much as it pains me, i'm moving joanna to @burninghils because i can't handle more than two blogs atm ( i haven't been here for months but you know <3 )
she has more to worry over than not , it seems ⸻ fretting is her sole constant these days , fear & paranoia her ever-constant companions . fear of circumstance , fear of fate ... she spends her hours in a state of fitfulness , her mind plagued by a plethora of reasons to fret . the most recent of which is a plan churning within her father's mind , HER RETURN TO SHACKLES BROKEN BY THE TUSKS OF A BOAR . her autonomy was earned through a conquest of her own , yet stripped away at the patriarch's word . it's a betrayal she finds difficult to stomach .
❝ FATHER INTENDS TO MARRY ME OFF AGAIN . ❞ marry . the word is a poison upon her tongue , vile & caustic . the queen regent grits her teeth until her jaw begins to ache , the muscles rippling beneath her skin . she doesn't look to her mother ; emerald eyes peer from the balcony into the black abyss of early morning , her nails drumming a mindless pattern on the railing before her . ❝ did you know of this ? ❞
❝ we had begun discussing it. ❞ she had assumed the discussion was not finished, but she knows that look in tywin's face well enough by now. joanna's never had false ideas on who her husband is. she married him knowingly, but for a second, she cannot help but wish he had stayed his tongue. she can only guess in what manner he had shared the news with her. surely there would have been a better way of going about it.
there were plenty of issues that concerned her more than her daughter's possible marriage. she would have rather worry over joffrey, and the north ( and still, for all she has her husband's ear, it is he who will decides in the end )
her lips twist for a moment before she stares away, fingers tightening. there was a reason she insisted on managing their children, she thinks, and she will have to have a talk with her husband once this one is finished. she can understand her daughter's displeasure, at least, enough that she does not think her worry over it foolish. had she been told to remarry had tywin died, she does not believe she'd have reacted well to it. ❝ there is naught in stone yet, cersei. ❞ she adds with a sight. ❝ did he share names with you ? ❞ how much had he spoken already ?
expectations she was well aware of. it does not seem fair to her, how for one with such a high station and title, she has little to no control over her life, only a few aspects of them are truly her own. the dotting of her mares by the stables is entirely her own, and the girl's sharp mind is both an inheritance of her grandparents but nurtured by herself. a woman's weapons in life have to come from a sharp mind and an even quicker wit. but it leaves the heart the one topic that she has no control over.
"but not all." and the princess nods, no point in hiding what they all knew by then. "mother has been. . .educational about what is expected of me in a marriage." and she was not blind. myrcella knew well that she had been blessed when it came to robert baratheon as a father, as he had never raise a hand upon her or even his voice.
but her mother did not carry the same luck, and neither did joffrey in all of his whims. "perhaps mother should've been a septa for she installs such fear of a marriage like they do." emerald eyes look over, a smile lingering despite the heavy subject being spoken. "it would be nice. . .for love to grow. but I know that I should not count my stars."
❝ no, not all. ❞ she concedes. there were too many matches that were sound on paper and had ended with nothing but misery. she thinks, for a brief moment, of the queen she had waited on in her youth, or in her own daughter. still, she cannot imagine such a fate and myrcella together. she may have been careless on other people's fates, but not her granddaughter. coldness, distance ? that could be expected and endured. but she cared little what alliance it could bring if it brought her pain.
❝ your mother, a septa ? perish the thought. ❞ the laugh that leaves her lips is less lady-like than what she would usually allow herself, but her granddaughter's words take her by surprise, and she is more relaxed than if she were with anyone but family. her only daughter had made her own septa's life difficult as it was while she was young, and so the image myrcella paints is enough that amusement remains in her expression.
joanna wonders what cersei had shared with her to have her so worried. she probably ought not to ask - how her daughter raised her children was no business of hers, if cersei did not wish to share it with her, but she knows she will ask her nonetheless. ❝ even if it is not love, understandings can be reached. most men will be content as long as duties are fullfilled. but who could not love you, dear girl ? ❞ myrcella is lovelier than any girl she's met, and she does not think it is her bias as her grandmother speaking. anyone should consider themselves the luckiest to have her as wife. ❝ and if anything is wrong, you shall tell me. ❞
and all his smiles belong to her and her a l o n e.

