I can’t resist a chance to share some Mario lore. Daisy is the Princess of Sarasaland, which was the setting of Super Mario Land for the Gameboy.
Her yellow dress is only really evident on the cover, since the actual game was in black and white.
Far from being an anti-Peach, she was basically an exact copy of Peach. So much so that they could have been mistaken for the same character.
In fact, the first time she appeared alongside Peach, as Luigi’s caddy in an NES golf game, they both had blonde hair.
Though oddly she still had brown hair in the official art.
In the live-action Mario movie, she was made into the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Sarasaland. Here she is with Toad and Yoshi:
Apparently this was done because Peach was then known as “Princess Toadstool” in the US, and the filmmakers understandably thought Daisy was a better sounding name than Toadstool.
This version of Daisy is a paleontology student at NYU. Somehow, despite being only 20 years old she’s the head of an entire dig site.
Despite being raised at an orphanage in Brooklyn, she’s really a mushroom kingdom native. Although it’s worth noting that the words “Mushroom Kingdom” are only mentioned once in the whole movie.
This may seem like a pretty big tangent, but the movie is probably Daisy’s most high profile appearance. And she basically replaces Peach. The two characters were seen as interchangeable.

So basically she was a carbon copy of Peach who was used interchangeably for a bit. From what I understand the catalyst for her reappearance in the Mario Sports games was that Peach needed a doubles partner for the N64 Mario Tennis.
This was actually the same reason Waluigi was created, as Wario in the same game needed a doubles partner.
Before settling on Waluigi, Nintendo briefly considered creating a “Wapeach,” which brings us back to OP’s original point.
And of course, as the spin-offs and sports games continued, Daisy gradually developed a distinct personality. At least, as much personality as you can glean from quips and victory animations in a sports game.
But she was never an anti-Peach, more like a divergent evolution from Peach. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
