I have very complex feelings on Needy Streamer Overload. It is one of the most raw and accurate depictions I have ever seen of mental illness, with one of the most accurate characters struggling with their mental health. Everything about how Ame engages with the world and how she speaks is so stunningly accurate to how someone in real life would engage online. This includes how the game writes her flaws. Ame is not a good person, however her actions are never meant to dehumanize her or reduce her down to her struggles, and I appreciate how the game shows the raw human side of someone struggling so deeply like this. The true ending of the game stuck with me in a way I can’t really describe, even now. I just had to step away from my computer and think for a few days.

That being said, the game isn’t without its flaws. While it does give a proper flash warning in the beginning, I feel as though the content warning doesn’t properly prepare the player for some of the events that can happen in game. I’ve always had this issue with how media treats content warnings, oftentimes the creators are far too vague about the type of content happening in their games for fear of spoilers and just leave it at “This game contains dark themes.” Which, as a result, leaves the player to have a Russian roulette wheel of potential triggers that can be set off at any time. For me this was Ame’s first ‘Self Destruct’ mini game, and while I won’t say what happens here for fear of my post being taken down, it contain the topic of s/lf h/rm. I was completely blindsided by this, as I thought the game had already shown me the full extent of its dark content. Luckily I didn’t have a full blown panic attack, but it did leave me quite shaken for a while. So please keep that in mind if you ever play.

The second point of contention I have with the game is that I find the gameplay to be a bit to repetitive at times, especially if your going for all of the achievements and endings like I did. After a certain point of clicking around and figuring things out with no direction, I felt as if it started to play ‘reset the day’ simulator to get different results. After a while I resorted to using a walkthrough, which didn’t take away from my experience by any means— it just made me wish that there was some sort of checklist or hint system that could help you find endings.

Overall, apart from some design flaws, the games a solid 7.5/10 from me.

I think with the culture wars a lot of people don't understand anymore that humor changes over time and sometimes what was funny then just isn't funny now not because "everyone is offended" but because it just doesn't land, tastes have changed and the punchline doesn't read.

There's a whole scene that gets cut from every production of Tempest because it is clearly supposed to be funny, but the punchline is "widow Dido," and the best guess is that it was essentially a meme that we just don't get anymore. So the scene doesn't work, it isn't funny, it's barely comprehensible. Widow Dido wasn't canceled, society just moved on to different stupid jokes. One of the bits in Merry Wives of Windsor, a genuinely funny play, that is clearly supposed to bring the house down, and probably did in 1598, is that this one guy is French. That's it, that's the joke. Hon Hon Hon baguette du fromage. Get a load of this Frenchman. At best these days it comes off as silly and juvenile. But to an Elizabethan English person, some French guy fumbling a good English girl was hilarious.

And yeah there's also an element of xenophobia and nationalism there and that's not great, but mostly it's just not really funny anymore that French people exist, it's just like... ok? And??

And i think a lot of like. Bits where the punchline is that people are gay, Steven, or like. A woman is doing something, a Trans person exists, this guy wore a dress, isn't it sooooooooo funny that these two dudes are saying romantic words at each other ironically or acting like a couple like...

Yeah the idea that this would be funny is rooted in bigotry. But also,

It's just not funny? Like ok? This guy is wearing a dress? So what? Like ok this character hit on someone thinking they were one gender and was wrong, that's just a random Thursday in a South End bar, we've all been there? Nu?? Sometimes people are from Wales, yeah, that's how geography works?

So like. Is it actually being "canceled" or did tastes just change? Is this being ruined by sjws or woke or whatever, or is this just going the way of 2000s mustache humor?

This was my stab at Dr Easterman, particularly how I headcanon how he looks. I’ve always read Easterman as a man who’s fundamentally stuck in the past, like a permanent arrested development. I was inspired by a lot of old Hollywood actors alla Vincent Price and Gene Kelly, particularly with the pencil thin mustache. I’ve just never really pictured Easterman as clean shaven, tbh. Hope you like him!