@dcviline said : ❝ there is no redemption. can’t you see? it is too late. ❞ (jaime) / baldur's gate 3 starters (part 1)
she wonders, sometimes, how unlike herself her son is. how she had bore him. she can see herself in his face, but the ideas he speaks of are foreign to her. redemption, joanna repeats in her mind, almost confused by the word. it is a concept she has never thought of and an idea she has not pursued ( has not felt the need to purse ). when the news had come of king aerys ii dead by her own son's hand, she had felt nothing but a glowing pride. had she not dreamt of doing such a deed for years ? she can feel it no longer, as concern growing at his words instead. ❝ redemption ? ❞ she asks. it takes her a moment too long to think of what could bring such thoughts to his mind, but it is not hard to guess with the events that had transpired recently and the war coming to an end. ❝ you have done nothing you need to seek redemption for, jaime. and if anyone disagrees, they are the ones in the wrong. ❞
hm. what if i go iconless in this blog until i actually sit down and actually make them.

I need autonomy more than I need god / X (2022)
@certainpride asked: "No one is very happy. Which means it’s a good compromise."
she hates that word. the implications of it all. that truly in the end, nevermind how much power you can acquire, titles and royalties come at the expense of one's happiness. myrcella should know it better than most: a princess born, she became aware that her role in the world was nothing else than a chess piece. it wasn't until arianne had taught her and took her under her wing that she realized that she had some power and how she should use it.
the princess feels overwhelmingly ashamed of her emotional display, compared to the other women in her family, she feels the odd one out ( not because she cries, cella never cries before other people, she learned that well ). "happiness shouldn't be a compromise. it breeds bitterness and blackens the heart." a short pause, as she places her hands above her lap, posture ever so straight, as emerald eyes look before the other. "I do not want my heart to suffer that end."
❝ there are expectations set in place due to your station, sweetling. ❞ her voice is firm but gentle. where her gentlness was an act put upon for the rest of the court, there is no falseness in her when she looks at her granddaughter. she can not imagine speaking to myrcella in any other manner, but she will not give her false expectations either. she might not be the best person to say these things ― her own marriage had been fortunate as far as feelings were concerned, but her words remain true, and myrcella holds a higher station she ever had. there were expectations that came from being a princess of westeros.
❝ it does not mean happiness may not come later, princess. ❞ she adds after a moment. she will not handle her empty promises, but neither is her future bound to unhappiness no matter what. nor would they put her in a situation that seemed dangerous for her, she thinks. she is too important both in station and as family for such a thing. ❝ a match made can turn into a happy one, in time, for example. ❞ joanna adds, ❝ has anyone said anything to make you fear for your heart ? ❞
@fivekngs said : [from alicent, dance verse] in such troubled times, it is hard to know friend from foe. / asoiaf: sword of storms starters
❝ caution is required at such times. ❞ joanna agrees. it is an honor to be addressed by the queen, and she does not intend to leave a bad impression if she can help it. ❝ house lannister remains loyal to the crown, however, i assure you, your grace. ❞ honeyed words, but meant, for once. she does not say it more explicitly, cannot, perpetually cautious of who may be listening, but she hopes she is being clear enough. her uncle had not revealed all of the situation at court, but he had told her enough, had told her of who her family had laid their loyalties with.
the princess of dorne would have genuinely been an immense source of inspiration for joanna. they were eight years apart ( as the smallest number they could have been apart ), so joanna would have seen her as someone to follow when in need of example, especially just arriving to court. especially with the pressure of being the image of the perfect lady. not just that, but the princess was a woman who held power in her own name ― something joanna knew would never be an option for her, but she is someone who craves power nonetheless. as a girl, the princess would have been someone she would have looked up to a lot.
