Gunn mentioned in the commentary that one of the reasons he regrets Yondu dying is that he knows that he and Nebula would’ve been really good friends, and I’m obsessed with that idea. Just a sarcastic, emotionally stunted father and a sarcastic emotionally stunted child learning to be less emotionally stunted.

#can we talk about peter quill please #he is not dumb#sure he’s doesn’t have the intellect of tony stark or bruce banner but he was abducted when he was 8#i doubt he got the chance to go to school in space #but he is not dumb#he is actually quite clever and could teach a thing or two to tony or bruce about space#hell he could even be better at flying a spaceship than thor#he survived that long out there and can come up with ridiculous plan but guess what? it works#stop saying peter quill is dumb #thank you for coming to my ted talk (via @peterjsonquills)

this is also why it kinda bugs me when people talk about the whole peter/gamora thing as if it’s a reiteration of that annoying trope where a dude is the hero despite being utterly useless while his female love interest who is immensely capable and competent is sidelined. because like… he isn’t? he’s a thoughtless juvenile dick with extremely limited impulse control, especially at the beginning of the series, but his entire opening scene is just like five straight minutes of competence porn. he fights gamora to a standstill the first time they meet. their relationship arc isn’t about her training him to be competent and him quickly overtaking her Because Man, it’s about two immensely competent, immensely damaged people finding family in each other.

He’s Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass. Really. He’s not nearly as dumb as he presents himself, I think partly because he doesn’t think any better of himself (I’d bet the farm he grew up being told he was stupid and an idiot) and partly because it causes people to underestimate him. And as a thief, no one is going to suspect the charming dumbass who doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. It’s not entirely an act (see also: groin grenades), but he’s by no means stupid- he’s exactly the opposite. I mean, Peter Quill is why we talk about the 7/8/9 types of intelligence. He’s not book smart, but he’s got it in other areas.
