Malcolm X on the Mau Mau Uprising

They were the greatest freedom fighters in African history that the continent ever had and they will be given credit for bringing about the independence of many existing states in the continent right now. There was a time their image was negative but today they are looked upon with respect. In my opinion, us blacks in America can get real freedom by studying how Mau Mau fought for freedom for their people in Kenya. When the whites in Kenya raided a village and asked about the Mau Mau each of the residents claimed that they never heard of them, but when the night came the same black person who was questioned turns out to be the one raiding the white camps and killing their enemy. This was an excellent job done by the Mau Mau. In fact, we need a Mau Mau here in America. In Mississippi we need a Mau Mau. In Alabama we need a Mau Mau. In Georgia we need a Mau Mau. Right here in Harlem, New York we need a Mau Mau. I say this with no anger but with very careful forethought, that the language we’ve been using towards the white man will never be heard until we learn how to communicate. —Malcolm X