@fivekngs said : [from robert, a bit post-rebellion] harsh justice is still justice. / asoiaf: sword of storms starters
❝ you must forgive a woman's sensibilities, your grace. ❞ she has few of those, in truth, but only she and tywin know of that. there remains an image to maintain with anyone who is not them. still ― had that been what aerys had thought when he had given his orders ? that it was harsh but justified ? it is not the now-king's actions that will not leave her mind, though, but what they had done to ensure their loyalty was not questioned. it is difficult to stomach elia's death. the daughter of her oldest friend... her death haunts her more than she would like to admit to herself. she cannot admit such a thing, to anyone but lest of all to the king. ❝ surely the remaining houses will have no further to say now the war is over. ❞ she cannot imagine they will do anything but kneel to robert baratheon, now that he has been crowned king, but it is the first time in hundred of years anyone but a targaryen would rule them.
i do feel the need to clarify joanna is not particularly a good person. she's just very very good at hiding it. she's graceful, she has a smile in her face most times, she's polite, she has a compliment at the ready. but internally she can be callous and believes her family to be above others. she's proud and ambitious and it can manifest in not good ways, as she will be ready to commit terrible acts in name of those traits. she mainly cares for her family and counted others, such as the princess of dorne and her children. the people she truly considers friend and where she's not simply pretending are few.
@lionrule said : ❝ i’m not going back to sleep. my head is all a tumult. ❞ / asoiaf: sword of storms starters
the hour is early, far too early for her daughter to already be up. she mourns the end of her tranquility for a moment before she glances back at cersei. she may be no longer sleeping either, but such has been her routine for years now, a leftover from her years as lady - in - waiting that had carried over and she had never managed to shake. ❝ and deal with the court unrested ? ❞ her voice remains mild, hands wrapped around her own cup of tea. her daughter may have genuine concerns, but she reserves her judgment until the moment she hears them and not a moment before. tywin had finally dealt with the trouble of the stark boy king, distasteful as the entire matter had been. they had to entertain the tyrells for the help given, but that was a necessary price to pay. ❝ what worries you so, sweetling ? ❞
Lannister Week - Joanna Lannister
Her eyes were green, her hair spun gold.
joanna grew on feastfires. born of jason lannister and marla prester, her mother was jason's second wife and joanna the first born child from that marriage. always more prideful than his older brother, jason and tytos had spent years in disagreement over house lannister's deteriorating status, and arguments between them were a frequent thing. jason was impulsive and volatile, burned bright and fast. tytos, on the other hand, was considered a weak lord ― a kind man, but one who was easy to take advantage of and who wanted only for his people to love him, but inspired no respect. furious at the situation and his brother ignoring his advices, jason finally left casterly rock when he married the second time, and joanna would be born in feasfires, her mother's house seat. house prester was one of the principal westerland houses, but feasfires was far calmer than the rock. still, what it lacked in grandeur it made up in the family's behavior towards the lannisters. there jason would find the respect he would not at his own home, and so he would stay there permanently.
joanna may have been the first born of jason's second marriage, but she had multiple siblings, from an older bastard sister that she rarely saw, an older half-brother, to several younger brothers and sisters. she had also several older and younger cousins, several uncles and aunts, and so joanna grew surrounded by family and by the sea, that always seemed merely a few steps away.
her lannister cousins, however, she saw less often, but she met them nonetheless. jason may have taken up residence at feastfires, but he returned often to the rock, and since she was a child joanna would frequently accompany him, until the moment she would leave for court. she loved those visits, for casterly rock was impressive in comparison to her own home. however, she was quick to realize why her father had abandoned the rock, which had at first seemed incomprehensible for joanna. the nobles laughed and mocked openly uncle tytos, and joanna was quick to put the pieces together. she could not imagine not only seeing the mockery from time to time, but to have to grow with it and endure it each day. and so, she took the visits for what they were, but once she grew, she was thankful to her father for raising her and her siblings far away from the rock if that would have been the day to day life they would have witnessed.
