cut if you want to dig into it, but I'm just so tired, ya'll. Be kind to one anotherāfandom is one of the few healing things we have in this world. Don't be a part of what's burning it down.
All of the "proof" I've seen tossed around comes down to:
How fast someone can write. That means people with flexible job hours or who are unemployed or who just happen to be very fast writers are AI? This is so incredibly arbitrary. People can't build a backlog and publish on a regular cadence? People can't re-upload works that they've taken down and edited, but you had no idea they weren't previously posted? There are so many holes in this argument I could use it for several golf courses.
Usage of specific words. I really don't know how ya'll are picking these; it might as well be a dart board taped to a dictionary. LLMs are trained on the whole-ass internet. Of course they're using terms they associate with your fandom, they learned from your fandom in the first place.
An AI-detecting tool told you so, even though they don't fucking work. Even ChatGPT shut down their own AI detector because it was so bad at detecting what was or wasn't AI. Even the best ones shouldn't be trusted wholesale; at best, it's a flag for suspicion, but it can't be a full condemnation of a work.
Repetition. I hate to tell ya'll, but I suffer from repetition in my own writing. As a result, I'm actually quite good at spotting it as an editor because I've had to train myself out of it. Some phrases just sound pleasant. And sometimes there's only so many ways to describe fellatio. Whatever the reason, repetition will happen because it's how many of our brains function.
LLMs were trained on us. Of course we, as humans, going to sound like them; we're basically their unwilling parents. But even more importantly than that, you are doing nothing but causing harm in your fandom by throwing around accusations.
You aren't:
"Sticking it to the man." Even if the person you're accusing uses AI, what did you accomplish by harassing them? If one person stops using it, it isn't going to stop the AI movement. If this is something you're actually passionate about fighting against, support a union fighting for anti-AI provisions. Try out a fun AI poisoning tool! Support an actual human creator by commissioning a piece or commenting on your favorite fic! The more people are rewarded for being fucking human, the harsher the blow we deliver to the AI movement.
"Keeping the AI bros out of our community." Most creatives hate AI. It's been extremely damaging to writers, artists, musicians, voice actors and other content creators who rely on their skills to survive. It's hard enough to survive as an artist! Most are underpaid and, at least for those of us in the US, don't have or get benefits. We're actively incentivized not to use AI collectively because it's how we're going to save our careers. "Made by a real human" is going to be the selling point for a lot of these areas in the future - I already see it at craft fairs and artists alleys I visit, posted in big, bold letters and bright signs as visibly as possible. And every single time, that sign will get me to come browse their stuff.
"Saving your fandom." A lot of creatives create for fun even if they do it for work. Outside of the extremely slim chance your accusation is correct, in the much more likely event that you are wrong, you are chasing out talented, passionate people from your community. You are making your fandom smaller because you're doing what we all know you should not be doing in a fandom: gatekeeping. And if they are using AI? There's a really good chance they're not going to stop anyway because the barrier for usage is so low. You will wind up with a higher population of AI generated content in your fandom because people being falsely accused will give up and leave and people who don't care... well they already don't care and are likely going to keep doing what they're doing.
The world is on fire enough. Stop dumping your precious energy into tearing each other down. We only have so long in this life; if you want your efforts to be for good, then use your time and energy to create, uplift, and support each other.
Community not Consumerism: Fandom Etiquette for the Heated Rivalry Newbies (who are on my Last Nerve)Ā
First, I need to address that the only social media I use is Tumblr, a private Discord with friends, and AO3. So the fact that I know about this terrible behavior means it is bad.Ā
Second, credentials. Iāve been in fandom spaces for over 15 years, creating for 11 years, and I have a Bachelors and (almost) a Masters in Creative Writing. I also was an editor on a literary magazine during my graduate classes. I normally donāt flaunt the degrees, because Good Writing comes from experience, not just degrees, but The Kids have me steamed.Ā Ā
Now on to the Issue.Ā
Heated Rivalry (the show) is barely four months old, so why am I seeing fanfic authors already deleting fics and jumping ship on the fandom?Ā
Because I have seen thee most entitled comments Iāve ever seen in my fandom experience. People upset that a WIP isnāt uploading fast enough. Upset that a WIP isnāt going the way they want. Witch hunting authors because a fic is too good and too long to not be written AI. Leaving unwanted āfeedbackā and ācritique.ā Upset when authors take creative license. Just straight up bullying.Ā
Yāall have got to stop it or youāll be out of fic by the end of Pride Month.Ā
This kind of behavior isnāt new in fandom (see, flame wars), but the severity and amount is flabbergasting.Ā
To the newbies, I am begging you to stop. Fandom is about community. Fandom community is about uplifting and supporting those around you. Itās about making friendships; creating headcanons, fic, art, and meta; and going āLook at this cool thing!ā to your friends. This behavior of trashing fics in the AO3 comments, blasting authors on Twitter, and being a general all-around obnoxious human is relatively new and invasive to fandom.Ā
If you are new to fandom, this behavior can and should get you ostracized.Ā
When youāre new to an alt subculture, your job is to learn the history, respect your elders, and shut up when youāre wrong. Regardless of what you may believe, fandom is an alt subculture. COVID and then Heated Rivalry has shot it into the stratosphere. This kind of behavior is based on overconsumption and an idea that everything has to be built around your comfort level. Get used to being uncomfortable.Ā
If you hate, hate, hate a fic, use the back button and talk with a friend. Do not tell the author in an AO3 comment. Do not subtweet or vague post.Ā
And to authors? Keep blocking the assholes. Lock your fic to AO3, so if someone does comment like this you can block them. Monitor comments if you need to. And honestly, if youāre done with this behavior, delete the fic. I know it absolutely blows, but do not keep it up if itās harming your mental health. Take care of yourself first.Ā
To the authors still posting: I see you, love you, and hope you have your favorite snack for life.Ā
To the authors whoāve deleted/left: I see you, love you, and hope you have your favorite snack for life.Ā
To users leaving excellent comments: I see you, love you, and hope you have your favorite snack for life.Ā
And if you leave these comments and have never written and posted a fic? I dare you to do it. Once youāve put yourself out there you might find that your behavior is pretty terrible.Ā
u know what i fucking love. is that it's so clear that many of us have important full time jobs. yet you can see us here on tumblr throughout the work day posting about the most unhinged shit possible. like we're really out here going to a meeting then coming back to tumblr like "shane drippy big dick bouncing on that thang" before running back to another meeting like Hi Linda yes I talked to the team earlier and we're ready to send the documents over. How was your weekend
ilya asking shane if 'boston is nice too' is a sweet little moment bc it's a reminder that despite the bravado he's also just a teenager who's on his own in a foreign country now
