How to Lolibrary, from someone avoiding writing a 1500 word essay:

I'm very verbose at times, and other times trying to express my thoughts is like drinking piping hot soup through a plastic straw. Technically doable, just really hard and involves a lot of frantic hand gestures.

Start easy mode. What can you see on this dress? Colour, details, construction, whatever.

Well, it's black and white. It's got ties at the waist (with buttons! They detach!), and from the slight texture to it, it's embroidered. 2. Open Lolibrary.

Be in awe of the hard-working Lolibrarians who compile this. Support them, maybe donate if you have some coins to spare. You're awesome. 3. Now, we don't know from this photo (which I have cropped, sorry, it's removing mostly background for distractions) whether it's a JSK (jumperskirt - without sleeves), an OP (one piece - has sleeves), or a plain skirt. We shall find out, that's how good we are. 4. At the top of the page, there's a search bar. Press it as if you're going to type, but don't type anything and just hit enter.

Now you can search more! It should bring up more filters, and will show you the most recent additions to the site. These are cool, you should hang out and look at them sometime when you're not midway through a tutorial. Mine's all Na+H right now, which is fun.

5. Now we head back to what we saw on the piece earlier (black and white, waist ties, embroidered, OP/JSK/Skirt) and input them into these filters.

The good thing here is, we can see that the filters contain "Match Any/All/None" - this means we can choose if we want "OP/JSK/Skirt" to come back with: - something that is EITHER an OP, a JSK, or a Skirt [Any] - something that is SIMULTANEOUSLY an OP, a JSK, *and* a Skirt all at once [All] (which is a nightmare I think. Bonus points if you can find one that'd be epic) - or something that is NEITHER an OP, nor a JSK, nor a Skirt [None] (fun fact there are some blouses that match this criteria! fun times!) For this, we basically just need "any", because we're trying to find Pink from @20dollarlolita's black dress so we can stare at it for ourselves.

Well! That's a lot of things to search! Sit down, drink water, find good background noise if that's your Angelic Pretty Cherry Jam Label Pouch, and get to eyeballing.

6. Look closely at the thumbnails if you can. If you can't, you can CTRL+LEFT CLICK to open in a new tab (you can also just right click "Open link in new tab" if you're missing a key or whatever)

This is going to surprise no one, but people can put fake things on the internet.

If you're on the internet and you see some tiktok atelier or instagram influencer showcasing a super easy technique, but you just can't make it work right, it might not be you.

Are they demonstrating their "never clip a princess seam!" technique or their "magical 1-handed rolled hem using nothing but a cigarette and a ball point pen" strategy on muslin fabric?

Muslin is often used for demonstration and test garments and it's not inherently dishonest. It's very useful, because it's stable, doesn't fray a lot, doesn't shift, but will sharply hold a crease when ironed and will stay put if you iron it into a curve or on the diagonal. If someone's hemming a circle on muslin, they can press the turned up area, and a good muslin will stretch at the long edge and compress at the short edge, making a very smooth and flat seam that will just stay there. Not all fabric stretch, compress, or hold a crease.

Using muslin in a demonstration isn't cheating at all. The sewing world uses it in a lot of places for a lot of reasons. The way that it works when it's stretched or compressed or ironed is part of why we do use it. But if you see someone showcasing a super amazing technique on a piece of muslin, and then you can't make it work, it's not you. It might be that they showed a technique that doesn't work on all fabrics, and your fabric isn't one of the ones it works on. People don't disclose this in short-form videos because there's not enough time and people don't go viral by giving the viewer all the information that they need.

Anyway, it's all a conspiracy, don't trust anyone, drink some water, don't hunch your back over your work, and don't blame yourself when something looked way easier on Social Media Application Tick Tock than it does in front of your sewing machine on your kitchen table.
