The In-Depth Look at Julie-Su Part 14: Sonic the Hedgehog Issues #138-141 Return to Angel Island Arc: First Half
It may say Sonic the Hedgehog on the cover but for all intents and purposes this may be as well be a Knuckles Mini-Series under a different name. Sure Sonic is along for the ride but the focus here is entirely on our favorite guardian echidna.
What is very surprising about all of this is that Karl Bollers is in charge of penning this arc. I assume that is because at the time Ken Penders was focused on the Mobius 25 Years Later back ups which he saw as the true cannon of the Sonic series.
It's so weird to me to see Fiona just chilling with the rest of the good guys.
Charmy along with a redesigned Saffron show up to exposit about what happened to their people.
Knuckles finds out that his dad who was acting as the substitute guardian has gone missing. So he and the Chaotix set out on a impromptu rescue mission. Sonic comes along too since this adventure is happening in his own comic.
In case anyone was wondering why Sonic and Sally are being so hostile to each other in this issue it's because a mere four issues ago (Sonic 134) we had the infamous Sonic/Sally slap scene.
After arriving on Angel Island they attack a group of dingoes with Julie-Su brutally shocking one of them.
A beaten and bruised Remington shows up to explain what has happened since Knuckles has been away. This page has a very significant error where Julie-Su's dialogue balloon should be assigned to Remington instead. At least that how it looks to me when I read the page.
The Dark Legion shows up and another battle ensures.
The battle is interrupted when Knuckles's Mom Lara-Le shows up.
To explain (yet again) at what is going on a new character Dr. Finitevus appears. This character would go on to be an important part of Knuckles story moving forward in Ian Flynn's run. Like with Julie-Su this is another Archie only comic character that I miss greatly.
With Kragok gone the Dark Legion is now lead by Lien-Da who forms an uneasy truce with Knuckles. Julie-Su is very unhappy with this situation and gives her a if looks could kill glare.
And in a sub plot that to this day I am shocked that Penders let them get away with; all of those other guardians that were always hanging out with Locke in the Knuckles series are now gone. For good. Seriously after this panel we never see them again.
To be continued.
The rest of this arc will be covered in the next post which I hope to get to shortly.
