No further explanation, he leaned over and gave Souji’s cheek a chu. When he pulled back, he finally gave the sticker that had stuck to his face a quick poke.

“Or is that just your way of asking for facepaint lessons.”

In all actuality, it was the leftovers of a theme day at work, but if he was going to be handed ammunition so easily, he was gonna use it.

Okay, that wasn’t quite the direction he had wanted this to go. Not that he could be entirely surprised at the comment, even if Souji had a way of acting like he didn’t mean it. He did the same thing way too often to fall for it that easily.

“…you’re kidding, right? That’s like, the exact opposite of why I, ah… got scared, I guess. Give yourself a little more credit than that.”

Souji simply stared at his friend in silence for a moment before he looked away. They’d been friends for more than a year now, but he couldn’t help but wonder just how much he’d picked up on in that time.

Not a lot, by his judgment.

“Maybe I am and maybe I’m not. Who can say? Either way, it doesn’t really matter, I guess.”

“But why would turn chicken about it to begin with? Don’t tell me my winning personality put you off.”

Among other things. That was just the easiest part to bring up. With a quiet sigh, Sasuke found himself shifting uncertainly. This wasn’t the first time he had thought back on things, and it wouldn’t be the last. What better time to say something than while stuck together and waiting out the proverbial storm?

Probably lots, but hey. Work with what you’ve got.

“…speaking of, in case this whole thing escalates and something happens… I’m sorry I left you hanging the way I did.” He snorted, mostly at himself, “not that saying it a year later probably means much. Still…”

“Serious or not, you deserved way better.”

“I know. People are getting crazy out there. I mean, this place never made sense to begin with, but this is next level.”

He couldn’t deny that he was worried. Admittedly, it seemed like things were far worse inside the city proper than the outlying Districts, but mob mentality had a knack of weaving itself into areas you never thought it could reach before you could do anything. Akoya could hold his own based on what he’d seen and if push came to shove, he could probably fight decently enough, but as for Sasuke and Arima...

He blinked when Sasuke suddenly shifted in both tone and topic. At first, he thought to question him on what he even meant, but thinking back that far, it could only related to one thing. It hadn’t been something he’d thought about in a while--and longer since he’d thought about it seriously--but fear had a way of bringing up the past in the weirdest ways.

“...don’t worry about it. It was just something that happened. If I remember right, we were both a little drunk at the time, so no big. A guy like me isn’t exactly boyfriend material to begin with, you know?”
